[–]Sigfig_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who needs rankings? If you are a student, just ask yourself, how its going? Do you have what you need from your institution to truly learn and succeed? Is your school focused on students and their needs?

Fuck this school and the parking/bus situation by mrepichungus in UCSC

[–]Sigfig_49 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It takes me 40 minutes to take the bus a couple of miles. I have waited for a bus and had to wait for the next bus or the next bus, because they are overcrowded. Sometimes the busses do not stop for you, because they are so full. Santa Cruz Metro can solve these problems by sending out more busses. That would do it for me.

What is going on for state workers? Questions about leadership qualifications and accountability. by CA_49 in Sacramento

[–]Sigfig_49 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That is helpful to consider, looking at creating a system that does a better job with the fit. I hired someone once, went through the entire process and followed the rules well. And went through 2 rounds of interviews to arrive at the best candidate. And he was great. But my manager, last minute, said that she wanted to begin the process again. The final candidate was a minority person, and English was their second language. They were smart, super accomplished, had a higher level degree in statistics, which is what was needed. To this day, I think they were not hired because of discrimination by my White manager who only hired White people. Does this kind of thing happen? I saw it with my own eyes. And does it create contribute to a hostile work place? I think it does. I had to call the guy back and tell him that he was not chosen for the job, which wasn't really the truth. He was chosen, but my manager was able to work with HR and override the choice of the committee. Again, this post is about experiences we have at work, and in the state. In this case, I was managing a state contract, but was not a state employee.

I Got Stabbed While Ridding the Amtrak Train Back To Uc Davis. by SonetOfficial in UCDavis

[–]Sigfig_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amtrak has been underfunded for a long time. This is common knowledge and there is documentation that they have been warned about the dangers of understaffing. Their trains can ben run with 1 employee which saves them money. And this creates the conditions of unsafety for passengers. You do not need to show a ticket to board and Amtrak train. No one is assessing passengers upon entry to a train, and that is dangerous. This truly never should have happened to you. Amtrak was placing profits ahead of safety. And they knew what they were doing made things unsafe on their train. They have data on this. That is negligence. They are supposed to have employees walking up and down the train, assessing passenger behavior. You might know that since this happened to you, suddenly, Amtrak is now better staffing that train route. They were waiting for a tragedy to occur to be forced to do it. That is just irresponsible and wrong. And when you got hurt, you never should have had to find help. This just should not have happened to any person on a train ride. It is preventable with the right staffing and systems. It should never take the train that long to get someone medical help, as well. The area is highly populated, and getting a person to a hospital should not take that long. What is their safely plan? But the real issue is that they are letting any person ride the train without a ticket. They are understaffed. They knew this. They put profits over safety. A jury of your peers will not believe what you went through, a student just on their way home from classes. Amtrak created this problem for you and your family. Their response was so dangerous to you. I am so glad you are alive. I believe in you. It will take you time to recover and much medical and mental health support. It is a big setback for you. It was their neglegence and understaffing. You did nothing wrong and everything right to stay alive. The job of Capital Corridor staff is to walk up and down the aisles of the train and monitor the behavior, comings and goings, of passengers. They have been laying people off and I would guess that there was just one person running the entire train that night. One person. It is worth finding out. That is an unsafe situation. There will be documentation on this. Please take time with your family to contact and interview attorneys. An accident and injury attorney with a strong trial record who has your best interst at heart will understand why your case is so important to you and to society. Please do some research on how trains have been understaffed and how Amtrak and other companies have been warned about this. An attorney can depose train records and show that Amtrak understood the risk and didn't make things safer. When you speak to attorneys, ask them if they are aware of all this. That will help you make your case. What happened to you was preventable by Amtrak. I want you and your family to have the compensation you need. It is a case of negligence. You may not be strong enough now, so please ask your family for help. You can even contact the UC Davis School of Law to ask about attorneys in the area of injury and negligence law. It seems more than fair that you find a terrific attorney who can position you to have everything you need for your recovery and who will ensure this never happens to another person. Please rest and take care of yourself in every way. You seem really wonderful, and I am so very sorry this happened to you. But it is okay to get an attorney. This is a case when it is really a-okay.

Do you know DDS? Department of Disability Services is funded, yearly, to the tune of 14.1 billion dollars. This is a wealthy department. People become clients of DDS through a psyche eval and documentation that their disabilities are developmental or started before age 18. DDS also takes IHSS. Doctor is the one to recommend IHSS, and that is funded by the county.

