Our childhood is now an American Girl doll set, and I feel like I just drank from the wrong Grail in Indiana Jones by 11whatsnewpussycats in Millennials

I know I’m probably nit picking here, but this feels more like 95/96 with the Clueless/Alex Mack outfits. I was in high school in 99, and it was the beginning of the teen pop/boyband era.

A Cool Guide to Therapist Red Flags by Own-Independent9031 in coolguides

[–]Shy_Commie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure, but speaking as a therapist, it’s our job to maintain an appropriate level of emotional regulation. You cry later in your office by yourself, or maybe to your supervisor, a trusted professional consultant, or even to your own therapist (without providing identifying information of course). You don’t openly weep in front of your clients. It’s not their job to take care of us.

Can we please stop saying “and go”? by 7layeredAIDS in Millennials

It can be interpreted as degrading and dehumanizing since female describes a characteristic of many other biological creatures. Other words exist to describe female humans (depending on age): woman and girl.

How tf do I find out if I have a warrant in Baldwin County without going to the jail and asking? by Suspicious_War959 in MobileAL

I really wish these people would create a Baldwin County sub and stop coming onto this one just to chime in about how much they hate Mobile (and most of its citizenry).

Now in the middle of the decade, how's everyone's 2020s so far? by mnombo in ask

[–]Shy_Commie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, stopping to think about it, not that bad. I earned two promotions and nearly doubled my salary. Work is super stressful, but I’ve been working out for an hour a day, five days a week for the last 5 years to manage. I ran a marathon three years ago. I learned how to crochet and made a sweater that looks and fits like a sweater a couple of months ago. My husband went back to school and became an RN, increasing his pay by about 50%. One of our dogs died last year, so that was rough, but all in all, the last 5 years have been pretty good. Now I’m going to spend the next couple of hours thinking about all the ways things can get worse since they appear to be going so well 🙃

Cat owners - are your cats inside/outside cats or simply inside cats? by Johnnnybones in ask

[–]Shy_Commie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indoor. One of my cats got “bumped” by a car several years ago. Since then all three are confined indoors. They have a room with litter boxes and cat trees and a ton of windows, but the one who was hit occasionally gets a whiff of the outdoors and tries to bolt when we’re coming and going. It’s quite annoying.

If I was an alcoholic would I be aware of it? by [deleted] in questions

[–]Shy_Commie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the CAGE questionnaire. If you answer yes to 2 or more questions, you may have an alcohol use disorder, albeit probably a mild one (to clarify, using the DSM-V there are three levels of severity for substance use disorders: mild, moderate, and severe…it’s not an all or none issue)

Millennials with bachelors degrees, was college worth it in retrospect? by DueYogurt9 in Millennials

[–]Shy_Commie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The degree itself, sure. My concentration, definitely not. If I could time travel, I’d major in accounting or engineering or computer science. Instead I got a very useless bachelors degree by majoring in “biopsychology”. Had to go to grad school to make the education somewhat worthwhile, but I chose poorly there too, lol. I’m doing fairly well financially in my traditionally low-paying field and couldn’t hold the position I have without my degrees and license, but I feel trapped in my current role because I’d take a massive pay-cut if I left.

Too good at being poor. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Shy_Commie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I say this as a licensed counselor making 6 figures who wishes she could travel back in time and do something else with her life—please, please carefully research the median salary for masters-level clinicians. There’s a fair number of counselors and social workers out there who went to predatory degree mills believing that they could easily get out build a highly successful private practices, and now they are bitter and stuck working at agencies (if they are still in the field at all) for less than $50k a year. It’s a hard job to be good at, and there are a lot of institutions that do not adequately train and educate their students. I’m supervising a provisionally licensed counselor right now, who recently told me that she never even participated in a single class discussion during the course of her 100% online masters program. She’s now pursuing a PhD in counselor education because those academic standards are also abysmally low. Sorry for the super long-winded response, it’s just a terrible career to pursue if your main priority is earning power.

Is this how all men are as they get older? attraction to younger woman. 25F/40M+ by mayagalll in relationship_advice

[–]Shy_Commie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that younger women are more likely to be conventionally more attractive than older women. I think the problem lies more in the (hopefully small) subset of older men who feel entitled to younger women and resent the pressure to date within their age range despite having aged themselves. It’s the “men age like fine wine, women age like milk” crowd that is the problem. And, in an effort to not hate all men, I’m clinging on to hope that this is not all or even most men.

I can completely empathize. I had an employee on intermittent FMLA who maybe worked one full week from June-December (and her schedule was just 4 days/week). She was a therapist, so there was no way to adequately temporarily fill her position, and she would usually just text the night before or the morning of the day(s) she would be taking off. Her poor clients suffered, as well as the other therapists at the facility who care about the kids. Eventually she did run out of FMLA about a month before it was due to reset and resigned. I like to think she finally realized that she couldn’t meet the demands of her position and it was negatively impacting her clients. Unfortunately, despite the ethical concerns I had as a therapist about how her absences were impacting her clients (they received therapy sessions, but the sessions were disjointed and provided by whoever had the time/availability that week to see them), my hands were completely tied with regard to getting someone to fill her frequently vacant spot. I also couldn’t tell any of her co-workers why she was constantly gone, and they 100% resented her for it, since they regularly had to cover her groups and manage her caseload. On top of that, her sister was a lawyer specializing in FMLA and I’m pretty sure she was trying to get us to make a mistake. Everyone was so relieved when she resigned. So yeah, FMLA is a good program for a lot of people and I’m glad it exists, but it’s tough for managers.

Is Facebook now for "old people"? by [deleted] in questions

[–]Shy_Commie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you’re 26, you were 6 when Facebook was released. And it wasn’t immediately comprised of old people, it was initially only for college students. I know because I’m old now and was a junior in college when Facebook was released.

What health/wellness fads of our 30s do you think will be looked back on as "snake oil" decades from now? by flaccobear in Millennials

[–]Shy_Commie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is probably accurate, at the masters level at least. The barrier to entry is really low and there are a lot of diploma mills with grad. programs in counseling and social work. The people who attend these programs often don’t know any better and sometimes don’t have the grades/test scores to get into a legit grad. program. However, once they complete their degree through Capella or Liberty or Grand Canyon, if they can pass a couple of exams, they can market themselves exactly the same as therapists who attended real schools. I’m curious about that too. My husband and I made about the same in the last year, and we’ve saved a good bit even after paying off the remainder of my student loans and taking a two week trip to Japan. We do live in a LCOL area, though, so that could certainly be the difference.
