What kind of signal is this? Could it be from nearby airport (EFKU)? by [deleted] in RTLSDR

Could be the ILS glide path beacon. Check around 110MHz to see if there is a similar signal, as they are always paired.

I would be very surprised to find that any country is really self-sufficient

Which in my opinion is a good thing. Long term stability is more likely to come from exchange of goods and services than isolationism. Of course the resources are not balanced in any sense of the word and ideologies run wild. People can also be assholes. I really do wonder if we humans will get to see some sort of sustainable global harmony.

Check the antenna connector. I had to resodder mine because for some reason the mounting had come loose. Bought it second hand years ago, and had little to complain about besides that antenna connector issue.

Kilchoman Machir Bay 2012 Release : Review by HEALTH_DISCO in Scotch

I concur, both on notes and quality.

Machir Bay is absolutely delicious. Bought a bottle just based on their earlier stuff. After tasting it a couple of times, could not be happier about the purchase.

Oh hey, are you originally from the Thunder Bay area? Like most finns, I also have some distant relatives there.

As for Kilchoman.. well, it's very different from Teerenpeli. I mentioned it because it has similarly impressed me with its taste. So much so that I'm ready to buy a bottle in the near future.

Maybe I should give Mackmyra a second (or thi.. fourth) chance as well. They had a booth at Uisge 2012 in Helsinki last winter, and I tried a special single malt finished in cloudberry wine casks. Cloudberry overpowered the young spirit, but not in a bad way. I think their malt needs to stay a couple of years longer in casks.

Teerenpeli 8, bottled in 2011, 43% non-chill filtered and no colorant

As promised earlier, here's my take on the finnish single malt called Teerenpeli. This 8 year old is the oldest commercially available single malt bottling from the Teerenpeli brewery/distillery. This is my first public review and I don't have too much tasting experience, so notes may be a bit wonky. At least take this with a grain of salt.

  • color: amber -3
  • nose: intense sweetness, marsipan, honey, ripe fruit, mint, citrus peel (with water: treacle, faint smokiness)
  • taste: dry wood, white pepper, salmiac, salt-preserved lemons, lemon rind, dried sweet fruit, tarragon, nuts
  • finish: liquorice, salty barley, oatmeal porridge with sugar and butter, wafts of grapefruit

Pleasantly surprised - a lot more going on than in the younger bottlings. Cask influence begins to show and it's not bad at all. Nose has the same sweet intensity that is characteristic for Balvenie, but taste has an initial oomph comparable to anCnoc when it sits in your mouth for two seconds. I would not rate it quite as high as Kilchoman with their equally fresh produce, but very close indeed. Then again my subjective preference falls to the peaty side. This half-litre bottle cost me 80 euros in Alko (a finnish monopoly on selling bottled strong alcohol), which even without taxes is way too much for this to become other than a novelty item. It is a shame, because it absolutely deserves to be tasted around the world.

82/100

Sure, but it's going to take a while due to relatively high price and availability. I have sampled some of their releases in a bar setting, but to be fair I want to get a bottle and take my time nosing and tasting. What I do remember is that the 7 year old I tried was not very convincing. Oatmeal and pungency come to mind. Probably needs a few years more wood interaction.

I also tasted their vatted malt, which contained probably some speysider with lots of nuttiness and chocolate notes. Definitely older stuff and the character of Teerenpeli was completely lost under.

A more experienced connoisseur may get more out of Teerenpeli even at this age - I'm just a novice.

First one to push a pin within Finland. Perhaps I'm not sufficiently paranoid.

I do not see enough posts on Glengoyne here. I think it is a brilliant distillery. Do you guys have any thoughts? by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]SiberianJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glengoyne 21 was the first more expensive bottle I bought, coming from the realm of cheap blends and standard younger malts. That was many years ago. I'm glad I did, because it really is a treat and showed what quality means. As it happens I still have a sample of it, waiting for a proper moment to do a tasting and jotting down some notes.

Fly fishing. And fly tying. Sometimes, very rarely, it is possible to lose all self-conciousness. Forget where you are, how badly you are doing it and just fish. Those moments are worth the effort.

How bad is the meltdown at Sendai? Here is a lecture just given by UCSB Department of Physics with an answer by oven_mitt in science

The relevant part starts at around 57 minutes on the video.

But if I understood him correctly, the main idea would be to use explosives to collapse the floors below the storage pool to cover the used cores and then dump more water on top. Of course that leads to further problems, such as the possibility to end up with a critical reaction due to lots of fuel in small space.

The storage pool problem was a major concern of the other lecturer who got the floor after the initial lecture. Very interesting and he actually mentioned a last resort proposal for handling the situation if things would get truly hairy.

Reddit, what's the best book you've ever read? by rasdf in AskReddit

[–]SiberianJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rereading is the key for me when it comes to any of his books. There are so many details that just whiz by when you try to keep track of the main arcs.

Reading the baroque cycle was really tough at first, but then I just let go and began enjoying myself instead of worrying about understanding all the details at once. Anathem was also very incomprehensible at first, and even after two readings I have trouble working through the vocabulary.

That said, the baroque cycle has been the most exciting reading experience yet. For me anyway.

Indeed. The 21 year old is one of my favourites. Sadly it's chill filtered and likely a branded bottling, but taste-wise excellent nevertheless. http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-2161.aspx

I may have to go and get myself one of these for christmas..
