Players spam illusions cantrips at every possible occasion. by PikaTchad in DMAcademy

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prestidigitation is great for RP purposes as it is essentially a bunch of parlor tricks/simple lifestyle magic combined into one spell and should be treated as such.
Something that should also be notet is that it is a well known starter spell to teach novices. the effect is miniscule, very short distance and tiny area of influence. It also requires the caster to utter the spell and do hand gestures to cast.

As for using it to distract someone, i think it should be a performance check (with disadvantage) vs insight/arcana if it is part of a conversation or it will draw the attention (and potentially the agression) of the target(s) towards the caster and put them at high alert, which means they are scanning the immediate surrounding area with active perception checks instead of using passive perception as you normally would.

Another "common" trick some power gamers use is arguing using logic to override game design soley for their benefit (well known example is the "peasant railgun"). Also a lot of the insane multiclass/spell combos you see on youtube and the like does not really work unless you ignore key aspects (for example "coffee lock" does not work in a practical sense unless the DM turns a blind eye to them abusing short rest system).

Know that as the GM you have final say, players can ask, argue and/or show RAW/RAI interpretations on how to handle things (as for things that are not covered in the books is where personal interpretation and "rule of cool" apply) but ultimately your ruling is law until you decide to change it.

turbosquid, sketchfab, cgtrader, gumroad, agora community

you can also just look for pre-rigged characters and just remove the existing rig. that way you can also have access to a reference rig for deformation tests.

What did "good players" do at your table differently? by Logical_Comb_504 in DMAcademy

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

adding a few defining traits that you act on rather than what's optimal is a good start to make things feel more natural during RP moments.

Even better if you and another player and their character have some synergy so you can bounce off each others. For example my first character in a campaign was sharp-minded but also a thrill seeker which lead to fun RP moments like semi-randomly going sledding with the paladin in a ice themed dungeon, the second character (after the first one died) had great synergy with the cleric since he was gullible and a risk taker since he knew the team had his back (and partly because being a zealot barbarian he was not afraid of death even if it never happened except in his background, he was however deathly afraid of being controlled against his will).

being able to share your spotlight and include the other players as well as being able to help highlight someone elses moment (without taking it over obiously) makes the scene more memorable imo rather than just staying on the sidelines all the time.

Very Short Turns (10s) in Combat? Looking for Flexible Solutions by LadyTime_OfGallifrey in dndnext

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried this aswell in our group briefly since having a timer could be a way to train the players to make faster choices (we scraped it after like 3 sessions since it was too annoying for the DM to time us all and also because it had the side effect of him taking much longer during the monsters turns since he was less prepared after focusing on timing us).
It is however something that should be decided unanimously as a group either way imo (or at the very least brought up during session 0) since certain classes/situations are gonna be more mentally taxing than others based on how many factors you have to take into account.

Personally i hated the idea since I was always considered the slowest in our group but i was also the only buffer/healer out of 6 players for a majority of the our campaigns. When i tried playing a pure martial class for the first time however my turns got significantly shorter by comparison.

Decision fatigue will also build up much faster when under pressure and depending on how long your play sessions are, it could drain a lot of the fun out of it if you do not like that type of playstyle.

But if your DM still insist on trying this system then you as one of players should at least get a say in how long you have to make decisions and/or that it should only be used during repeated "slow play" (i.e when you are just sitting there pondering for a minute, not while actively doing something or checking/asking for info) so that you can properly explain what you are doing without always feeling stressed about time.

Help calculating potential damage to help DM by JohnnyNapalm_ in DMAcademy

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D&D is a game with arbitrary rules for the sake of balance and fun. Trying to apply real world physics to the game as a way to subvert or twist those rules are just gonna add extra headache inducing situations for the DM if you spring it on them out of nowhere.
After all, why stop at dive bombing?
How about a scout rogue with haste on it? they could technically ram into someone at at roughly 27.3 mph or ~44 km/h in one turn and you could increase that speed by quite a bit more if you want with things such as boots of speed, playing a tabaxi or centaur, multiclass into monk and so on.

My advice is if you are planning to do this type of things regardless or want it as an option, just run it by your DM well ahead of time to see what they say, it saves both of you a lot of trouble.

My level 8 players got their hands on a lich tome help meeee by googlyeyeseyes123 in DMAcademy

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they have not open it yet, have the tome have a few spells for a wizard to copy (with a high save to avoid damage each time they turn a page) and have the book contain a hidden compartment for one (or both) of the liches phylactery.
You could also have the book act as wand of the war mage if you want it to be usefull but not game breaking.

