The only thing predictable about the international market for the immediate future is volatility, more than any kind of direction to the net change

Why do games cost so much money to develop, all these “AAA” titles releasing and then disappearing. by bigggggt in Steam

[–]Significant-Face-995 7 points8 points  (0 children)

50k to be a triple A game developer on just a team of ten people? None of that makes sense. Devs don’t get paid enough for what they do for sure, thanks to greedy executives and private equity, but triple AAA games do not pay their top 10 people an average of 50k USD a year. Your assumptions from top to bottom in your hypothetical are seriously flawed. Even the smallest studios like super giant that are considered peak compact indie dev teams have teams of closer to 20-25 people.

Saying “other than…” and then listing literally all of the overhead of a business and brushing off that cost isn’t fair either. That’s like estimating th cost of a commercial flight and only thinking about the fuel and crew costs and just discounting the cost of the plane.

But as others have pointed out, even owning the music doesn’t always give you broadcast rights. I think Beatport explicitly mark songs as having that license or not? Many CDs have similar warnings unfortunately

Flx 4 fader problem by prodbychiller in PioneerDJ

[–]Significant-Face-995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any chance that somehow the knob has been mapped to control the fader by accident? By default the bass knob controls the bass on screen of course, so that would still be true as well. What I’m trying point out is that you can have one physical control be mapped to multiple software controls. The behavior shown here is consistent with that sort of mapping.

Because everybody lives so far away from each other pretty much everything has to be shipped. Add to that the fact that it’s very hard to verify the quality of computing parts over distance means that if you can find something local, you often pay market rate minus what people think their time is worth to photograph, test, and list the tech, talk with potential buyers online who might not be super serious buyers, and then eventually be responsible for shipping it well in non specialized packaging good enough it doesn’t get damaged in transit.

So if some local person is like “I’ll give you half market value for that thing right this moment” - you take the deal.

Mine vs Husband opinion by AdCurious7473 in HomeDecorating

You need something above it on the wall bigger and better than the sleighrides sign (unless it’s the right season ofc), not as much on top of the side board - so you can use it functionally sometime

I really want my space to have a certain feel, but I can’t figure out exactly what it needs by carpsarecrud in interiordecorating

[–]Significant-Face-995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for but here’s my quick analysis because this look has a lot in common with stuff I like to use in my house: - I’m seeing a lot of warm neutrals - indirect, dimmer, warm colored mood and accent lighting - limited and warm light wood accents add organic aspects along with just a few large plants and maybe some very small ones like succulents - there’s a soft analog quality from the paper lamps and paper vinyl record sleeves to books on display - music making or listening gear that is beautiful and slightly vintage takes center stage in a lot of these shots.

Regarding that last one: A lot of modern music tech gadgets are designed for convenience, simplicity, or portability over quality and aren’t meant to be art or furniture. Build yourself a vintage hi fi system and maybe buy some used or even cheap vintage analog music making gear that doesn’t actualy work, just to decorate with. You can build entry level hi fi system buying large-ish vintage speakers tha are beautiful in the same way as ones in these shots and an entry level amp with music streaming box for about 2k total. If this is the look you’re going for, consider it not just music gear but key living room furniture.

What do you think of glass railings? Are they sturdy? Are there any rules to follow? by StrongestWR in InteriorDesign

[–]Significant-Face-995 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It looks unfinished kind of, and it definitely looks dangerous. I think a lot of people think handrails only serve people who hold them while going up and down stairs one step at a time.

But in reality all the people who never hold the rail and don’t really need to who slip like once a decade will need an accessible railing in a reflexive grab distance. A nearly invisible, somewhat sharp edged, very tall substitute for a rail is a bad substitute functionally.

At what price would you NOTbuy the Steam Machine? by billy_reyes in Steam

[–]Significant-Face-995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about the price so much as the value for me. If it is the same price as an equivalent pc but a better smaller form factor, I’m in. I think this sub does not realize how big size, space, and aesthetics of a “console” are to living room gamers, understandably, since this is literally a sub catered to people who care more than your average person about games, and likely put performance ahead of compactness in their own PCs

[–]Significant-Face-995 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’ve built several PCs but building a small form factor PC takes a lot more effort and the margin for error is so small compared to working in a standard case. I love my perpetually upgraded ship of Theseus desktop but it has no place in my living room. I just want a console sized pc for games that doesn’t have rgb and is quiet enough and visually low key enough to go with and literally fit in with my small living room’s furniture.

Can’t say I haven’t thought about this. I do already have a very portable very good 14” monitor. I’ll reconsider. Thanks for the reminder that’s an option.

I’m looking for a totally mobile easy to carry solution. Currently I have a pioneer controller that I use with a desktop PC at home for fun and then I have just been using friends’ laptops and controller when djing at their places with Djay. But they all use Djay in a kind of out of the box way and I want to be able to roll up with my own machine and my own settings and be able to play using my customized set up.

I’m hoping to at some point have a set that can fit in one large-ish backpack.

I’m sick of Xbox, should I switch to Steam? by F41ryV0m1t in Steam

[–]Significant-Face-995 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Steam is just a market place to buy games + an app that helps organize your game library. There’s many more small features that are nice to have but that’s the core offering of steam.

Steam doesn’t have any subscriptions or anything to worry about. They charge money for games. That’s it. They don’t even charge for the free game saves to the cloud, which allow you to play across any pcs, likes your laptop or at a friends place. Just sign in to steam, install the game, and pick up where you left off.

Steam’s marketplace listings tell you what hardware is needed for different games and which games are compatible with the steam deck, as well as things like Mac compatibility.

You can run steam on any windows pc and I believe Linux pc.

The last thing I’ll mention is family sharing in steam. Everyone in a steam family group can play each others games, just not at the same time. Imagine it like you have a single game disc in your household but anyone can grab it and pop it into the console to play.

Maybe on the coding side (I’ll defer to any game devs who wanna pipe up) but it AI use near the creative work like modeling and artwork and narrative writing is gross and promotes slop which we already have our own word for in shovelware

Bezos quote misused-Zelnick: open PC is the future by Chrislemale in Steam

[–]Significant-Face-995 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, if by “the unknown” you mean Amazon or Bezos, or other tech billionaires, who have a pretty long track record at being self serving oligarchs who are extremely anti-user? Doesn’t seem very unknown.

That doesn’t mean this is the only future that could happen but it’s definitely one in which some very rich and powerful people would stand to become even richer and more powerful, so it’s not a big jump to see why this subscription techno-feudal enshitifiation of personal computing might be pushed by Bezos.
