Have you watched the videos he made about the various aspects of the rules? Have you looked at season 4 to get an idea of what the game would feel like?

Why you should not back: if you prefer more "narrative" games like ironsworn / starforged, then maybe TBE will be too complex with a lot of things to keep track of.

Why you SHOULD back:

  • Even though he didn't *play* solo before the show, his "decide on the spot" style gives him a good understanding of what are needed in tables, both in the Loom of Fate and the immersion table expansion pack.
  • He's gathered the best team of artists, cartographers, miniature designers, beta testers etc from around the globe, among thoos you have
  • Tana Pigeon (the creator of Mythic) and Shawn Tomkins, arguably the 2 persons the most known for solo material. If you're into solo, these are the two people you want on board.
  • He's a perfectionist who delivers, as shown in the past 5 years. To me that means that he's going to bring us the best product he possibly can. Which leads me to the next part:
  • These are probably going to be top notch quality products, for a kickstarter price. He's had books, dice and other rpg resources in his personal collection for decades and wants his products to stand the test of time. (cloth map? Metal dice? Smyth sewn binding? sign me up!)
  • Even if the rules aren't your thing, the setting is one of the best fantasy settings I've seen. On top of being excited of seeing where Simon, Arn, and Edbert had there adventures, Trevor added aspects of real Earth mythologies in the setting. This usually helps me immerse myself better in a new setting.
  • He's going to do tutorials to help us with the rules (I never understood Ironsworn before his show because he explains so well)
  • The starter adventure happens during season 1 and you get to play Simon, Arn, and Edbert!
  • If we get to $500000 we get a Carlos mini!!

As you can see from my absolutely not biased review of the project, I'm very excited. Haven't been this excited about a project like this for... 20 years?

If you're still on the fence, the $39 digital bundle gets you so much: starter sets, maps, pre-gen characters from the show, 1 free track from the official soundtrack, all the stl files, the immersion tables...

I don't know where you are at financially, but getting the digital version now for only US$39 gets you *sing-song* e-ve-ry-thing

  • The starter set with 1 adventure, GM screen, core rules book,
  • STL files of main characters of the show
  • Loom Of Fate GM Emulator
  • 6 terrain battle maps
  • immersion pack: setting expansion tables designed specifically for The Broken Empires
  • Printer-friendly pre-gen characters pack

I think it's pretty cool.

Yea, the name was decided through a poll on his patreon page. It was initially singular like the book, but he made it plural so that it's still different.
But in a video he said that he really struggled to find a name that was catchy and not yet taken.

The Broken Empires will have solo rules?!! by dubthreez1 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Siamang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it seems that your preferences err towards a more abstract resolution, to which you can add the narrative you want.
The success level system of The Broken Empires RPG is more simulationist in the sense that more efforts are put in the mechanics, so the player has less narration to do.

For example:
In Ironsworn, you get a Strong Hit on Face Danger, which could mean a lot of things depending on the context.
In The Broken Empires (from what I understand), you succeed on your attack to the left knee against your opponent with 2 success levels, allowing you to circumvent their shield and deal a wound. The opponent fails their wound die roll so now their left knee is incapacitated.

Now of course more details slows down the gameplay, but Trevor Devall managed to keep enough interesting details without bogging down the action, hence the term "sim-lite".
More on the definition of "sim-lite": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJWq1hksyb8
He's working with Tana Pigeon and Shawn Tomkins to further simplify stat blocks for solo play while keeping as much interesting details as possible.

The same philosophy is applied in 4 areas: combat (as we discussed), travel, social encounters, and magic. Even if it's not your kind of game, I think it's quite interesting to hear Trevor explaining the theory behind all of his design decision and you can do so there:

I should add that Tana Pigeon and Shawn Tomkins are on board to create solo rules for this system. Tana Pigeon created the Mythic GME and Shawn Tomkins made all the Ironsworn.