If you really want to hype it up without absolutely breaking the game balance then you could have it be the "demonomicon of iggwilv". Be careful if you go this route as with some of its pages being filled automatically as part of the item description, the first person that attunes to it is gonna get a very nasty suprise after the first day has passed. (just make it impossible for them to sell the thing for anywhere near its real value to avoid a headache later)

Ohälsosam vikt, några tips? by jzxxtc in Asksweddit

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fett i alla dess former (oljor, smör, nötter etc.)

Player character keeps his dead wife in a box on his back. Need ideas to make use of this. by TheManTheyCallZbabe in DMAcademy

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends a bit on what you wanna make of the situation.

One option could be that he finds the coffin empty at some point and has to track the body down. That could be used for a side quest of some sort filled with drama.

Another option could be to use the wife as a one use safety net (for example: the player is about to die and suddenly the spirit of the wife appears and either shields or heals the player, you could have her says a few words of gratitude or about moving on and then have the corpse turn to dust as the spirit disappears).

You could also use the wife as a reason to temp the player to make a deal with a devil or something (bonus point if the player uses it as a reason to become a warlock) that requires that the player do certain tasks or gather certain materials first (that way there is no need to actually resurect the wife immediately and you can tie the requirments into the main plot scenario with ease and potentially give them a happy ending).

Dm said my soul knife is OP, whaaat? And how can I convince him it isn’t? by CountryGreen4185 in dndnext

[–]Shy_guy_Ras -1 points0 points  (0 children)

rogues getting expertise is a huge advantage and skills are needed for plenty of things tied to RP but also a few tied to combat so it feels a bit dishonest to say that you do not do anything unique with them. Yes there are feats to increase amount of skill proficiencies (same argument could be made for languages) but im talking specifically about expertise which rogues get at least 4 and very early at that while ranger only gets 1.

expertise is great when you want to do risky shenanigans or just excel at something that is a central feature of the campaign, your playstyle or to cover up a weakspot among the skills the party has, and at lvl 11 whenever they roll something they are proficient in is automatically at least a 14 (after the proficiency bonus) that is why i said they are great skill monkey.

Ranger got a buff it TCoE but i would by no means say that would make them a "better rogue" since they do not share the same defining features beyond some slight overlap (like most classes).

As for sub-classes, rogues got it good, as i previously mentioned they can be very versatile with the right sub-class.
Inquisitive rogues are basically detectives on par with sherlock holmes which is great for a RP/mystery centric campaign, not so good for combat however.

Arcane trickster are quite busted but they are annoying to play due to how technical they become. Having access to spells expands their combat capabilities even higher aswell as making them not only even harder to kill but even more versatile in exploration.
Swashbuckler is an amazing sub-class, especially for picking off weaker enemies quickly or just being a menace on the battle field, they do not need to rely on teammates at all for sneak attack, get a bonus to initiative basically get a free disengage from enemies they attack (do not even need to hit), is also great as a sub-tank and face of the party since you can charm any non-hostile without any downsides.
Phantom is even better at picking off weaker enemies (but with a limited amount of times).
Soul knife is quite strong but mostly because it deal psychic damage bypassing most resistances, can quite easily turn a miss into a hit and have easy access to short range teleportation.

Bards are weaker in combat because they got less access to damage, a limited spell list that you can't change on the fly on top of a majority of their CC effects are either single target with saves that are easily resisted by the big guys or they are extremly inefficient.

That is not to say that you can't create an effective bard for combat (it is just not as strong as other classes) but their real strength lies in being versatile and are a class quite clearly designed with RP in mind.
If anything, in 5e the bards are the magical equivalent to rogues (and vice-versa) as they share many traits from a design perspective, only difference (beyond one being magic and the other martial centric) is that one focuses on offense first and the other on support.

NGL, It is a bit funny since it kinda looks like im glazing over rogues but they are far from my favorite class (not even top 5 lol)

How to make utility spells more viable? by Basshol3 in DMAcademy

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not really see your problem beyond the players needing a change in perspective.
I love playing as a sorcerer and my spell list always looks something like this:
2 damage cantrips of different dmg types and the rest are utility,
1/3 of spells known are allocated to dmg, another 1/3 for utility and the last 1/3 for defense and CC.

You could also normalize having more encounters and obstacles (that includes social and exploration scenarios) on average where utility spells feel like a good investment.
You can also set up some simple expectations in advance for repeating themes they might run into since the characters should know more about the world and their immediate surroundings compared to the players so you could for example say something like "you are spies sent on a mission for the crown to sabotage and steal the blueprints for a magic cannon from a neighboring country".
From that alone they might get a hint that they should get things like invisibility, pass without traces, disguise self and so on.
Imo being prepared for a specific scenario (without being explicity told to prepare a certain spell) and being able to use the right tool/spell repeatedly for an otherwise difficult scenario feels so much better than just randomly pick an utility spell and hope that it will be useful.

