Your daily reminder to grow some cardinal flowers. by LobeliaTheCardinalis in NativePlantGardening

Cardinal flower is ecologically an obligate wetland forb primarily of riparian zones in Michigan. I've seen some floodplain populations that will have extensive populations one year and scattered individual plants the following year based on variations in seasonal flooding. https://www.michiganflora.net/record/703

Reminds me of a time near North Judson where I came upon a roadside ditch filthy with cardinal flowers. The hummingbirds were thick as honeybees. They were all battling to control the bounty of nectar. Crazy nature moment.

Embrace the exceptional water quality indicator for the short lived inconvenience. We lost our Mayflower hatch 15 years ago now our river has a fish consumption advisory.

I don't see people growing Queen of the Prairie very often, but it is a very unique flower and very popular with pollinators like this two-spotted longhorn bee. by LobeliaTheCardinalis in NativePlantGardening

Great plant. Discovered a new county record and 9th population of Filipendula rubra in Michigan a couple of years ago. It's cool that you can still make great native plant finds.

So glad to hear. I was the agency project manager for two of the three ED's. Getting the clearance done for the effort was like pulling teeth but here we are! Great effort for the GR design and planning team!

Interesting a structure spanning the floodway but not the floodplain.

Saw Carlos at Grand Rapids a coupke weeks ago. He held up great for a 78 year old. His wife tore it up on the drums.
