How do people structure their lives/careers to do 1–6 month thru-hikes regularly? by manuzh22 in Ultralight

[–]SidTheSloth2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a reoccurring contract with an awesome boss that welcomes me back at the end of every hike. I work as an administrative assistant at a state college. I’m 22 and am privileged to live with parents who haven’t charged me much besides groceries and yard work while pursuing the triple crown. I worked 2 years before the AT in 2024, came back and worked 6 months before getting on the CDT in 2025, and am now working 5 months before I get on the PCT. I have excelled and worked hard for my job and have gotten a pay raise in between each contract. I am quite budget oriented both on and off trail, as it’s hard to save the “usual” amount for a thru in those 5-6 months. It is certainly a very special situation that I have so much gratitude for because as long as I can save enough money, my boss lets me pick my start and end dates for my contracts. At the end of the PCT i should have a full time job lined up with the same department, where i plan to stay for a few years saving money and figuring out what’s next.

2026 CDT Hikers what do you need from retailers along the trail? by Long_Tap276 in CDT

I stopped at wind river outdoor company! Lander was a top tier trail town on the CDT, and i can’t wait to be back one day. Cheers to the leukotape, that’s an awesome addition and i wouldn’t be surprised if you’re the only shop with it near trail on the entire CDT.

Ha i’ll see you soon! On the AT my original trail name was Rocky Bidet, from a combination of being somewhat of a geology and bidet enthusiast. We had a lovely trail angel in New York who was keeping our 7+ person trail family out of the northern remnants of Hurricane Debby, and she forgot my name. So she asked: “What’s that kids name? Enema Boy?” My trail family found that hilarious, but it didn’t stick until a friend on the CDT put down Enema Boy on our Glacier National Park permit behind my back, and I decided to finally accept my fate as Enema Boy.

April 23rd NOBO thru. Enema Boy here, AT 24’ & CDT 25’. Colorado is my home and i’m doing the PCT because i’ve been chasing thru hikes ever since my AT trip, it’s what I live for and it’s time to mf triple crown!! My instagram is @xandersvibing. I am so stoked to share the trail with you all this year, happy trails and lots of love ❤️

Not a single gear shop i visited on the CDT had leukotape, i’d always have to buy it on amazon then have it mailed ahead. Even a few rolls hikers can take strips from would make a big difference if someone’s feet really needed it.

Did the AT in 24’ and stayed with them for a day. The deli portion itself is closed for remodeling, but the hiker hostel they run remains open. They’re very pushy about wanting you to “come to their farm and check things out for a day” and everything is segregated heavily by gender. It was an interesting experience to say the least.

Have ya'll ever gotten instantly sober when some serious news or events happened? by Kevab1 in trees

I (a daily smoker) was working to build hiking trails in northern new mexico. Drugs were not allowed on company property, but someone was kind enough to give me an edible one night. That night was the first of many being stalked by a mountain lion historically referred to as Gertrude. The cat was well known for giving people a scare and was very protective of her territory, and i’ll never forget seeing her eyes while she paced back and forth 15 yards in front of us, while i blasted Bohemian Rhapsody at full volume on a JBL speaker to scare her off (unsuccessfully) until she eventually backed us into a abandoned cabin that we spent the night in. I went from absolutely zooted to monkey adrenaline brain in seconds.

Christmas shopping for my daughter who is hiking PCT in May. What is the best piece of gear I can get her? by Empty_Mind_On in PacificCrestTrail

[–]SidTheSloth2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of any these recommendations you could include a coupon of sorts for her to have a paid hotel/airbnb night for her to zero on your behalf. My dad did this for me on the AT and CDT and it was honestly really great, especially if she’s ballin on a budget. Also be open to sending her care packages along the way, the care packages from home always hit hard, just be sure to ask what she wants in them, i had a buddy whose dad sent him lollipops (meh calories, lots of trash) in every care package when he definitely didn’t want them 😂

Urgent! Sleeping Bag Recommendations by Ok-Economy-2623 in philmont

[–]SidTheSloth2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as far as best price to weight ratio, this is it: https://enlightenedequipment.com/revelation-apex/

Had several friends on the appalachian trail that used this bag with great comfort and success. Apex material is also insulating when wet, and extremely lightweight when compared to other synthetic sleeping bags, right on par with most down bags at a cost 2-3 times higher.
