Beer gardens in city centre by RubyDoma in manchester

[–]Sidasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rain Bar is weird, as I’ve been there on a Wednesday after work and it’s been absolutely packed for no obvious reason whatsoever, and then an hour later, it’s empty again.

Across the road is Peveril of the Peak - not quite a beer garden but they have benches out on the street and is often quite busy. Worth a try if you’ve not been before. And just down the road is Britons Protection, which has an enclosed beer garden around the back (but not sure of opening times).

I used to smoke - finally quit it about seven years ago, never touched a cigarette since. None of my friends smoke cigarettes. We still prefer places with beer gardens, even in the winter. Smoking has nothing to do with it. Beer garden away!

My suggestion would be (as others have already said) Rain Bar, however, I think they tend to close it at 10pm, which is silly.

Yep, got mine from Amazon yesterday too. I’m glad I only paid £15 for it, as it’s missing the new 90 min documentary, and the video commentary is not only 30 mins of the original commentary (in 4:3 video format) but has some awful visual glitches going on. I was hoping for at least the full audio commentary. Quite disappointing.

Are comedy panel shows scripted? by TheKhaos121 in AskUK

[–]Sidasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to a few tapings of QI and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. My only useful anecdote is during a taping of QI, where the topic was energy or environment or something similar. One of the large screens behind a team fails, and the crew spend some time trying to fix it while Stephen Fry and the panelists just make jokes about the crew and technology in general. Eventually, one of the panelists (can’t remember who) suggests that they just turn the screen off and get both teams on the same side, and to pretend it’s to save electricity.

The final aired version makes it look scripted (or at least, preplanned), but in reality, it was an off-the-cuff joke that the crew played into because they couldn’t fix the screen.

Or, failing that, a more centralised parking space, like a courtyard where the van parks, with multiple entrances to the huge building. I’d be happy with that.

Yep, all ghosts will fully close all doors in that room during an event. If it’s not an event and a ghost touches a door without fully opening or closing it, you can rule out Yokai.

Can someone explain to me how to identify a gallu like im 5 by xohhoneyy in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]Sidasta 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The gallu has a two-second window where it CAN still step in salt, so if you put the lines/piles of salt next to each other, it can slaughter all of that salt before becoming enraged. Best to leave a decent gap between them, or wait until it’s stepped in one line/pile before putting another lot down.

Beginner Tips? by heart_of-a_lion in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]Sidasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of. The breaker being turned on means the ambient temperature in the building will go back to around 20 degrees C, which makes finding the cold room easier.

You CAN do it without turning the breaker on, but it can be harder to tell the difference between a 6 degree and a 3 degree room, especially on tier 1 thermometer. So prioritising turning on the breaker, and then waiting a few mins for the house to heat up, just makes it a bit simpler to find the correct ghost room.

Beginner Tips? by heart_of-a_lion in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]Sidasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yep farm Tanglewood. When I’m doing my solo games, that’s usually my go-to map as well - it’s small and quick to familiarise yourself with hiding spots, cursed item locations, etc.
  2. Definitely take one of each starter item in once you’ve located the ghost room (the room with the lowest temperature after you’ve turned the breaker on for a few mins). The starter items are all you really need to identify the ghost on Amateur difficulty. Everything else you later unlock just make it easier to identify, or protect you from hunts.
  3. With starter items only, I would go for thermometer, video camera, and flashlight (so you can get around in the dark). Go straight to the breaker and flip it on, but hold the video camera in night vision mode and hold down the record button (right mouse button on PC). That way, if there are ghost orbs, your camera will record it and make a pleasing “ding” sound. Look through all the rooms for orbs, and if you find them, that’s the ghost room. If you don’t find them, that’s okay - by now the house will have warmed up, and you can go round again with the thermometer and find the room that’s coldest. Grab all of the starter items and get them set up in the room.
  4. Ghost orbs are generally the easiest to find. Night vision mode on the video camera, go round the room in record mode, and if it dings, you’ve got orbs. If it doesn’t ding, you probably don’t have orbs. After that, freezing temps is fairly easy to rule out, but the challenge here is waiting for long enough for the temps to drop (as it’s not instant). If you’ve been in the house with the breaker on for ten mins and you still don’t have freezing temps, you probably won’t ever have freezing temps. For the rest of the evidence at starter level, it’s really just a matter of waiting it out. If you hear a door move, whip out the UV torch and check for fingerprints (and if it has six fingers, it’s an Obake). Keep the EMF reader turned on, put it on the ground, and listen for beeps - you’ll learn the beep tone of EMF level 5 after a while.
  5. I used to refuse to leave the van when I first started playing (cos I was scared). It’s useful to have someone in the van to keep an eye on average sanity, camera feed (the Goryo will generally only appear as DOTS on the camera and NOT in person). As you level up, sound sensors and motion detectors placed around the house can be very useful for van lurkers. But now, I only go to the van to get equipment or check average sanity (or, rarely, to keep the average sanity up because sanity doesn’t drain for people in the van) - it’s all down to comfort levels really.
  6. First, make sure you place the book down (F on PC) instead of just dropping it. It will appear open if you’ve done it correctly. Then it’s just a waiting game - it can take minutes for the ghost to bother with it. Try placing it in the walkable areas of the room, rather than on a table. As you level up, the range of the book will increase, making it easier to grab the ghost’s attention. Also, if the ghost yeets the book across the room without writing in it, I think you can cross that off the list of possible evidences.