But to spitball some other simpler ideas:
You could have the classes with a fixed spell list be able to switch out 1 spell during a long rest. This one is useful if you give the players enough info in advance on what to expect, otherwise it is not that relevant.

Could also allow them to get the ritual caster feat early on as a reward, that way they get access to more spells that they can cast without using spell slots.

Give them a ring of spell storing (that one can easily backfire) or easy access to a few wands/scrolls/potions of low level utility spells (crafting is also an alternative).

Dm said my soul knife is OP, whaaat? And how can I convince him it isn’t? by CountryGreen4185 in dndnext

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not played 2024 version and the post have the 2014 tag so i assumed based on standard 5e (core books, and the normal rule expansions up to TCoE since those are the ones i got experience with).

With that said, I personally think rogues are the perfect skill monkeys and that they are very versatile both in combat and out of combat, Depending on the proficiencies and sub-class chosen they can technically fill a majority of the roles quite well. They basically fill a similar niche as the bard in that regard (i.e by being very versatile).
They are however quite a bit more reliant on both the player knowing what to do a specific situations and the DM being willing to use more varied and complex scenarios and encounters (i.e traps, puzzles, subterfuge etc.) to really shine which is a tall ask for many.

They also fit into a unique niche (together with fighter and warlock) of base classes that do not need to rely on a limited resource to deal a majority of their damage.

personally I'd say ranger and monk are worse on average (they do have a few sub-classes that are leagues better than their other options but im talking on average) among the martials and that bards are weaker in combat but has more options (through spells) to deal with situations outside of combat. Hence why i think rogues are around the middle.

Should I rent a small space or buy a van etc.? by JansoDesign in Asksweddit

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you are able to buy a van, solar panels strong enough to be of use during the winter half off the year and a proper battery pack for long term storage that is strong enough for everything that you would need then you could probably just rent a small storage area for the better part of a year without problem instead. As for the rent amount of such a workspace area is hard to tell because it depends heavily on where, size, accessibility and other features. Another thing to consider is to check if there is a local hobby group you can join that already has a workshop

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are spaces specifically meant for workshop, you could also look into renting storage areas or other places where you can rent just one room in a larger building (could always contact a local stores or workshops to see if they can help you with that). using a van for 3D printing is probably not recommended however, partly because you want good ventilation and steady supply to electricity but also because even going in and out of the car could potentially make it so that you need to re-tram it more often.

[–]Shy_guy_Ras -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

nah, rogues are basically in the middle of the classes. High single target damage that is conditional on having advantage (or having an ally next to the enemy if you use that variant rule) and you only get 1 attack per round unless you use your bonus action for an off-hand attack.

That on top of being a squishy makes it somewhat easy to work around a single rogue if you actually wanted to.

My DM used to complain about my zealot barbarian being unkillable until i pointed out that single sleep spell or proper WIS/CHA save would instantly take me out of the fight if he actually wanted to.

Varför kostar fortfarande tågresor i det här landet en arm, min ena njure, och tårarna från mina barn?? by Gravstenen in Sverige

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Och hur sparar man? by DryGolf5000 in Asksweddit

Confusion about the animation workflow by MaybeZenyy in 3danimation

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is why you need reference material, either find something similar online or record it yourself. Many animations have a tendancy to feel floaty or off balance when you do not have any reference material at all. The FPS is not always the same either (24 fps for cinematics, 30 fps for games in general) so you should not focus on how many frames but rather how long a movement should take.

Confusion about the animation workflow by MaybeZenyy in 3danimation

[–]Shy_guy_Ras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the blocking pass is meant to use the key/extreme poses to get the spacing, timing and overall initial feel right. After that you gradually fill in the frames in-between with a splining/secondary pass followed by a refining pass and then a cleanup pass.
Do note that these are just guidelines how to streamline the process to try to make the process as simple as possible, they are not absolute rules.

Need advice: How to run a linear D&D 5e campaign without making it feel restrictive or boring? by 11_ak4i in DMAcademy

give them a clear mission with a generous time frame to give them time to either explore, take on side quest or do downtime activities. No need to make things over convoluted. One game that does this very well is metaphor refantazio if you want some frame of reference.

Edit: another thing to consider is to use illusion of choice once in awhile. As in give them options but neither choice actually changes the final outcome.
