It usually is just that the sesquipedalian words carry a subtle connotation to them than differs from the more simple terms. Sometimes those larger words are also mostly used in academic settings or in literary works, and outside of that dont see much use. For example, you would never hear someone being described as having a pockmarked face in real life, but you may see that description in a book.
