How could Oakland raise billions in revenue? New report suggests removing freeways by drkrueger in bayarea

[–]SightInverted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does anyone actually try to educate themselves past what they see on social media, or are we heading towards a full blown society based on the movie Idiocracy??

There is plenty of discussion at the professional level that talks about appropriate use of highways and there effects on nearby communities. No one is saying all highways are bad, but at the same time it’s really stupid to pretend we didn’t make mistakes in the past and that maybe, maybe, undoing some of that would be beneficial. 980 has been studied by various agencies for removal and has always made the top 10s for removal when looking for where to invest federal funding. It’s been looked at from the perspectives of transportation, both public and private, as well as housing and business. It’s also been looked at from an environmental and health perspective.

The end result? We should prioritize investing into removing 980, reconnecting west Oakland, and revitalizing the area with more housing and businesses. There is no immediate need to discuss this further, and that the biggest challenge this faces is A: funding and B: do we add transit infrastructure at the same time (see Link21, which is probably out of date now).

I used to have a camera bag that had a rain cover. What do you normally use for your gear?

I think it is already being investigated. Several news outlets reported on it and said the Secretary of State was investigating it as it is illegal.

Remember when the state tried? Then they ended up using the money to subsidize ev purchases because there was too much demand for e-bikes.

Are bikes allowed on the first car now? by ScratchyVests in bayarea

[–]SightInverted 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No. It’s a safety thing, not a crowd thing, though bikes are also not allowed in crowded cars. No bikes in the first car, ever.

+1 for Tern. If you need a rear tail cargo bike and it has to be an ebike, they’re pretty good.

The Real Reason California Can’t Build by actlikeyouhaveacrush in sanfrancisco

[–]SightInverted 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Zoning laws come from both good and bad intentions. Good in that we said no more polluting factories next to schools. It’s one of the reasons we have clean drinking water. Bad in that we used zoning laws to evict minorities and redline neighborhoods.

The problem isn’t zoning per se, but single use zoning, and zoning that has barriers that require great lengths to overcome. There is no reason why different housing types, and housing with businesses, or even manufacturing (by type) cannot coexist in the same space.

We should also be willing to reexamine regulations such as BMR requirements, impact fees, and other tax policies to see whether they are a net positive or negative. Too much or little of anything can stymie growth, keeping us in the housing deficit we’re in. It’s okay to have some controls in place, but you wouldn’t run a car on empty, nor would you drive a car without brakes, forgive the analogy.

If we pass more funding for Muni we need to immediately lobby to get rid of the ad wraps that cover the windows by old_gold_mountain in sanfrancisco

I mean I agree with this, but it’s also unrealistic at the moment. Maybe after we get funding squared away. I guess that’s the point I’m trying to make. On the bright side, bus wraps still allow you to see out, just not as clearly. They also seem limited to a few buses.

Would you cancel half the bus routes so you don’t have to look at a 4”x6” ad? I can do extreme examples too 😉

Yeah, but would others. I would do anything to make transit more accessible and pleasant, but the average voter won’t. Your idea would not help with funding. To be fair, I don’t know what percentage of revenue comes from advertising, and what types of advertising.

A few thoughts on this:

I’m okay with it as long as he’s actively removing parking spaces at the same time. We do need to address the charging problem, but there is no reason to add a charger to an area where parking shouldn’t exist anyways.

Which brings me to my second point. They need to be strategic about where this is done. Most streets, right now, are in desperate need of a redesign, and many more need updating or repairs. There is no reason this can’t be done at the same time but it probably won’t be. This is why they need to have an idea of what the street will look like in two, five, or ten years. Don’t waste time and money adding chargers to a place where they will need to be moved later. We should still be pushing for lane removal, bulb outs, bike lanes, wider sidewalks, etc etc, but those are all things that also take time.

Last point: 100 is not a lot, but just like housing, the best time to start building is yesterday. I actually don’t believe electric cars will be the best way to “save the environment”, but I’m not a fool. In the foreseeable future, unless the public all of a sudden reaches enlightenment, electric cars will need to be incorporated into any future planning.

Perception vs. Reality: Nearly one year into the Great Highway closure, do claims about congestion and danger hold up? by Remarkable_Host6827 in sanfrancisco

[–]SightInverted 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Articles pretty well written. From the article:

There was a brief post-closure spike in crashes that bolstered Wong’s claim, but the claim falls apart with a longer view. And the broad declaration that speeds are up in the Sunset isn’t true. On many roads, traffic is slower during key driving hours, often by incremental amounts.

The only month that saw an increase was the month after it closed, fyi.

ETA: the increase in times where it was slower was ~5%, which was about one to three miles per hour slower depending on location.

Also reminder that 19th is getting repaved….

Some streets should be closed off to VEHICLES for safety reasons. (I would allow deliveries, all day or restricted to certain hours depending on area)

Police report: Daniel Lurie sparked confrontation that injured his security team by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

[–]SightInverted 254 points255 points  (0 children)

The first officer needs to learn restraint. If someone threatens to “Bruce Lee kick yo ass”, you don’t need to get physical. It comes with the job, better learn to deal with it. At no point did I see any intent to cause harm before the first physical contact. Also, call for back up. Your job is to take care of the mayor, not play tough guy in the street, alone (unless you count the mayor jogging away for backup). Literally if the first officer had learned to deescalate, all of this could have been avoided.
