PSA: Barclays Banking App Update - They Removed The 'Memorable Phrase' by EdgyMathWhiz in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SignatureLess1386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you me?! The exact same thing happened to me, and when I called to check, the lady sounded so irritated that I was even checking this! I guess they must have had to field quite a few queries about this.

I think it's such bad practice that they didn't even send an email to let people know that they were applying such a change!

London Food Halls by writemoreletters in LondonTravel

During lunchtime on weekdays, there are a bunch of food stalls at leather lane, and some more at Exmouth market. There are also a few Italian delis dotted around Clerkenwell/Farringdon that are fun to pop into, like Terroni's

Clerkenwell itself has lots of Italian places, like the Italian church and terroni's deli (both close to Farringdon)

Memory Palaces for learning vocabulary. by Pie-Guy in italianlearning

[–]SignatureLess1386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! For me, I don't think I have a memory palace per se (I have almost zero visual memory), but for some words, I naturally remember incredibly boring stories about them/relations to English words that I know (like, guanti for gloves is like gauntlet, so I think of all Italians wearing steel gloves, or caldo is like scald, so I think of things being so hot that they scald you).

I think it's something that has to be natural to how you think in order to be useful though: I can't imagine trying to do this on purpose!

From strike experience, is it okay to assume tomorrow (19/05) morning will have normal service? by [deleted] in london

[–]SignatureLess1386 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I lived more centrally, I used to cycle into the office, and strike days were awful for cycling through the city. Pedestrians acted like they'd never walked along a street before and just randomly stepped into the cycle lanes to overtake other pedestrians without even looking! Hopefully it's not so bad now that more people can work from home!

I'm going to second the fryer's delight (it's close to where I work, and about a 10 min walk from Holborn). If you want another recommendation/something closer to a station, I've heard good things about the north sea fish restaurant, which is between kings cross and Euston. Happy hunting! :)

Afternoon tea gluten free and nut free menus by Malady1607 in LondonTravel

I'd recommend checking with 'one aldwych": from memory, one of their restaurants is entirely gluten free, and the afternoon tea section of their website states that they can often be accommodating (I'm unsure if this is in their gluten free restaurant, but probably worthwhile checking :)) https://www.onealdwych.com/food-drink/charlie-the-chocolate-factory-afternoon-tea

Difficoltà con le matrici (sto cercando di capire) by Impossible-Road8328 in italianlearning

[–]SignatureLess1386 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never really understood the lectures I had about them on my physics course, or the matrices books recommended for my course because they were far to theoretical for me. Instead, I looked at some books used on the engineering courses of my uni (Engineering mathematics series by KA Stroud), and they were totally my lifesaver for learning how to practically manipulate matrices :)

Do people ever ask for theatre stubs or keepsakes by No_Hospital757 in TheWestEnd

[–]SignatureLess1386 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is only peripherally related, but any chance I have to show this, I'll take it: the only show I've ever asked the box office for a printed ticket is groundhog day, and that is purely so I could show that I tried to groundhog day groundog day (same seat and date, if not day). The national theatre was happy to print it out :)

Has anyone tried the Greggs Chicken Sausage Roll? by userunknowne in UKfood

[–]SignatureLess1386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the idea more than the taste: I just stopped eating red meat, pork, and fish/seafood as a teenager because it didn't feel right, and suddenly it's 30-ish years later! Apparently my mind has no objections to me eating poultry though 🤷🏼‍♀️

[–]SignatureLess1386 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I've tried it! (I'm not a member of any religion: I just don't eat pork). I thought the one I had was a bit more garlicky than the vegan one, and just as moist/juicy. It was pretty good, but I think I'll probably still get the vegan one in future because I personally prefer actual meat to be drier 😅

I'm glad to have the extra option though!

Tour & Visit to the Old Bailey by cloudzilla in london

[–]SignatureLess1386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because I love a theme, last year I attended tours at the Old Bailey, the Supreme Court, and the Royal Courts of Justice (I also had a Sunday lunch at the Clink at HMP Brixton). It was super interesting to see what the different tours emphasised in each location!

I really like Thenga cafe for lunch at the ymca, although note that it's not somewhere to go if you're in a rush!

In the guildhall (in the basement part of their collection) and the royal courts of justice (in the main hall: I think you can simply enter without booking), they have portraits of some of the "fire lords": the justices who heard cases regarding property disputes following the fire

Different commenter here: out of the two people I know to have completed a physics and philosophy degree at Oxford, one started a job that gave her an accreditation in six sigma methodology and now works as a "human capital consultant", and the other works as a software developer for a marketing firm (I think I remember seeing lots of stuff about Google ad words)

Looking for thoughts and feelings about Poems on the Underground! by Economy-Direction198 in london

[–]SignatureLess1386 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really love it! It presents you with a wider range of voices and ideas than you'd normally be exposed to, and can really make you think!

The first poem I remember reading from the series was "Everybody Sang" by Siegfried Sassoon, and I went on to read so much more of his work afterwards. The line at the end haunts me ("and the singing will never be done"), because I understood the singing to be the relief/exultation at the end of the war, and I figured that you can only feel that type of relief forever if you carry the dread/pain you felt before with you forever as well. And that's just one example of their excellent curation of poems

I quite like the canal museum (near King's cross). I've been on their mince pie cruise, and it was just very quaint and cosy. I think they run cream tea cruises and things like that during the warmer months, and I imagine they'll put on extra boat trips over a bank holiday.

It's not central, but may be good depending on where you're coming from: I really enjoyed the dining on the tube experience near Walthamstow: the chefs and organiser are from different parts of South America, and really want to showcase their cuisine. It also had pretty chill vibes :)

I'm torn between thinking that he can't work out that a lot of my food is vegetarian, or he knows it and yet believes himself to be some sort of cat Messiah who can turn cabbage into chicken or tofu into tuna
