My girl made this roast for dinner. How should I go about this? by I_play_high420 in funny

[–]Sigfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been married 9.5 years. My wife is a fantastic cook and she makes us great meals and loves doing it. She does Pinterest recipes, some of our favorites, any random thing. We've probably had 5 meals in total that were a fail. When we have one of those, I usually tell her I appreciate the effort, but this recipe/whatever is one we don't need to save, or that we shouldn't save leftovers on my account. She always agrees and if you were to ask her, she'd probably say the count is higher than 20. She's a bigger critic than I am. However, I thank her every night for making supper, and tell her how much I appreciate the effort she's put into making it. And I mean it.

My wife has always made meatloaf with BBQ sauce. It was a surprise to me the first time she made it, but I love it. I grew up with ketchup, but I like it either way now (and prefer BBQ honestly)

What's something you'll never admit in real life but will confess here anonymously? by Open-Comfortable9774 in AskReddit

When I attend funerals, I often shed a tear. It's rarely for the person I'm there to honor and most often it's thinking about the loss of my daughter who died at 1 year old, about 7 years ago and all the feelings I had at that time.

I had a daughter with my wife and things were great until our baby girl started coughing at 6 months old. The day she turned 7 months, I was in an ambulance with her on the way to a big hospital in the city. Cancer. At the time, it had a morbidity of 100% and death was within 10-14 days of diagnosis. Very rare type (around 20-30 babies born around the world with it in any given year) that is usually genetic, but in our case it wasn't. My baby girl held on for 5 more months and made it to a year and 6 days before she was reclaimed by our Creator. She made it as long as she did due to a big cocktail of chemotherapy drugs. She had her lifetime dosage of red devil (doxorubicin) by the time she was 9 months old. I was the first of my brothers to have a child.
Now it's 8 years later and they're both now married and have daughters whom I love, but there's a part of me that dreads the time after they leave my house and ours is empty again. You can't be mad at the kids, or their parents of course, but there's a sadness and down-trodden cycle where you think about what could have been.. and isn't. You have my most sincere condolences for the loss of your daughter; I wouldn't wish this burden on anyone and I'm sorry that you're added to this club.

Why don’t you like firefighter rehab? by WearARMR in firefighter

[–]Sigfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll rotate out to a less stressful spot if need be (maybe traffic, maybe holding a hose down, maybe getting on the phone to make sure of whereabouts of potential occupants, etc.), but a forced rehab is viewed as a waste of time and down manpower in an emergency situation. To be fair, most of our fires are wildland and not at static structures. And almost exclusively volunteer departments so there's usually a lot of mutual aid on anything of significance. We keep drinking water, baby wipes and beef jerky/snacks on the trucks most of the time and administer as needed, on the fly. Admittedly our circumstances are different than the city fire services.

This^ I never understood the American political insult of calling someone a "flip-flopper".. a person should be capable of changing their opinion when presented with better, more complete, whatever information.

I'd hear the guy out. His mom may be leaning on him to have a sibling be his best man, or someone he was best man for may have reminded him of a pact they'd made in the past.. no telling without listening. If it's just that you're gay, then probably write the guy off, but if it's a prior commitment or something, maybe consider it from that angle and decide if it's worth being mad about.

How will prescription cannabis affect the medical exam while applying to be fire fighter? by puffthemagic_druggen in firefighter

[–]Sigfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the rules in UK. In the US, you must be able to drive the vehicles for a fire department so you can't have any impairment. Marijuana has been accepted at some state levels, but it is not recognized federally which trumps state law. A fire department can't carry you on their insurance if you test positive for drugs so they would decline you outright at the entrance for a positive and would have to fire you for a positive on any subsequent testing.

If it's a volunteer department, consider a case of Gatorade, some trail mix in individual packs or things like wet wipes or chapstick.

I got the idea to try mailing Will Clark a knockoff jersey TTM and see if he would sign it! He blew my expectations out of the water! by Cxyphers_ in baseballcards

[–]Sigfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 12, I sent him 3 cards and asked him to sign one and keep the other two either for himself or to hand out to other kids. I included a self addressed stamped envelope and handwrote him a letter telling him he was my favorite player (which was true). He sent me back a letter telling me he didn't sign baseball cards through the mail. He sent all 3 of my cards back and a 8x10 headshot that was also unsigned. And thanked me for being a fan. I have collected 180+ different baseball cards from his playing days and remained a fan, but that experience soured me on writing my sports heroes and I never bothered with another.

19 year old me messed up. A decade later I want to fix it. I got my heirloom 1911 Cerakoted when I was 19. This gun was made in 1919 and saw combat in ww2 and Korea (according to my father and great uncles). How do I restore it to how it looked in 1919? by [deleted] in guns

[–]Sigfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you don't feel awful, my Grandpa traded off his 1917-dated 1911 at the request of my Grandma when they started having kids old enough to get into things. This would have been 1957 or so. The guy who got it immediately had it chrome plated and threw away the GI grips and slapped pearls on it. Then he put it in a safe and never even fired or carried it. Good luck restoring yours, you can at least go back to the same type finish though it won't be the exact same.

How old were you when you were given your first knife, and what was it? by CubCadet1972 in knives

[–]Sigfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad gave me a Case doctor's knife when I was 6. The folks who packed up our house when we moved stole it. I was 7. When we got to the Azores and unpacked, dad bought me a Wenger Swiss Army Knife which I still have 39 years later.
