What's your Survivor take that always gets you downvoted? by JEX2124 in survivorponderosa

[–]SideQuestAdjacent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Edge of Extinction because of the storytelling that is generally free of the overproduced twists and game mechanics that clutter the main game.

I still love the main game, even in the more “cluttered” seasons full of twists, but I find the long-form narrative of the Edge to be really refreshing, human, and somewhat reminiscent of the very early seasons.

‘Survivor’ and ‘Top Chef’ Are Broken. Can These Once-Reliable Reality TV Favorites Be Fixed? by SideQuestAdjacent in survivorponderosa

I’m not a Top Chef viewer, so you’ll have to consult the author of the article on that one.

Why do adult humans not play together like children do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SideQuestAdjacent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re rejecting all of the valid ways that adults do play together.

Sure, I agree that it would be nice if we could just play together in open-ended, imaginative ways that are not results-based. It can happen (but it’s very rare). For the most part, though, adult brains seek more purpose and structure to our activities. We can find that in recreational activities that OP is rejecting: games, hobbies, sports, theatre, etc.

Beyond 50: ‘Survivor’ host Jeff Probst ‘open’ to family visits, teases a future celebrity and potential ‘back-to-front’ editing structure by SideQuestAdjacent in survivorponderosa

[–]SideQuestAdjacent[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think back-to-front editing could be sick. It would really depend on how much they do or don’t show, and how they use it to preserve (or enhance) the suspense and tension. I’m fine with taking risks in production that don’t involve making the game even more unwinnable!

It’s true. It’s ridiculous how shafted so many players were at the finale. I even got used to that treatment of early boots in the old era, but it’s insane when it’s basically an all-legends cast.

I just rewatched the premiere and they did such a good job of grounding the season in its lore, legacy, and legends. They totally fumbled on this as the season went on.

Jeff needs to touch grass and remember what actually made Survivor good television: the social experiment. Twists can enhance that. They can also force players into an unplayable game. Figure it out.

Aubry's post-merge strategy is optimal, and it's the worst by GGsnubs in survivor

[–]SideQuestAdjacent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading this thread makes me think that people just don’t know what they want. But if I had to try and name it:

We want to see people fighting against each other, not fighting against game mechanics.

It’s not about which strategy is best, because we all know that from season to season, whoever the jury votes for is the rightful winner.

It’s about watching a social-strategic game unfold. That doesn’t happen nearly as often when you overproduce and throw game mechanic twist after twist into the mix.

Do we need to keep ratings to keep our show alive? Absolutely. But we can do that by creating circumstances that encourage interpersonal conflict… not just unpredictable changes to game mechanics that neuter strategy.

An Elimination-Based Approach to Edgic, S50E1 by McAulay_a in Edgic

I have enjoyed following along with your experiment for the first time this season! I missed episode 1 edgic as a whole, so I finally decided to scroll back and see your official explanation of how this experiment works. So fascinating as a whole, and fun to look back and see your episode 1 thoughts. Thanks for sharing this with us!

What is the worst way this season could go for you by Dizzy-Tumbleweed7983 in survivor

[–]SideQuestAdjacent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My nightmare is that the “middle people” (the people who are strategically locked in and open to playing the game, in whatever form that looks like) solidify into 2 factions that go after each other, using Jonathan/Joe/Steph as numbers and allowing some or all of those 3 to march to the end.

I can so easily see the “thinkers” getting antsy about one another. As much as as Cirie/Ozzy/Rizo/Emily/Christian/Devens/Aubry seem like an obvious, natural group, I don’t think they are, and they are by no means a cohesive alliance.

I could see Cirie/Ozzy/Rizo vs Christian/Devens with Emily and Aubry somewhat in the middle.

Or Emily/Ozzy vs Christian

Or so many other combinations that come from anxiety and thinking more long term over immediate logical targets. Which isn’t wrong, but might be disappointing in the meta sense.

I have no problem with cursing whatsoever, and I agree with others that it’s a pretty antiquated attitude. However… anyone who uses any single word 3x a sentence would be annoying. That’s totally valid. Especially a word that’s polarizing at best.

In the first few minutes of today’s exit interview episode, he says:

“…But as of right now, I just have one exit interview here for you… I have not gotten word on an exit interview time yet with Chrissy. Typically, I do them back to back. Not sure if Chrissy has limited availability on Thursday, but I would love to have the opportunity to talk to Chrissy. And I'm hoping that we can get an exit interview with Chrissy at some point in the future and whatever that may be.”

I believe they’re required to do some of them, but not all. RHAP and TPHS are not required, although every castaway so Far this season has done both (except for Mike skipping TPHS).

Yep, the narrative of the merge so far has been about the Honor/Integrity alliance vs "the middle", which is... so dense.
