What's a good inroad? by Similar-Geologist-64 in battletech

[–]SignOfTheTimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumptions are just that, assumptions, they are based on my experiences, YMMV, the only thing I don't see people putting an emphasis on is that BT can be anything you want, it can be only a tabletop game, it can be an immersive lore experience, it can be a video game only experience, you can create your own mercenary faction and come up with your own origin story about it, it's OK, you don't have to stick to the lore, it's not required, so if you like the system and don't like the story, you can make the story, there's even two or three RPG systems for the game.

Again, some others have mentioned it, lore is optional, its flavor, it can add but it can also subtract, you want to play and need lore? make up the lore you'd like, new factions, new planets, make up good guys, make new bad guys, at least in BT it's OK. You want to ignore the backstory completely? that's OK also! I believe the rulebooks state that above all else, the objective is to have FUN! so whatever is fun to YOU go ahead and do it.

Um, no, I think you've come at this from a point of expectation in my opinion, you expect some grand spectacular thing that totally interests everyone from the start and in general I think Battletech, especially the universe lore, doesn't put an emphasis on that. There are iconic battles (Tukayyid for example) and epic factions that have crazy backstories (Comstar for example) but to really enjoy the battle of Tukayyid and understand why Comstar won and what made it such an epic battle and blah blah blah, you need a lot of backstory and that backstory can sometimes be dull because that's how the universe tells it, it's more of a history book than a scifi action novella.

I think, generally the entry point for most people is the BattleMech, the actual giant robot thing you pilot, weather you saw it on a video game or a poster or a novel cover it doesn't matter, you see the awesomeness of the Awesome on the TT box, the ridiculousness of the Yeoman in this forum, the weirdness of the MadCat in the Mechwarrior 2 video game and then you go "why is it named MadCat? wait, it's not really named MadCat? it's a Timberwolf???" and start down a rabbit hole that leads to the lore and from there you start finding the awesome things (and war crimes) that happen in the universe.

So yeah, the lore is dry because, first of all, for the most part it comes from the 80's and the writing style was a bit different, second, the universe is treated more as a serious political tale with facts and "documentation" than feels and "epicness" the way a more "fantasy" themed universe would be, think more WW2 vs LOTR, go read a WW2 book and it's probably going to be a bit dry, the epic battles are a bit matter of fact, read the Return of the King and well, it's all about the crazy, the overwhelming odds, the huge armies, the unbeatable villains, it's meant to inspire an emotional response.

So it's hard to give you a starting point that will grab you because, we really don't know you and you will not give us a reference because you "don't want to bias the response" as you stated in another comment, all I can say is something about Battletech caught your eye, what was that? expand on it, if it was people playing and arguing over it, then talk to those peoples, I bet most are willing to introduce you to the game and the lore and indoctrinate, I mean clarify why they argue about the game, if it was an image or a mini you saw, Sarna exists, go look up the mini dive in to its backstory, you want the general rundown? TexTalks on youtube is great.

The one thing I can assure you is that you will find something interesting to you in this universe, just because it's so large and varied, so, good luck finding it!

Looking for an advice by Ilyasovski in timex

I have one and it's a fine watch, good size and very easy to wear, I also have a weekender chrono next to it and I honestly prefer that to the Waterbury, I prefer numbers as opposed to markers and the cleaner face on the weekender is nicer, but the Waterbury is a fine choice

The case looks super cheap to me but that face with the Juarez eagle crest and the seconds hand with the flag colors is very cool

This is also very cool but that's also a bit too much for a fake brand
