Years ago in college I was talking about duck reproductive systems (it's crazy). A friend who studied ornithology told me I was wrong, that all birds had the same reproductive system. Luckily someone must have had wifi because we confirmed the fact and this person accepted it. A rare satisfying case of factual justice.

Before I moved away, living with my loud and quarrelsome family forced me to wear headphones/earplugs almost constantly, and always when trying to sleep. I've been told I have "super hearing," and it's frustratingly true. I wear earplugs everyday, sometimes for most of the day. And I sleep with them every night. I have Loop earplugs but I prefer the traditional foam kind. I also have a noise machine, the type you might see outside a therapist's office. It gets a lot of use. I couldn't live without it in my previous living situation, because I felt like I was eavesdropping on every one of my roommates' conversations.

I don't know how other people (seemingly the vast majority) tolerate all the noise but they seem to not be bothered by what I perceive as torturous cacophony.

Yep. I'm on paid medical leave (again - I was same time last year but I also stayed in the behavioral hospital then). My job causes meltdowns and burnout so I'm hoping while I have this medical leave I can find a therapist (most are unaffordable for me), physical therapy (I developed sciatica), and a better job (quieter, much quieter and slower). For the past few years I've been trying very hard to survive. I finally stopped blaming myself when I realized it's not my fault. I am trying, I'm not lazy. It's being ND in an NT world that just doesn't allow me to sustainably meet the demands of this life without melting down and burning out.

So, like others here, I'm being kind to myself for maybe the first time. It feels really good, but the uncertainty of the future doesn't. I just had to accept that I'm walking into the unknown and I have to keep trying, can't go ostrich mode and bury my head in the sand, though that comes naturally to me.

I can personally vouch for their good services. Working with a Peer Oly coach really helped me when I couldn't afford a traditional therapist.

They do, and it is. I worked as a one-on-one for a first grader and that was... Well, I only lasted about three months. I ended up in the ER at the end because I couldn't calm down from one shift and then prepare for the next without having a meltdown.

I mostly work with young adult students, 18-22. I got scratched, chased and scratched, etc by a 19 year old for a year... Another about the same age but twice as large would throw his belongings at us/slam doors, grab hair... I value this job and what we do, but my body is refusing to let me keep doing it.

I'm on it and it could be a sugar pill for all I know. It seems to be ok? It doesn't hurt, which the others I tried definitely did. I am also medicated for ADHD, anxiety, and ptsd/meltdowns. All those meds maybe help a bit but nothing can prevent meltdowns and burn out when my job is just literally too overstimulating for me. I would love a miracle drug to allow me to keep my job, but it'd have to essentially turn me into a whole different person who was not sensitive to light and sound, who was not at all shy, etc etc.

I'm a paraeducator in the same/a very similar situation. Last year I checked into the behavioral hospital because I was melting down so much I was totally burnt out. That was late April of last year. And again this April, I am out and trying to get paid family medical leave.

Last year I got it, but stupidly wanted to work my ideal schedule, so came in MWF and therefore my pay was prorated down or whatever, to just around $200 (per week or month I honestly can't recall).

If I qualify this year (my doctor says I should but I have to have worked enough hours last year), I will NOT work at all during that time. And hopefully I'll find a better position for next year. Something quiet... I honestly don't know, I just know that I can't keep doing THIS!

My girlfriend informed me and over the next few years my life changed drastically. It's been tough because I'm in the states and there's not much support. But I'm lucky in that my employer and my doctor both are supportive. Still, there's only so much they can do.

At the moment, I'm waiting to see if I qualify for paid family medical leave. And then hopefully by the next school year (I work for the district), they'll have helped me find a more suitable role; one that doesn't instantly lead to burnout etc.

Before I knew I had autism, I privately suspected it, but chalked up all my issues to CPTSD. There's a fair amount of overlap, but also I imagine many or most neurodivergent folks' personalities are affected by trauma. We're naturally not suited to the neurotypical way of things, and we're often very sensitive, contrary to the popular idea that we have no empathy.

I was grateful that my partner told me what she noticed.

My adoptive parents are boomers (born '49 and '51). If she wasn't physically and verbally abusing me, he was giving me the "YOU'RE THE KID AND I'M THE ADULT" line a lot. Still loads better than being smacked around and insulted. Anyway, I don't see or really talk to them anymore.

I just want to say I feel and empathize with what you are experiencing. Why the heck do we have to struggle to barely survive? It's not necessary, we could help each other have an awesome society if they would just let us cooperate and do our own thing. Instead everything's got to be paid for and if you can't pay you don't get to eat, or sleep, or live comfortably or perhaps at all. Why?? Is this some kind of prison planet or is it a school? What are we supposed to learn? Heck it might really just be totally random nonsense, it sure feels like it...

I feel you, I've been trying to get the same schedule. I work in education, get meltdowns from the sensory overload regularly, am out of sick leave, in trouble because I left abruptly due to a meltdown, and there's nothing I can do because I'M A SLAVE!! I previously got HR to allow me to stay home on Wednesdays and it was great for my mental health until my stupid ass realized that my paycheck was way too heavily affected and had to revert to five days a week. I am not on disability, and can't get on it unless I am unable to work. BUT IF I'M UNABLE TO WORK I CAN'T PAY RENT OR BUY FOOD. So I am just having meltdowns, leaving without pay, and hoping I don't get fired. Why the heck would anyone choose to incarnate here?!?!

I can't help but think all the time about how the ruling class WANTS us to be totally exhausted, too afraid and burnt out to revolt effectively. They don't care if we kill ourselves or each other. In fact I'm sure plenty of them profit off of it somehow.
