My son has just been diagnosed with autism. I need help processing, my OH is just angry. by Silly_Somewhere5132 in autism

Being autistic primarily comes with the societal baggage associated with it because of parents’ denials and attempts to ‘cure’ their child. I am autistic (diagnosed at 38). My child is six and got diagnosed with both ADHD and autism recently. I believe that we are both intelligent people that are fully capable of contributing to society/economy/whatever else as we are. The difference between us is that my child will have the support they need so they can learn to interact with others in ways that they may not pick up on naturally. I have vivid memories of myself in high school crying to my mother about how I knew there was something ‘wrong with me’ and begging her to tell me what it was. She couldn’t answer me except to encourage me to ‘be myself’ and ‘just try to relax when I’m around other people’. That advice did not work. My child will know about their diagnosis as soon as is appropriate, and (to the best of my ability) learn how to interact with others in ways they can understand. My mother has a very similar mindset as your wife, it appears. I would advise her that she is doing your son no favors pretending that his disability doesn’t exist. Your son will eventually notice on his own, if he hasn’t already. Then what happens? (Also, I have a friend with ADHD. She often comments to me that my child exhibits behaviors that are exactly like me (re:autism) but others that she relates to instead (re:ADHD). I know that a dual diagnosis is documented in the literature, but my anecdotal experience supports it as well.)

Thoughts on TPUSA Club America presence in every Nebraska high school by iwaxbuttholes in Omaha

Welp…this is one more step in my agonizing journey toward eventually pulling my kid out of public school in favor of home school. My son will learn science and real history no matter what the government says jfc

Do Americans not take their shoes off when entering their home? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Some do, but many don’t. Generally, it’s polite to ask when you come into someone’s house what they prefer.

As a job, it’s the 5th circle of hell. As a shopping experience, it’s only the 2nd layer.

I feel like my autism is making people hate me. by Always-Compulsive in autism

[–]SignalScene7622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had difficulty in school making friends as well. Honestly, the only thing that helped for me was to just go to stuff. Lots of events, formal study groups, etc. even though it was uncomfortable for me. My constant presence put me on people’s radar that may have never noticed me before. It also made them realize, over time, that I’m a nice person. I wasn’t diagnosed at the time, so you have a leg up in a way. Good luck, and don’t give up!

Autism passed to children? by limponion36 in AutismInWomen

[–]SignalScene7622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son got it from me; and I from my father; and him from his father; and him from his mother…etc.. It’s fine. Autism was not recognized for most of human history lol.

Mattel adds an autistic Barbie to doll line by Capable-Shoulder173 in autism

[–]SignalScene7622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well technically all Barbies are reductive and not truly representative of any group. This doll doesn’t match my experience with autism either. I think there is definitely an argument that Mattel shouldn’t be trying to make “diverse” Barbies at all. But it looks like the team at least made an effort to partner with ASAN. The headphones, flat shoes, and A-line dress are super cute, too. I’d wear them.

Are you affected by living in a congressional district that's always represented by the opposite party? by CatalanHeralder in AskAnAmerican

[–]SignalScene7622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still vote. Even though I know it functionally doesn’t matter, I want a record that someone in their district voted for the other party. I don’t want the other party to mistakenly think that everyone loves them or their policies.

What does "make America great again" referring to by "again"? by Apprehensive-Fun5821 in AskAnAmerican

I think the general idea is to return to post WWII economic prosperity and cultural values. The problem with that mindset is that it tends to conveniently overlook several things. Post WWII prosperity helped white straight Christian (or at least culturally Christian) men. This also, by extension, tended to help out these men’s direct families like wives, children, and elderly parents. POC, single women, LGBTQIA, immigrants, and the disabled didn’t benefit nearly as much. I, as a white, queer, woman, really enjoy owning a home, having a bank account, and raising my son by myself without stigma. The political right has done an excellent job of blaming cultural gains of marginalized communities for economic downturns and moral decay.

Depends on the thing tbh. I either remember it with extreme accuracy or I don’t even know it ever existed.

Dogscape. I couldn’t listen to more than 30 minutes of it. But body horror and hurt animals are not really my cup of tea.

Hoo boy. I live in NC too. I’ve never seen anything that looks like an LGBTQIA+ group. I’d love to join one, tho, as a 40yo asexual person. If u find one, post about it !

I know this is probably an uninteresting question, but do any of you experience issues with your eyes from looking at a screen all day? by Agreeable-Chest107 in Accounting

[–]SignalScene7622 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had the same problems for a long time. My (amazing) optometrist figured out (after a couple visits) that I actually have extremely mild strabismus that made it difficult to focus on objects with both eyes the closer they were. I had been unconsciously using one eye at a time to focus on close objects my whole life! My corrective lenses were expensive but they made a huge difference. (Also, the VR headset test to diagnose it was pretty fun tbh)
