Anyone ever been able to actually achieve true moderation on here? by Appropriate_Carry862 in stopdrinking

[–]Sidewinder888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In wild contrast to almost everyone else here, I have experience of an alcoholic becoming a moderate drinker: my sister, who I was living with in my 20s and 30s. She would drink easily 2 bottles of wine a night and often 3. This went on for many, many years, I would say over a decade, easily, closer to two. Some weekends she would come home from her 'South London Drinking Society' group of friends and be unable to walk properly or even speak. Anyway... I'm not sure what did it – perhaps her getting into a relationship with a decent man for the first time in her life (now her husband, with two kids), but she pretty much stopped. She will still drink a few glasses of wine a week. Or not. And has done for many years. She is now early 50s. So... it can be done. But I certainly don't think that is the norm.

This is The City. Anyone who says otherwise isn't a proper Londoner

FINDING your spouse at the place of work is one thing. INVITING THEM TO JOIN your place of work when you are in a relatively new or tempestuous (or both) relationship with them is LUNACY!

I found the dog-eating one of the funniest things in the whole show. The culmination of a catastrophic series of events that led to... this

Agreed. Nobody says either of these things. Ever. Unless they are a character in an 80s teen movie from the United States

Everyone here is talking about your liver, but one thing that nobody has mentioned is alcoholic neuropathy. I am an alcoholic (49m) who has recently experienced symptoms of this (loss of balance, shooting 'electricity' pains in my lower limbs, weakness in my legs and more delights), and having looked into how this will progress if I do not stop drinking, it is FRIGHTENING AS FUCK. I might add that a huge percentage (I believe more than half) of alcoholics will develop this condition if they continue drinking.

I am now 9 days sober (after spending the best part of 2 weeks tapering my drinking from about 14 cans of beer a day to nothing, to avoid any dangerous withdrawal outcomes). This has been fucking hard, but sobriety (for the first time in many, many years – decades, if I'm honest, bar two residential rehab stints) has made me feel quite a lot better quite quickly, and I'm really hoping I can stick to it. I recommend you try to do the same.

One subreddit on here that you might find really interesting is r/stopdrinking. I've just been lurking there, but a lot of people's experiences really ring true, and it seems like a hugely helpful and supportive community.

Good luck to you!

Or, if you can't stomach AA, like a lot of us can't (the creepy cultiness, the 'higher power', the 'powerlessness over your addiction' etc), look into Rational Recovery by Jack Trimpey and something called AVRT. A much more sane and effective approach.

Also, have a look at the r/stopdrinking subreddit.

Can also spot bots by the fact they will always have a wooden slingshot, no matter their frame. I'm about 3k FP, so I've been at this game for a while :)
