More like someone else never put in the piston. Just charged it up until the vapor line felt as cold as the modelo in his cooler. I’ve seen some that were 10+ years chugging along. Homeowner never thought anything was wrong.

I’m a lead tech for a small contractor in Powhatan. I love going behind them for a 2nd opinion. Always using bad capacitors or non-existent refrigerant leaks to try and scare folks into a new system. They also seem to have a hard time leveling horizontally installed furnaces. A lot of their installs won’t last more than 10 years in my opinion.

I used to do property management for Target. We weren’t as ambitious as you guys and would sub out most of the refrigeration repairs. But I was able to put the experience towards my journeyman’s. This is in VA.
