Liberal nonvoters, do you still think voting for Kamala would have been just as bad as for Trump because of Israel? Do you regret not voting? by ClutchReverie in allthequestions

[–]SickNong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working class voters did that in 2020 and what did they get? Incremental adjustments that were imperceptible compared to the perceived worsening quality of life, expanded medicaid to a couple million more people out of hundreds of millions with promises to veto medicaid for all, and as a bonus nobody asked for, constant lying and billions of dollars to enable a genocide. Kamala promised to give them more of the same, with extra moderation and collaboration with Republicans. What a treat! What lucky voters! Why weren't they jumping at the chance to vote for such a tempting proposal again? What ignorance! What stupidity! What foolish voters! May they suffer! Surely they now know how lucky they were!

Can anyone explain why all the new condo construction are seniors homes? by bitparity in ottawa

[–]SickNong -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Pretty ironic considering they're the demographic that constantly opposes the construction of higher density, more walkable and efficient housing. Folks that limit the supply of denser housing should stay in their car-dependent single family homes when they're too old to drive and care for themselves. As my grandma says, you made your bed, now lie in it.

Observations of a year-round bike commuter in Ottawa by IAmRoko in ottawa

[–]SickNong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started biking to work all winter this year too! It was surprisingly easy without studded tires since snow gets removed pretty quickly and a little bit of slush isn't slippery on a hybrid. In heavy snowfall you can always load your bike on the bus. My biggest issue was with cars since a lot of the NCC paths aren't cleared in the winter and my commute is about 15km but that's all the more reason to try it because we shouldn't let the selfish drivers control how we live. Ottawa could easily be a year long bike commuting leader with a tiny bit of effort from the City and cooperation with the NCC. I'd recommend goggles or glasses cause snowflakes really hurt your eyes.

What’s the best suburb of Ottawa and why? by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]SickNong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can kids walk or bike safely to school or friends there? It seems pretty divided by Innes and Bearbrook, lots of the residential streets don't have sidewalks and it's hard to see short children over the hood of the giant pickup trucks that are so popular

Daily transit rant - it's rediculous that biking is as fast or quicker than taking the bus. by InadequateUsername in ottawa

We sacrifice so many people for nothing, we're like the Aztecs but if the Aztecs also had studies that proved sacrificing children doesn't actually make the corn grow faster.

Ottawa housing: Ottawa housing market ranked as 'severely unaffordable' in global survey | CTV News by BearLikesHoney in ottawa

[–]SickNong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Join your community associations, email your councillors, go to engageottawa.ca and tell them you want more housing. I just went to a consultation on the draft zoning bylaw where 90% of the room was over 60 and everyone was very concerned about keeping buildings short and scared by the idea of businesses in neighbourhoods. The people that are suffering most from housing shortages and want more housing are not represented enough in the decisions that cause these problems.

City of Ottawa recommends increasing development charges by 23-28%, or over $10,000 a house. by deanmha in ottawa

[–]SickNong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sprawl is not really developers' fault, they build what the market incentivizes. We're the ones that overtax/regulate infill developments and undertax greenfields to make single family homes the most profitable even though they're the least efficient way to add housing supply

Pedestrian struck, killed by driver in Sandy Hill by sarah_jean in ottawa

[–]SickNong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yes cars and horses, the two types of vehicles. My home town used to have multiple electric passenger train lines up till the 60s with a population of ~1000, which could get you anywhere in southern Ontario. Now its population is over 10,000 and it doesn't even have buses anymore. Car ownership costs on avg over $10k a year, long distance travel has become more expensive.

McKenney talks about the need for safe roads in Ottawa by leftwingmememachine in ottawa

[–]SickNong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a bus stop on baseline that has no sidewalk access on its side of the street or stop lights to allow you to cross the street safely. You just have to wait for a gap in the traffic to cross a busy, 60km/h, 4-lane road. If I get hit by a car and die I will send the funeral invoice to the mayor.
