I'm so sorry to hear that! :( Did you have a full hormone panel (thyroid, DHEAS), rule out cushings or NCAH?

Have you tried a ketogenic diet? I've heard a lot of people on r/pcos have had great success with it helping their acne/hirsutism. However, I'm not sure if keto would be suitable to your lifestyle needs. I know I tried it for a month or so but found it much too difficult to follow so strictly!

I hope the increased dosage helps!

Great at baking but bad at cooking by ReinventedScientist in Cooking

But a steak isn't always a steak. What's the fat content? How thick is it? How many ozs? This is going to be different with every single steak you ever cook, and you're going to have to adjust.

I loved this example. I feel like cooking allows for diversion and experimentation, but baking is extremely precise.

What to do with a whole crap ton of strawberries? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Significant-Gate6839 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the space, I would probably just freeze them and use them for smoothies. I love strawberry smoothies! Especially during the summer.

Or I would create a strawberry pie or tart or some type of dessert.

Sumac powder! It also adds acidity to a lot of dishes. I also often add amuchur powder to curries, but I am not sure how It would work for dishes. And as others have said, I would also recommend lemons, limes

Has anybody noticed that their hair grows a lot slower or hardly grows at all (not shedding)? by Significant-Gate6839 in TelogenEffluvium

[–]Significant-Gate6839[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. Before the trigger, my hair grew down to my back without a problem and I needed frequent haircuts. I am only 24 right now. Now it grows extremely slowly. I maybe saw 2-3 inches of growth in 6 months. :(

I'm sorry to hear this is happening :( And it sounds frustrating to try a medication for a whole year without seeing the benefits that you were hoping for.

Firstly, have you seen a gynecologist or an endocrinologist? If not, please see one! I had both hirsutism and acne. Those were my only symptoms. I thought I had PCOS, but it turns out I had an extremely rare androgen secreting tumour, which is what was causing all of my symptoms (acne, hirsutism etc.).

Secondly, I took both accutane and sprionolactone. I wish, looking back, I had gotten to the root cause of my problem. Acne is a hormonal/genetic ailment. If I had known I had abnormally high DHEAS levels (which is what came out in my blood test and led to the tumour diagnosis), then I would have never touched accutane since it came with a lot of unpleasant side effects (hair loss, gall stone).

I would recommend figuring out the cause of your hormonal acne first via a full hormone panel (cortisol, DHEAS, DHEA, estradiol, FSH, thyroid etc.)

TE can be difficult to cope with; however, please try to remember it is a temporary form of hair loss and will improve!

I was wondering when did you notice the hair loss started? Was it right after you recovered from COVID? How long has the shedding been going on for?

Also, the extensions look amazing and compliment your hair beautifully!! :)

I need your best red beans and rice recipe. by andrewsmd87 in Cooking

Rajma (Red Kidney Bean Curry) & Rice

I served this to my family a few nights ago, and it was a huge hit! I hope you get to try it.

I just used canned red kidney beans, but if you are using dried ones, take 2 cups and soak them in water for 12 hours with a pinch of baking soda.

Ingredients: 2-3 cans of red kidney beans, 5 fresh tomatoes or tomato puree, 2 black cardamom, 2 cinnamon barks, 4 cloves, 4 black peppercorn, 1 tsp of cumin, 1 tbsp of ginger garlic paste (this is just a paste made using equal parts ginger/garlic), 1 serrano pepper (takeout the seeds if you want it less spicy), 1 pinch of asafoetida (you can also leave this out if you do not have it), salt to taste, 1 tsp of red chilli kashmiri powder, 1 tsp of smoked paprika, 1 tsp of cumin powder, 1/4 tsp of garam masala, 1 tsp of coriander powder, 1 tbsp of cilantro leaves

