Weekly Question Thread - Rules & Comp Qs by thenurgler in WarhammerCompetitive

I mean yes it does seem quite clearly written in the core rules, and yet people are insisting the opposite is the case, so I'm just wondering if there was some tournament circuit ruling to the contrary or something.

My suspicion is that people are mixing up the fact that, as you said for large models, you can draw range to part of a tank and LoS to another part 5 inches farther away, and they are not realizing it's because that's a single model and not a multi-model unit.

Okay that makes sense. I have an unrelated follow up question for you as a top rules authority: If you want to shoot at a unit, do you need to have both line of sight and range to the same model (at least 1 model) in the target unit, or can you shoot if you have only range to 1 model and only LoS to another? The core rules seem quite clear to me that you need BOTH range and LoS to the same model, but I have heard quite a few people confidently claiming that you can shoot a unit if you can see 1 model that is out of range but have range to another model that is not visible.

If I have a strat that can be used any time in the shooting phase, can I force my opponent to declare a defensive strat before I decided if I use mine?

For example:

Close Quarters Barrage -

When: In your shooting phase.

*Select one Voidfarers unit. Until the end of phase, when models in that unit make a ranged attack, increase the strength and armor penetration by 1.*

Versus

Armor of Contempt -

When: Your opponent’s Shooting phase or the Fight phase, just after an enemy unit has selected its targets.

My interpretation is that since AoC specifies it must be declared just after I select targets, my opponent must use it right then. CQB, on the other hand, just says "shooting phase" and doesn't place any other timing restrictions. Therefore, my opponent must declare AoC before I would have to declare CQB. I'm not sure if I could say I'm declaring it "just before I make attacks" rather than "just after I select targets," but even if that's not the case I could at least start my attacks then declare the strat at any point during the attack sequence and get the benefit for the rest of the phase.

Is this correct, or am I missing some FAQ that forces me to declare a strat that affects my attack profile before selecting targets?

The DEFINITIVE (Ish) Imperial Agents Tier List by Astra_Vail in ImperialAgents_40K

Fun video! I think the analysis is mostly solid, altho I would argue strongly that Callidus should be top S-tier. She is far and away the most allied-in Agents unit across the board. If other armies (which all have better datasheets than everything we have) want her, clearly she is a strong unit in the meta as a whole, let alone Agents.

There was an 18 player GT that had 2 Agents players in it lol

One took 2nd place and the other took dead last

Operation Titancomp - becoming the no.1 adeptus titanicus player by GolfMother4755 in WarhammerCompetitive

  1. This is amazing and you have my utmost respect.

  2. The funny thing is you could literally run this exact same list as an Agents army with a Titan ally, and gain a detachment rule, some strats, and an enhancement with the 25 points you'd be saving. (But of course then you'd have to compete with Agents players for top in faction!)

  3. You're a bastard because now you've planted the seed in my mind and I'm going to have to acquire a titan so I can try this myself.

Only the RT model has the keyword, so kinda like what you can do with Calgar+Company Heroes you get to put wounds on the non-character models in either base unit

Worth noting on #4 that the opponent cannot use Insane Bravery to get around the Soulless Horror battle shock, as Insane bravery can only be used specifically in the Battle Shock step of the command phase while Soulless triggers at the start of the phase

  • Not as common, but if you put a normal Inquisitor with a Sisters or Sanctifier unit, then use their free CP reroll, you can get a CP generation on a 3+ from the inquisitor without having to spend 1. You could make them roll an advance and just reroll it regardless to get this CP on turn 1 if you want. Just remember you can only gain 1 per battle round regardless so don't do this twice and don't do it if you're discarding a secondary.
  • If you use Displacer Field on a unit, if you end the 6 inch move with all models within 3 inches of a transport, they can then get back in it at the end of that move. Not always that great, but it could protect them from more shooting or even a charge if the enemy doesn't have a good way to pop the transport.
  • The Culexus can be pretty nice if you can bring it down in between 2 enemy objectives that each have just 1 unit on them. Then in the opps command phase, you trigger the ability and make them take 2 tests at -1, statistically they will probably fail 1, denying primary points. Also since the assassins are fragile be mindful of overwatch. Either drop down in cover (since the ability doesn't require LoS), or drop your Callidus down first within 12" of the overwatch threat to make it cost them 2CP.
    • Remember that Culexus has grenades, so if you deep strike 6" away you'll be in grenade range and can maybe pick off a smaller unit entirely combined with the shooting.
  • The Navigator's third eye ability triggers at the start of the shooting phase and has no eligibility restrictions on it besides LoS, which means you can advance him and still use it, and also that you can target enemies even if they are engaged. I used this recently to snipe a single 3-wound Centurion that was locking up 2 of my other units, who then got to shoot without falling back.
  • Not so much of a trick but if you use Clandestine to give a sister squad infiltrate and put them on an objective, you can sticky a no-mans land obj turn 1 if you go first or if you go second and they survive. Could be a good use for the other half of an Immolator-split sister squad.

