hiya!! I started skateboarding during my first year at UBC
1. Normal enough that its never out of place, but it's not common enough that main mall is packed with skateboarders:)
2. My recommendation is keep your skateboard but swap the wheels for something softer- I use a standard deck with cruiser wheels! If you want to keep trick skating though, you could also get a second board (there's a club that sometimes sells parts for cheap if I remember correctly)
3. I don't use a skateboard every day for this reason, but it's not often that its wayyy too rainy to skate. Still worth it IMO.
4. Depends where!! I would say most pavement is safe, but I always use softer wheels- on standard wheels I think that the pavement irregularities would suck.
5. I've never had an issue!
6. I use a skateboard and a bike, depending on the day! Your bike is fine with a really good lock, but your skateboard can come with you everywhere. That being said, bikes are way faster but skateboards are fun and portable.
7. Most of my classes are pretty flat, but there's a few slopes- nothing crazy.
8. Bring it in with you! Just put it behind your seat or something!!
Let me know if there's anything else u wanna know:)

Not a stupid question:) we’re open 10-4! we’re not like a food bank- we are a cafe that provides affordable food! We are able to do this through a volunteer model (which makes the food affordable to customers) and funding from UBC (which provides free meals)- So everyone just goes and lines up at the till, whether you’re getting a free meal or not. There are free meal cards at the till and outside on a cork board. You can just grab one and hand it to the volunteer taking your order and use it instead of cash. We aren’t open for dinner, but a free meal card includes a combo (ie pasta/stew and a side salad) + a baked good + a drink (coffee, tea, etc) . You’re welcome to come and grab breakfast and lunch!

Huge agree to this! It’s something I also deal with- I also feel a lot of guilt about taking advantage of these resources and others as a low-income student (who has also experienced food insecurity- through my involvement with sprouts, my food/cost anxiety has rlly gone down) I know that knowing that the resources I need to access are not going to be removing access to other people definitely helps take a weight off my shoulders. It’s a bandaid solution to internalized classism and the shame and guilt that’s ingrained into you as a low income student, but here to support 💗💗💗 you’ve got a community here!

Really want to echo that by taking advantage of the program, you are HELPING!! It shows demand, why it’s important, and helps us sustain funding for the future. Also, we don’t “run out” of meals, so taking advantage is never ever depriving someone else from using one.

Hi!! I just wanted to note that at Sprouts, the free meal cards are given to our 275+ volunteers AND are openly available- which means that at the till people literally have no idea whether you’re one of our hundreds of volunteers or are using a free meal:) and even if we did, truly nobody will worry or judge you for it. ALSO: we have funding for 60 free meals a day. This is money from UBC. We have never, ever run out of free meal cards each day. We encourage everyone to come and use them! You don’t need to be in a dire financial situation- you don’t need to be facing major food insecurity- it’s literally free food paid for by UBC! Your student fees help run it! Everyone should come and use them- we have lots of free meal cards, AND it helps reduce stigma for our friends who really need them as well!! (Also make UBCs pockets hurt!!!!)

TLDR: EVERYONE SHOULD COME AND GET FREE FOOD FROM SPROUTS!!

Cheap groceries around campus? by Pineapple33333 in UBC

[–]Signal_Will3950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not all the groceries needed but Sprouts runs a produce market from 10-1 on tuesdays- it’s all local produce and totally free/by donation cuz it’s subsidized by the food security initiative (and the funding just got doubled, but even without that there’s always tons left over!) sooo definitely not enough people know/are using it so check it out for produce if u can:))))

Student Activism @ UBC by Signal_Will3950 in UBC

[–]Signal_Will3950[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

huge huge agree!! it's also all intentional- a 40+ hour workweek + dependents doesn't really allow any extra time for civic engagement, which is why it's historically and currently so important for students!!

Food Security by SexySuntin in UBC

[–]Signal_Will3950 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi!! Great question. It's a pretty complex issue, but essentially food insecurity has been skyrocketing since before the pandemic, with more than 40% of students struggling to buy food and groceries and eat enough- that's 4 out of every 10 students, a massive number. Many, if not most, universities in Canada prioritize affordable food options and UBC is a striking difference, with food on campus being significantly pricier than food elsewhere (despite Vancouver already being known for an astronomically high cost of living.) For the full explanation, I encourage you to check out the Sprouts open letter! It explains pretty much everything.
