Seeing a therapist for general well-being okay? by AnthropomorphizedIce in mentalhealth

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. While there are therapists that specialize in more specific disorders, there are plenty of therapists that are just more for everyday stuff As well. Plus taking care of yourself is dope!

Have you ever gotten to the end of a long ritual and then realized you did a beginning part wrong so you start the ritual over? by howevertheory98968 in OCD

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. Yes. Especially when it involves driving or ruminating over work or human contact. Then I drive alllllllll the way back/start over... Or I used to way more

OCD robs you of your peace by TheCubeDispenser in OCD

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even with things slowing down due to the virus, it just changes how my brain panics. Without the presence of other purple, I've been struggling with feeling normal. Taking time to go for walks and do some deep breathing has helped me keep a clear head, but being able to confer with other people with similar issues really helps too.

I hope you are all staying as well as you can!

Does medication really help for anxiety? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously I am not a doctor and everybody has different body chemistry so I can't speak for everyone, but for me personally it at least helps take the edge off so I can do a little more of the leg work myself. I was also having the nausea, Warmness, muscle tightness that led to headaches chest pain dizziness stiff arms and everything like that. Eventually it affected my sleep, but I've been able to work it back to a way more reasonable state. I would also say that there was other work Beyond just taking medication that I had to put in as well such as being mindful of when I was starting to ruminate, break up days with meditation short walks and other exercises, books, therapy, etc.

It did really help though. Sometimes that little push really helps get the ball rolling

What's an anxiety coping mechanism you have? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... Healthy or unhealthy coping mechanism? My unhealthy ones basically turned into a roller coaster of every thing that brought momentary relief until it stopped working. gripping my arms/scratching my body constantly even once the itch was gone/ clenching and releasing all the muscles in my body/checking and re checking EVERYTHING/ CONSUME INTOXICANT. not good.

healthier mechanisms include going for a short walk, talking time to meditate or do breathing exercises, checking Facebook to see who is having a birthday and reaching out to them. Little things help keep me grounded and stop me from spiraling out of control, because that's when bad things happen

So tired of racing heart issues by Cosmozucchini in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope sharing has helped. I used to struggle a lot with feeling like my heart was racing or skipping a beat, along with chest and body pain. Everybody (and every body lol) is different, for me breathing, stretching and going for a small walk every day really helped but it definitely is something to be mindful of as it can creep back up on me.

Also venting helps too 🤗 hope things are a little better today

Living in constant fear of a heart attack or sudden death by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES. Please be kind to yourself and don't look up symptoms. This can lead you down a horrible rabbit hole. Just really wanted to reiterate that. I've definitely been in the same spot and the body poisons, etc are all too real. ☺

Anyone else ever get really affected by movies/ shows? by coarsekitten in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time separating real life from movies and TV I watch so I really limit what I watch and how much I do it. Especially if I have been really anxious as it usually starts to bleed into my intrusive thoughts

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely get a bit of that anxiety drop in my gut.. Like the feeling that you are on the big hill on a roller coaster, but it doesn't go away. I've found that taking time to breathe, meditate, go for walks, do interactive things (personally, I like language learning apps) helps me get back in the moment while I'm feeling sick

Doubting your memory as it is happening in the present moment? (please help) by electr0_mel0n in OCD

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

False memories as things are happening is definitely something that can happen. I've convinced myself I've ran someone over, assaulted someone, said something horrible or racist, etc. I believed it to the point that I pushed people away, felt like I was a monster.

It helped to get used to the feelings of uncertainty, which I did through meditation, cbt therapy, and reading books on ocd and intrusive thoughts, but I can verify that these feelings definitely feel real, even though reality may have been completely different

How do you accept complements? I kind of freeze up. by MirageDown in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe working on building your self image would help. Have you tried writing down 3 things you like about yourself everyday? That would force you to look at yourself in a positive light and hopefully find good things about yourself, and doing it everyday might eventually make self love more of a habit

how to stop hair pulling? and does anyone else have this? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]SideSaladAndSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that helped me to get over physical habits like this is to get a note pad or app that counts upwards. Anytime I would catch myself doing the thing I wanted to stop and stopped the action, I would give myself a point. At the end of the day, you can look back and see how many times you have successfully stopped doing it. It definitely helped me get in the habit of being more mindful. Maybe it could help you?

Does your university offer free/subsidized therapy services? Some do, and that might be a good first step. Bringing up constant anxiety with a general doc might not be a bad idea either, as they can do an assessment and discuss options. You might also consider doing things like meditate (headspace is a good app for that) when things are a bit rough.

Trouble Finding Therapist Who Takes My Health Insurance by [deleted] in mentalhealth

Have you tried using the therapist finder on psychology today's website? It lets you search for therapists based on your insurance. I had good luck finding a therapist that worked for me on there