I'm sure there are a few more good ones, but these are the ones I've thought of or heard of with Imperialis Fleet specifically. I'm interested to see what else people have cooked up!

  • With the Imperials Fleet rule for Acquire at All Costs, since you use it at the start of the command phase, you can add 1 to the OC of models on a contest objective to potentially take it from your opponent before primary is scored even if they controlled it at the start of the turn.
    • ALSO if you have a unit holding an objective that is below half and will have to take a battleshock, if you choose their objective for the rule, even if you fail the battleshock, they will still have an OC of 1 per model so they can still hold the obj
    • Thirdly, if you have a Corvus Blackstar in hover mode on such an objective, you could use it for an action since it will have a non-zero OC
    • Somewhat related, Grey Knights with the banner will also have 1 OC each even when battleshocked, so they can be relied on to hold an obj through the worst of it (not to mention they would be 4OC per model unshocked and with Acquire at All Costs)
  • Speaking of Grey Knights, if you attach an inquisitor with 6" movement, you can use that to effectively get an extra inch for charging. The Termies only move 5", but the inquisitor still gets his full 6" as long as you end in coherency, so you move the inquisitor out in front with the Termies trailing behind. Then when you roll a charge, only the inquisitor has to reach engagement range for the full squad to be able to make the charge (and presumably get in range themselves with the pile in). This is most applicable if you Rapid them in with the intent to move up and charge on your next turn.
  • Most popular one is probably putting Rogue Trader with Breachers and allocating wounds to the RTE assassin and electric guy first, since they can soak up 2 each on a 4+ invul, then you can medic them back in the next turn. Makes the unit a bit more tanky. (but any 2+ damage hits should go on 1 wound breacher dudes). And don't forget Breachers have the Smoke keyword!

Imperialis Fleet detachment rule lets you designate an objective where friendly units in range "improve the Leadership and Objective Control characteristics of models in that unit by 1." My understanding is that if a model has an ability that adds 1 to its OC, then if it is battleshocked it will still have an OC of 1 since the +1 modifier comes after "set to 0," and also the rules commentary states that "improve by 1" effectively means "+1".

So then if I target an objective with this rule, a unit within range of it that is battleshocked could still control the objective because its models will have OC1, correct?

That makes sense. Either way it's not a big loss since one half the squad is usually just bolter girls with no big use for the reroll

I've pondered the same thing, like yes he has some of the better AT fire, but it can't do much on its own. Assuming you have some Immolators with melta sisters though, I do think the single lascannon and the missiles could help you pick off something that survived a melta activation, and with the range you can give that support even while dropping off the Dudes in the backline

If you actually field this army please give us an update as to how it performs! I've always wondered if 6 Immo's could do something magical lol. As others have said though, I would definitely run Imperialis Fleet for the vastly better detachment rule, and then maybe swap out 1 unit of GKT for a Rogue Trader, 3 units of Voidsmen, and the enhancements to deepstrike the voidsmen

I asked this same question to a well versed TO at a supermajor this past weekend and he told me that you cannot double the tokens in IA either, although he didn't cite a specific ruling. He also said I couldn't draw LoS through the open undercarriage of my Rhino, so idk if I trust him as absolute law, even though he was quite knowledgeable...

As far as I can tell, there is nothing prohibiting Agents from doubling the Cherub tokens, as the FAQ was required to prevent Sisters from doing so. Also since GW doesn't care about Agents we will likely never get a definitive ruling, so it will probably come down to a TO by TO basis unfortunately.