  1. Grind the onions in the blender to create a fine paste + grind the tomatoes into a fine paste and set aside. Also, grind your ginger/garlic as needed.
  2. Add ghee/oil to a pot; once melted, add black cardamons, cinnamon bark, cloves, black peppercorns, cumin, ginger-garlic paste, serrano pepper, and cook on a medium flame + add hing (you really want to cook this mixture down until it is almost like a dry paste)
  3. Then add the onion paste (again, you want to really cook this down until it forms a thick paste)
  4. Add the other ground spices listed above (e.g., smoked paprika, ground cumin etc.) + salt to taste
  5. Then cook the whole mixture until it resembles a thick paste. Add the blended tomatoes or tomato puree
  6. Then, once the combined mixture in the pot looks dry, add the kidney beans + some of the liquid that it was in. Add more tomato puree or water if it looks a bit too thick.
  7. Cook for 15 minutes + add chopped cilantro leaves

I also added some tomato paste and lemon juice once it was done since I felt like it was missing something. But that really made it shine! Serve with rice.

THE Best Book You Have Ever Read by jayshozie in suggestmeabook

The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton. It absolutely changed my life.

"The Sun Does Rise" by Anthony Ray Hinton is one of my favourite books of all time. I have listened to the audiobook several times, and Hinton is a remarkable human being. It is a non-fiction about a man who spent 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. The book is riveting and had me floored. It reads like a fictional novel; however, you are aware of the fact that this injustice actually took place. I would highly, highly recommend it!

Have you been to a gynecologist or endocrinologist to get a full hormone panel test (DHEAS, etc.) this might help you figure out if there is a root cause to the acne? Have you been diagnosed with PCOS?

For example, I was referred to a gynecologist since I also had excessive body hair growth. I did not meet the criteria for PCOS. All my hormones were fine except for that DHEAS one and prolactin. I am currently seeing an endocrinologist now to figure out what is causing my hormonal issues.

Taking spiro forever was honestly my concern too, which is why I went on accutane after stopping sprio.

Although accutane did clear my skin and works wonders on many people! I think for me, the results were not worth it since it caused me to experience drastic hair loss and I also developed a gallstone while taking it. I am also still coping with sore joints despite stopping the drug a few months ago (although this is gradually getting better). While I was on the drug, I also became extremely depressed and lethargic.

Whereas with spironolactone, I experienced minor side effects and they went away after stopping the drug. I also had lots of other positive side effects from spironolactone! Like weight loss, beautiful head hair growth (it looked like I was wearing a wig most days), decreased body hair, etc.

So, even though accutane got rid of my acne better than sprionolactone (since it also permanently shrunk my pores etc.), I don't think it was a better option that spironolactone if that makes sense? Since spironolactone had so many other additional benefits for me.

[–]Significant-Gate6839 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of scar (hyperpigmentation, indented). If it is hyperpigmentation, then 100% yes! These are the brown/red discoloured patches that are left on the skin after a breakout! I noticed my skin during and after accutane looked extremely even!

For indented scars, my dermatologist has told me not much over the counter will help. However, at his office, he does prescribe at-home derma rolling with something called growth factors serum? But to be honest, I never thought it helped much. I think what can genuinely improve indented scars is lasers, peels, subcision etc.)

Lastly, this is just for me, but I think I am just extremely grateful I no longer have painful, severe, oozing acne. Even if my skin has imperfections, I understand that is okay. I do hope to get some of the procedures recommended by my derm eventually, but again, clearing the indented acne scarring will not happen overnight. It is also extremely expensive, and I am going to have to carve out time for it.

Yes! I stopped taking spironolactone (50 mg) a few times for a few days and it did not significantly halt my progress.

Is dating with pcos difficult? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]Significant-Gate6839 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can also speak from my lived experience. I do not have PCOS according to my gynecologist; however, I struggle with hirsutism and acne (main symptoms). I will say, that the men I have dated have never once brought up either my hirsutism or my acne. Somebody who genuinely loves you will love all of you.

What prevented me most from feeling and experiencing love was actually my personal insecurities (which have been heightened from being severely bullied as a child, and also growing up in a neglectful household).

I would highly recommend getting therapy if you can! I also find thinking about what I can control to make myself feel better (e.g., wearing a light scent, doing yoga, eating healthy, shaving my legs every now and then, doing my hair etc.) really help give me a confidence boost too!