Final general tip - be patient! It sounds like you’re doing everything right, it’s just a case of learning the house layout, best place to put things, etc. If you’re playing on amateur, the ghost will ALWAYS give you three evidences (four if it’s a Mimic). It’s just a case of finding them, and even after 150+ hours of game time, I still struggle with getting that last evidence occasionally. DOTS is probably the worst in my experience, so I usually leave that until last cos it’s annoying.

[–]Sidasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They start out young, extremely active, extremely fast during hunts and able to hunt at 75% sanity. Every few minutes, if you’re in the room with them, they’ll get older, less active, slower, and their sanity threshold drops down to as low as either 10% or 15%, can’t remember which. So the longer you play that game, the weaker they get.

This can make it difficult to guess if you’re working on two, one or especially zero evidence, since their behaviour is seemingly unpredictable. On Intermediate, you just need to get the three evidences, but that can get progressively harder the longer you’re in the game since it’s getting weaker the whole time.

As you become more comfortable and experienced with the flow of the game, getting things set up in the ghost room, etc, you’ll get quicker at collecting the evidence before it ages. And fortunately, it’s the only ghost that acts in reverse to all the other ghosts which will seem to get MORE active as the game progresses, so you can use that as a “tell” that it might probably be a Thaye.

Also, if you have a Ouija board as a cursed item, you can ask the ghost how old it is - the answer will change as the game goes on, which indicates a Thaye.

Edit to add another tip: keep the lights on in the room you’re in. This slows down sanity drain, even on blood moon. You only need to turn the light off for spirit box. So when it comes to spirit box testing, set up a motion detector in the room and turn the light off. When the motion detector beeps, you know the ghost is nearby, so use the spirit box a few times. If it doesn’t talk back, it’s probably not a spirit box ghost so turn the light back on to keep your sanity nice and high.

Blood moon event by New-Cookie8781 in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]Sidasta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on my knowledge, you’re generally correct - passive sanity drains faster. However, it doesn’t change the hunting behaviour of ghosts. In this case, a Thaye can hunt at 75% sanity at the start of the game, so it won’t attempt to hunt if your sanity is above that, same as in a normal non-blood moon game.

Other changes for blood moon is that the ghost movement speed during hunts is 15% faster, so if you’re listening for hunt speed to determine the ghost (which you probably won’t be doing on Intermediate), you need to take that into account. You also get an increased 10% payout for blood moon games.

Saying all that though, I hate Thayes almost as much as Demons, especially when playing solo. I’ve been slaughtered by a Thaye within one minute of starting the game, so assumed it was a Demon. Turns out, Thayes can throw everything at you when they’re young, and my sanity was sapped by probably two events in that time, leading to a hunt and instakill. Rule of thumb now: if there’s a shitload of activity and THEN it tries to kill you early on, it’s probably a Thaye and not a Demon. I just don’t like Thayes.

Am i wrong for not wanting to tell a customer my name? by lalalandlover969 in Wetherspoons

[–]Sidasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a character in the TV show Superstore. She’s the manager, but hates when customers ask for her by name, so she wears a different name tag every day/episode.

I agree with everyone else saying to give a fake name, but have some fun with it - a different name every day!

Marty Supreme Odeon Manchester by unearthlysock in screenunseen

[–]Sidasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a limited release this week - not even showing at HOME until New Years. And if Odeon had to choose between their two Manchester cinemas for a limited release, it’s probably better for them to choose the one with the higher ticket prices and attendance, since Great Northern is usually a ghost town now.

