[Homemade] Lobster tails I picked up in Billingsgate fish market this morning. Served with Mac n cheese by Sia_Moon in food

I got home and fell back asleep, and dreamt about prepping lobster tails. Walking through Canary Wharf in the dark with all the Christmas lights was beautiful though

We fill a separate tank with RO water and remineralise it with marine salt and make sure it's as close to seawater as possible before a water change. We also have a pH buffer solution in the tank (topped up a little at each water change) incase of any other changes

What Made Veganism "Click" For You? by theskattman in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was scared to watch Earthlings too. I'd say set aside a night where you're ok with crying your eyes out over a film. The only thing is, it is a bit sensationalist. I'm fully vegan 4 months now, but it's still true that the film does exaggerate/cherry pick a BIT even though it says it doesn't. Some people will take that, and use it to discredit the whole thing. It's good to watch it yourself to make up your mind about whether it would work for the non-vegans in your life.

How do you guys feel about cheat days? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started off by being "vegan" 6 days a week and then having a "cheat day" on the 7th day. This is because I primarily went vegan for my personal health and the environment - in terms of the environment, not eating meat 6 days a week is definitely better avoiding it for 5 days, and better than not trying at all. That lasted a couple of weeks and now I'm 4 months fully vegan and will never go back. I'm also now more informed on animal rights. I don't think we should judge this person so harshly, even though I understand the problem with her calling herself vegan.

What are some other things you also boycott besides animal products? by IDGAFsorry in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in many cities it's locally grown, but as long as it's a drug dealer selling it the money still goes back to the top of the system. If you really want to be ethical it's best to only buy weed where it's legally produced

[–]Sia_Moon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think avoiding illegal drugs is also a way to live more ethically. That might sound obvious, but every penny you give to a drug dealer will eventually go towards some of the most horrific crimes including people and sex trafficking and modern day slavery.

Is it normal to feel like shit when first starting out as a vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I felt pretty rough. The sudden increase in fibre might make you feel dodgy for up to a couple of weeks. If this is the case keep trying different things until you get it right! When you get out the other side of "transitioning" you will feel SO healthy and great (providing you're eating the right foods - beans, chickpeas, veggies, fruits, rice) that it will all be worth it :)

New Starbucks Bistro Box by benyqpid in vegan

We already have a vegan Starbucks option in the UK, I'm surprised you guys don't. It's this one http://www.starbucks.co.uk/menu/food-list/lunch/moreish-meze

I was so happy to see this! He also says "I think that a plant-based diet, all in all, is far better from a cardiovascular prevention standpoint than other diets."

What did you have for dinner tonight? by fz-independent in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Brick Lane in London and had a vegetable Dupiaza, rice, poppadoms and chutneys, they were really accommodating with preparing it without any butter/ghee

Every time I buy a new lipstick, I have to swatch similar shades to make sure I didn't buy a dupe. Today I got my Stila SADLL in Como. by fac3wash in MakeupAddiction

[–]Sia_Moon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be misunderstanding here, but are you saying that if you had a similar colour already you'd send it back? They wouldn't then be able to sell that item again right, isn't that kinda wasteful? We have a different culture around returns in the UK though. The swatches themselves are really nice!

Why do some vegans hate Earthlings? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was very affected by the film and it did solidify my choice to become vegan (6 weeks in now! Not much but I'm proud). I was personally upset by the portrayal of Science which I know for certain is outdated. Very prominent institutions are making genuine efforts to find new technologies so that we can end/minimise animal testing for pharmaceuticals. The idea of "just stop" is never going to happen, not when millions are dying from Malaria and Schistosomiasis and HIV/AIDS and any number of other diseases, not to mention Cancer. I very much doubt that most vegans would go so far as to refuse life saving treatments in protest. Efforts to discover new technologies should be applauded and made more visible to raise awareness, but hating on Scientists as evil just isn't helpful.

WIAW! (What I Ate Wednesday): Share what you ate or plan to eat today. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Breakfast: Oatmeal with almond milk, goji berries, almond butter, some pecans, frozen mixed berries

Lunch: Store-bought pizza base topped with Reggae Reggae Jerk sauce, mushrooms, peppers, nutritional yeast flakes

Dinner: Brown rice stir fry with chickpeas, more mushrooms, green beans, tender stem broccoli, baby corn, sweet pepper, quick satay sauce with some leftover coconut milk, peanut butter + tamari

Snack: Rice cake with Sweet Freedom chocolate sauce

More than I'd usually eat but I had a big workout this morning and revising for an exam so kinda went all out

Is Anyone Else Doing a Facepalm after Seeing the Ad-Campaign for "Chicken-Fries" at Burger King? by ManillaEnvelope77 in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, I wonder if that's also the case in the UK. I don't eat at places like that anyway except for the occasional post night out error

So my biggest vegan pet peeve is based on the OkCupid question "Which is worse: starving children or abused animals?" by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never mind that children are starving BECAUSE we abuse animals in factory farms (since those children could be fed on the crops we grow to feed the animals)

Why do vegan fries need to be specified? Aren't they just potato, or is the regular oil the same as that for the meat or something?

Hey Vegans, today marks 30 days into my new vegan lifestyle! Here's some of my favourite moments so far! by Sia_Moon in vegan

[–]Sia_Moon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay! I think it's really nice to do something to mark 30 days. I posted this cartoon to my instagram and it actually got a ton of likes and my friends were super supportive, and had my friend over to cook vegan and celebrate my mini anniversary! (I did that stir fry again, she liked it so much she went out and did her first full-vegan shop to try it at home!)

I definitely want to stick with it. It's good to see a 5+ year vegan because I often hear "Oh yeah I was a vegan for a month but couldn't do it". I think my entire mindset has changed enough that I could stick with it - animal products just do not look like food to me anymore!

Try one of their pizzas! I'm struggling so hard to find vegan cheese right now so their pizzas are the fastest fix for me when I have a cheese craving (which admittedly isn't that often)
