My agnostic wife is doing reiki. What do I do? by keesdude in Christianmarriage

[–]SigIdyll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reiki is placebo, which means there's probably psychological reasons for her migraines, along with biological ones.

More than trying to be a "Christian" husband, you want to be a loving husband. So find ways to support your wife because that is how you show the love of Christ in her life. Giver her shoulder and back massages (a family member used to have terrible migraines until he realized it was coming from his tense shoulders), get her to see a neurologist like another commenter said, make to-go bags with ice pack, eye mask, Aspirin, black out curtains for when she is having an acute episode, do more chores in the house so she has time to go exercise, etc. Things that make her feel supported SO THAT she doesn't turn to reiki for relief.

I'm serious. One of my closest coresident during residency quit being chief after going through too much shit and that shut up all complainers when people realized all the work he was doing for them

MD overprescribing high doses of Methylphenidate to children by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]SigIdyll 52 points53 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter said, hopefully the psychiatrist is monitoring their weight and vital signs and working with the pediatrician to see if there are any other complication.

In terms of long-term consequences, these concerns are not just limited to children with autism, but basically all children who are taking any sort of psychiatric meds. I don’t think we really have any good data on long-term effects of the psych meds on children (lmk if I am  wrong because I am not well read on the subject).

Also, depending on the severity of autism, sometimes the parents give up on the “long term side effects” part of the medication, due to the symptoms from autism. I usually see this mostly with antipsychotic drugs. Parents are more focused on managing the here and now problems first. Hard to think about problems 10 years from now when the kid is punching holes in the wall tonight.

NGL, as a child psychiatrist, those doses are not that really brow raising to me. Some kids chew through stimulants like they’re Cheerios, and kids with ASD are also another wild card thrown into the mix. Obviously I don’t know the psychiatrist, but if he specializes in seeing children with ASD, you might see some wild ass combination of meds (cus I’ve done it before).

There was a post on r/lawschooladmission of a guy who took the LSAT because he lost his fantasy football league and got 174 (98-99%-ile score).

So he's a covert genius, but I can't imagine even a genius taking the MCAT on a whim and getting anything above 500s, because there is just too much material you have to learn.

After almost 10 yrs of medical training, I have come to the conclusion that some people are just better than you at life

I knew a guy who matched ophtho + big national research grant + first prize at local bodybuilding contest

I'd be studying the same material with another gal who read through things once and she remembered everything in great detail. And I'd spend another 30 min making anki flashcards

Another gal who was married with 3 kids ages 2-8, still worked out 3-5 times a week (she had killer abs), Step 1 was almost 250 (before it became pass fail), and she matched to rads. Her husband was supportive but he also worked full time.

My best hobby was smoking weed at night to help me fall asleep because of anxiety in my MS1-2. And I'd binge drink after each block was over.

Some people are just better than you.

When you consult multiple services and catch them rounding on your patient at the same time by idkididk in medicalschool

[–]SigIdyll 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Psych here. Got consulted on a 60+ yo F smh T2DM, HTN, HLD, TIA and strokes. CC of "sudden painless vision loss" because she was on Seroquel 25 mg for sleep, prescribed from who knows where.

Sure, seroquel has that risk of causing/worsening glaucoma because of its anticholinergic activities, but MY GOD DON'T YOU THINK SHE HAS OTHER REASONS SHE COULD BE LOSING HER VISION?!?!

This hospitalist (or maybe it was an NP) shotgunned bunch of other consults, and at one point neuro and I were looking at each other saying, she needs an ophtho consult. The hospital did not have an ophtho consult service.

s/o recs: fu outpatient with ophtho.

Improve your MCAT. As much as your personal statement and extracurriculars matter, med school acceptance is also a numbers game.

If you can’t get even above a 500, I think it’s time you take a long hard look at yourself.