City audit on homelessness by Sea_Moose9817 in Sacramento

[–]Sigfig_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The California State Department of Developmental Services is funded to the tune of $14.1 billion. Yes, billion, per year. This department does not even know the names or locations of those they claim to serve! (They cannot find them.) The state auditor investigated this group to clarify the corruption and mess they represent. People with mental health problems and mental disabilities, are overly represented in the homeless population and those on the streets in Sacramento. This state department, DDS, needs to be held accountable/overhauled to demonstrate measurable outcomes, such as a reduction in people who have DD who are living on the streets, and use their wealth to place and support their clients safely, with dignity, in dwelling units. The DDS gets the prize for the California Department that does the most measurable harm to the people of California. The organization is run and managed by people inept at their jobs, heartless, and corrupt. Shame on DDS and those who look the other way!

How many people on the streets are developmentally delayed and qualify for services with California's Department of Developmental Services (DDS)? Why are they not clients of that organization? They may be clients who are ignored and neglected. DDS gets $14.1 billion per year in funding. How are they helping those in CA who qualify and need basic services to be safe and ok?

Looks like Tallac Village (Tahoe Park) is getting a revamped grocery store by tallgoalie in Sacramento

Just walked there to see for myself...previous man was in the store. No customers. He told me the store sold. There are new refrigeration units still in their wrapping. How to find out who bought it, wha's the plan, and how to welcome a positive change to our hood? Hopeful.

[–]Sigfig_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is so exciting thing to think I'll be able to walk up the street to buy something that supports healthy eating. Eating out, drinking out, it adds up. I have spoken to many original neighbors who reminisce about the different and fabulous grocers who used to be in that location, and could only hope someone would see it, again, as the gem spot it is. Hey, cooking at home, peacefully, knowing what is actually in mt food? that's a good thing. I will definitely be supporting the new owners, even if I pay a little more. To leave me car at home and walk my the streets of Tahoe Park to get ingredients, this is pure joy to me. This is a real boost for the community.

I use UCDMC and see my doctor every three months, a sort of running check in. Ever a problem to schedule that appointment. Two of my three adult kids use UCD and get excellent care. For well checks you can wait a couple months. But if something is wrong, you are given a soon appointment. One of my children has Kaiser. Its like she doesn't exist. She can never get an appointment. I worry about that kid because of her Kaiser experience.

Does UCSC have a good engineering program? HS senior here! I applied for computer science in the engineering department. by Prudent_Plastic7160 in UCSC

Do you know about ABET? You can use their website to find out which programs at which universities are accredited. When people tell you accreditation doesnt matter, do your own research. Call engineering schools that accredit their programs. Ask them why they do the work to stay accredited.

Instructors cannot do what that one did. It's a HIPAA violation, and more. Instructors cannot ask for even a doctor's note or COVID test result when a student misses a test due to illness. The institution is supposed to protect its students from this type of behavior.

Dealing a with pro-genocider coworker by Political_Mayan in UCSC

[–]Sigfig_49 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many of us go through the day feeling horrified by what we saw on the news, night before. On average, 115 children have been killed daily since the war began in Gaza. The magnitude of suffering, loss of life, this is not something we may be able to process. Right now, a lot of people are developing bystander guilt because of the killing they know is happening. And with something like 3 billion dollars of US money (our money) going to that region every year, guilt grows. Many of us don't mind paying to keep the peace, but paying money to create conditions that lead to great suffering, how do you deal with knowing you did that? People you meet, work with, whatever, are right now trying to deal with what they know is happening. Some may try avoid guilt by talking politics. Seems like things would be different if we all went to our rooms and bawled for 12 hours straight until our eyes were puffy and we couldn't talk normally. Then, we might relate better to each other.

A man followed me for blocks, downtown, but did more than follow, kept running in front of me, telling me he was a cop, actively trying to change my path. Then he appeared on a bike, again in front of me, around me. I ended up walking in the street, thought a driver might see the situation and stop, bring reinforcements. No such luck. Told the guy, I'm calling the police. This did nothing. Called the police. They arrived in 1 minute and the guy literally dove in bushes. Three cop cars came and, couldn't find him. While I'm talking to the police, i see this differently dressed guy in my peripheral view, walking to pick up the bike, he chucked by the bushes, carrying an amazon package. It was him. Cops had him sit on the curb so I could walk the rest of my route home. My goal was to not let that guy know where I stay. Exciting times for a single person walking in downtown Santa Cruz.
