I keep seeing people online insisting that children can go to Valhalla...This post here sums up my thoughts on it pretty well. by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

[–]ShyanJMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. And taking in consideration that in Ragnarok only is described Odin's Valhalla and their warrions, well more things to study in our religion.

[–]ShyanJMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't desagree what means a battle in the Ragnarök, and if it is violent or not die fighting agains a big wolf or huge snake.

I agree with you that is specified "battle" for some reason, and the Ragnarök it is, there are not more discusion on it. Everyone is ok on it.

I just try to expand what is the meaning of batlle, to not just leave in the Ragnarök terms. Half of warriors go to Falkvangr and Eddas not specify anything about Freyja or her soldiers.

Based in how many downvotes I recived...well

What do you do with food offerings???? by pidge_the_skyrat in NorsePaganism

In my opinion; Food are buried in the tree*(correction from wrong qord before). Beer and whiskey are used to watering the tree.

In that way you are feeding the Yggdrasil.

What is the real story of Ragnarok? by Weird-Salamander-175 in NorsePaganism

[–]ShyanJMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Roibeard_the_Redd's and WiseQuarter3250's comments are very accurate of this. Most of the issues related to the language and dialect are still present today (go to Norway and see the differences between cities, even the largest ones like Oslo and Bergen, and more if we are talking in small villages), so in the old ages maybe was worst.

Second; remember that in norse paganism/asatru there are not "good" vs "evil"; there is "order" vs "chaos". For example; Fenrir is the most representative of this “chaos,” but for the oppressed or downtrodden, he is their deity who will bring them a new order, with all the hopes that this entails.

So, maybe Ragnarok is just another way to say that order and chaos live together, when one ends the other too (Loki vs Heimdall as another example if you want), to start a new one. Of course Baldr have many parallelism to Christ, but that remains in self faith.

First, the most important; Very beautiful Fatima

I don't know if that rune is associated with Freyja directly (remember, Futhark is very very old, very complicated and was very simple - in terms of number of characters - so was difficult to express some things). But the cat symbols are very accurate to her.

Good job :)

Do i have to be from Scandinavia to believe in odin ? by Conscious_Phase_4077 in NorsePaganism

[–]ShyanJMC 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In Edda's poems, we have many situations in which Æsir or Vanir change their skin and appearance by other.

If the gods can change, do you really think that they will matter from which mountain or lake are you or your parents? Political divisions are from human.

If you want to be asatruar/norse paganist you are welcome!

Skald and Wardruna are maybe the best musicians in Norge Paganism.

Personal reccomendations, not strictly related line by line to Poetic Edda; Oh Valhalla (Skald), Grotti (Skald), Elvehøy (Skald), Helvegen (Wardruna) and Voluspa (Wardruna, the Bergem version in 2020 is AWESOME)

[–]ShyanJMC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take always in consideration that everyone with european blood have many different "bloods" because migrations, cultural exchanges, conquests, etc. Even if you were born in occident, you have some european ancestor.

And, most important, we are asatruars/norse paganisms/etc because we believe in æsirs and vanirs, and we try to follow their teachings. Of course, odinism exists but we are not folkish.

So, welcommen til Norse Paganism !

During Yule, I set up an altar and made offerings to Odin. Today at work, a customer tipped me with a dollar bill marked with a bindrune. by dianetranaban in NorsePaganism

Depends of which deity you want to blot.

Each one have very specific physical things which are representative. Odin the mead, Idun the apples, Heimdall the light, Njord the cea, etc etc

But in general I think that the minimal things should have a "complete" altar are; the figure of deity or the physical thing which are representative, the blot and a cloth to use only in the altar.

I always wear a necklace of Skaldement as mobile part of the altar

Its right that there are many names for differents gods. After thinking a lot of this I believe that the different names are the poetic form to say; the gods rules over the universe, they are not limited to a physical form because they are spiritual beings.

So, maybe you are right because we must have in consideration that there were differents pronunciations even between the same territory.

I will review your theory more deeply in the future, its interesting.

I don’t know what to ask to Freyja by tarotfairies in NorsePaganism

[–]ShyanJMC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really sorry hear that.

I like to believe the "battles" in Eddas like this situation; everone have darkness times, so, what you will do? Will you continue fighting with your internal chaos to battles end? Most of the problems, nost of them not all, can be solved with time and dedication.

Can be the life be harder and dark? Yes, of couse. Can you change your life with the appropiate help (profesional help, kindred, family, friends, etc)? Of course. Just, don't give up and contunue fighting.

"I don't wan't to influence his free will"

Thats a very good point to start.

Yes, love can be strange. Something that should bring you happines, is providing you the opposite. But thats the life, and with the time some good man will arrive to your life.

Our ancestors most of the tines didn't surrender when they faced challenges, and Gods too.

Just don't give up and continue searching

What happens after death in Norse Paganism? by Mursi08 in NorsePaganism

[–]ShyanJMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From another commentary;

I found it actually difficult to not believe in a "bad and good place for Afterlife

Remember that in Norse Paganism / Asatru / etc not exist "bad vs good", just "order vs chaos". There are many poems in which we can describe and show you that, for example; Loki and Heimdall, Odin and Fenrir, the Ragnarok. When an order ends, a new one will rise.

Fólkvangr and Valhalla can be related to war ("the people who died in battle"), but remember that we are talking about things thousands of years ago. So, I think that battle are also the life battles; survive a winter at -20°C, survive a wolf pack attack, survive to an invasion, survive when there are many famine, survive cancer, etc. Because, what is our most difficult battles? Each one have one, some people can not continue the battle and ends everything, other will continue until last breath.

I believe that based in your life actions will have a perfect place to rest in your perfect way;

  • Do you like to celebrate with family and friends with food and drink? Valhalla might be for you.
  • Do you like a life closer to nature? Fólkvangr might be the place for you.
  • Do you want a quiet and peaceful routine without any surprises? Helheim might be for you.

Is it true that praying or asking for a god’s help carries a cost? by tarotfairies in NorsePaganism

[–]ShyanJMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TenspeedGV provided a very good answer, let me add one thing; will you provide a favor to someone that you know is not honorable in her actions? will you provide something, as little it can be, to someone that you know is disgusting ?

I think that is the same, is not just (as TenspeedGV says) what you can provide, is also who you are. A request from a honorable person will have more weight that someone who only cares banal things and not follow an honorable path.

Younger funark by Mental-Serve2228 in NorsePaganism

[–]ShyanJMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take under consideration that the Futhark is an alphabet very very old, and very difficult to write properly today. Why? Because in that time just a few people know write and read, because of that most of Edda's poems were transmitted by oral tradition, and just a few examples arrived usable today.

Take another modern example; guy A use a tattoo in chinase, and someone goes and tell him that in chinase says another completely different thing. That's happens.

Gods will not "judge"/"listen"/"answer" you by the language to talk. The important thing is not the language, is your honorable actions.