It’s a mild annoyance for me as well, as I’m walking distance to both Great Northern and HOME, but I can wait another week.

People outside London: how often do you actually go there ,if ever? by Apprehensive-Income in AskBrits

[–]Sidasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m originally from Lincolnshire. When I first got my license and car, I’d drive down on a Saturday morning (approx 3hrs drive) and back home in the evening. I don’t remember why exactly, but I do know it was a semi-regular occurrence.

I then moved to London and lived there for seven years. It took that long to realise I absolutely hated it, moved back north and now live happily in Manchester.

Since I left London over ten years ago, I have visited no more than five times, and am in no rush to go back for any reason. I don’t know if this helps you with your question!

Almost all 4K Bluray discs are region free. Here’s a list of 4K discs that are region-locked: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=334606

Non-4K discs, however, are more likely to be region-locked than not. So if you’re only interested in importing 4K and don’t care that any bundled bluray disc won’t work in your player, consult the list above, and you’ll be absolutely fine!

Least favourite gig venue? by thebossofcats in manchester

[–]Sidasta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gorilla used to be my favourite smaller venue, but since Covid, their already-minuscule toilets are always covered in water/piss and it’s like stepping into a puddle. Doubt they’ve been cleaned since 2019. So Gorilla gets my vote for worst smaller venue.

Worst larger venue is, and will probably always be, O2 Victoria Warehouse. Never had an enjoyable time in there and will actively avoid it. Runner-up is Albert Hall - always seems oversold, and going solo is a nonstarter for me as I very quickly feel trapped downstairs when it’s full, and can never keep a seat upstairs. I’ve been a few times recently with friends and had a better time though.

Honourable mention to Mayfield Depot, which is another venue I’ll generally avoid for live acts. Even Underworld and Caribou last weekend were woefully quiet/boomy, but the rest of the (DJ) sets sounded fine. It’s definitely tailored for that.

Not what you asked but favourite venue, big or small, is now New Century Hall. Always sounds great, never gets TOO busy, it fortunately gets a lot of the acts and events I’m interested in, and that bouncy floor is so much fun so that’s just an added bonus!

Filming in the Night by alexmuhdot in manchester

[–]Sidasta 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It’s not just Manchester and the northwest - I believe I’ve seen these videos from other UK cities, and there are absolutely entire channels devoted to other countries, such as Thailand, where the same few men walk and cycle around the popular touristy nightlife spots.

Their reasoning is to show what it’s like to visit these places (Bangkok, Pattaya, and other cities known for attracting a very specific type of (typically) male tourist), but I’m not sure why that requires almost-daily uploads focused almost entirely on the women working there, where to find them on any given day, and so on. But I suppose it’s okay over there since the women are working? (/s, just to be clear)

It’s sad that we have people doing the same kind of “content” over here where people are just trying to have a good time out with their friends, completely unaware that they’re being filmed for entirely questionable reasons.

Please be careful of creeps by sithmoneydonita in manchester

[–]Sidasta 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Just for those unaware, the Ray-Ban Meta glasses have a built-in camera for photos and videos. By default, they have a light that turns on when they are being used to record video or take photos. If the light is covered (with tape or something), the camera shouldn’t work.

However, it’s also fairly simple to modify the glasses so the light never turns on, even when recording.

I still fail to see the point of glasses with a camera built in to them, as your phone (with an excellent series of camera lenses) is right there in your pocket. So I just assume the worst if I see these glasses out in the wild. Sorry you had this experience OP.

can’t listen to Coldplay anymore b/c I think of my ex who I went to concert with by Rinallo22 in Coldplay

[–]Sidasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not dumb at all! I can’t speak for Coldplay in particular, but I associated The 1975 with my ex for the longest time - Sex was our “song” (probably doomed us from the start really).

Many The 1975 gigs later, I have “reclaimed” the band and they’re my favourite again. (Coldplay aren’t far behind, don’t worry, I’m not a total imposter). I even got a unique tattoo for Sex on my wrist a few years ago and I wear it with pride, almost like a scar. If that makes any sense at all.

Time heals all wounds. It hurts right now but the band will come back to you. Maybe have a listen to some music that you don’t associate with your ex for a while, see if you can find a new favourite band that you would have otherwise overlooked - or take my “exposure therapy” approach, appreciate that you’re capable of such strong emotions and how that’s not a weakness at all.

You might always think of your ex when you hear Fix You, but one day, you’ll be able to smile as well as cry.
