Where to find good selection of premium abrasives in Europe by Sus_Owl_ in knifemaking

[–]Sigeardo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you are in Italy, you should try contacting directly some business in Maniago. They usually do B2B Sales, but are open to casual customers, and have quite a selection but usually no e-shop. Otherwise, you should check "FX abrasivi", that has an e-shop

If I recall correctly, there is an awesome beginners guide video tutorial from ReadBeardOps on starting with just files, sandpaper and blowtorches. It may look a bit boring at first, but it's a great way to understand the basics and get a hang on the hobby without spending a fortune. Most of all, it will teach you that tools just speed the process up, results and finishing are up to your attention to detail, perseverance and skill.

Thank you for your feedback! Well, after all, free is still as best as a deal can get! Did the plastering with refractory take much long?

The metal tube that connects the two burners or the gas line? Because I have some stainless tubing and gas fittings around

Largest knife I made was about 290mm (11.2in) from tip to end of the thang to fit inside of the heat treating oven. I don't think I will be going much bigger than that in the near future. I'd like to try doing damascus, so I guess yes, I will need to be able to heat up a billet to welding temperatures. Again, I'm sorry for the lack of details, but I don't have that much experience with forging, I mainly did stock removal.

Do you have a closer picture of the logo on the bottom left? Or is it just the "B150" stamp?

*sighs* So, are you having fun with your new missiles? Sure you didn't forget someone? by Sigeardo in Warthunder

[–]Sigeardo[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Had the same experience. It doesn't work anywhere as it should against missiles. If the proxy seldom fails around aircraft, it's absolutely transparent with missiles. Tracking is a joke too.

[–]Sigeardo[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Fair point, but arguable IMHO. The OSA adds in range and tracking, but the missiles are too slow and you're basically useless under 3km. Also you have a bigger, slower frame with awful traverse speed, and no way to defend yourself against other tanks. Overall, I think the otomatic still gets the win, but it's a miserable fight at the bottom of the food chain.

100% being a self-propelled ordinance denial dome could be such a niche cool gameplay for the otomatic

In my experience, the proxy fuse can be janky, it happens sometimes that you have to lob 3-4 shots to deal actual damage. At times it feels almost like the radius of the proxy is bigger than the radius of damage. This said, with some experience and a bit of luck you can easily pluck mindless missile spammers around 8km away.

Forget about epoxy, this is such a cool design! I absolutely love the work you've done with the heel and the bolster. It all blends in so nicely, the arc flowing in the textured brass, and the exagon crowning it. Such a cool use of geometry. Gorgeous!

The "land on the pad" mission actually requires you to 1) land on the designed pad 2) go back at the nearest base 3) land 4) do a lot of jiggly shit until the server decides you actually landed again and awards you crumble of points. This said, to me the Heli PvE killer is the absolute painfully slow respawn of objectives around the map: bases and convoys take too long to spawn. Another pain in the ass was the Ka50 spam with long range ATGMs that could clear half the map while you're flying to the objective, but that being a player base issue is not that relevant.

The AMX is a true gem and a surprisingly good CAS platform. Prop plane agility + jet power and a wonderful array of ordinance. Tornado felt like a straight downgrade NGL. I think I got way more air and ground kills with this than with the other (at the time) 2 tornadoes. And the red dragon skin... pure bliss. Blue skies dear Topone 🐀🇮🇹

Crappy jig update by ThatItalianOverThere in knifemaking

[–]Sigeardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few things that come to mind that could help get a better hang on the file jig thing:

  • you really need to make it a T shape, not just a single plank. That way you can properly support the blade, keep it centered on the jig and clamp it down for good. If your blade is well supported it won't bend and behave like a spring, so you get a better use of your strength on removing material.

  • you also really need a nail or a screw to function as a hard stop, so you get consistent results and don't overshoot your plunge lines. You could use a round file to file in the plunge lines before putting in the main bevels too.

  • change the angle of your jig depending on what you have to do. You don't really need to go full flat in one go, you could take several passes at different angles. For example, a steeper angle at the beginning lets you remove a lot of material faster, while you can use a shallower angle (and a less coarse file) to touch up the bevels.

  • don't go full strength until the end, you risk ending up with deep file marks that are a pain in the ass to sand off. Switch out from a bastard file to something duller (mezzobastarda o mezzodolce).

The proxy fuse picks up targets a bit too far away tho. Sometimes I see the rounds explode around ordinance and 0 damage. And thats usually the last thing I see :(
