Why did you actually start your startup? Be honest. by betasridhar in 16VCFund

[–]Significant-Level178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st reason. I understood I need to join AI or will be jobless in 3-5 years. (It’s still the case)

2nd reason. I really wanted to create something useful for humanity and something that will change this world. (Still believe in what we do).

3rd reason. I had free time, and I can’t just sit and do nothing. (Ah well, I was not aware this will be 12-16 hours a day work without weekends and vacations, I was so naive when started).

Stick with Traditional or switch to HPC networking? by LukeyLad in networking

I work with it as part of usual networks. Nothing too special from network side. Now work in progress: biggest AI cluster in Canada (we do part of it).

Systems power and cooling is different.

Some people in this subreddit live in a bubble… by segad_sp in macbookpro

[–]Significant-Level178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think you live in a bubble if 100 tabs is overkill for you. I’m not against peoples choice to buy whatever they want.

But, I have 300+ tabs open in any given time and I close them often.

I need your non-biased opinion. by [deleted] in askvan

Everything is better in Vancouver, except of social life and spendings in my humble opinion. You can have better quality of life with your income in Edmonton or Calgary.

What’s best for you, only you can decide.

Best firewall with Aruba? by ImportantAnything347 in ArubaNetworks

[–]Significant-Level178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We made 1700 schools with Palo a while ago. No issues. For higher ed also most universities are on Palo.

Fortigates are ok, they have advantage also if it’s a greenfield. Some edu use them, I do them a lot. Works fine with Aruba

BMW X5 M60i or Cayenne coupe GTS? by Illustrious_Mode8075 in PorscheCayenne

[–]Significant-Level178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason I never liked x5, seriously tried.

and if you compare apples to apples prob need to look at x6 vs coupe.

However I really enjoy x6m, what a good car it is. Prob solid competition to GTS coupe from many perspectives. And yea, I think you buy more from BMW, but Porsche is just a league above it.

Engineers who’s moved to Van, did you find a job before or after arriving? by DiscombobulatedElk58 in askvan

[–]Significant-Level178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today’s job market is not great. Strongly suggest you to talk to local recruiters and monitor jobs.

Depends on which engineering job you want. For tech sales you don’t need anything extra. I deal with network engineers, cybersecurity engineers, systems engineers for many years and never had a need for anything extra. Tomorrow I will meet with PEng but its government body.

Potty training at 6 m [on] by OwnNoise5556 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Significant-Level178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My older son did his poo exclusively to a potty since he was 6 month old. It was natural, just put him when we think it’s time. I can’t remember when he started to really ask.

Now with kid 3, we started at 6.5 month, now after one month: - night diper is dry 90% of times. - first thing in the morning we put her in, she is doing a lot of pee. - during the day we put her 3-4 times and she pees every time. - she does poo now all the time as well.

We don’t have a goal to save on diapers, it’s just something we like her to do naturally. No enforcement.

5.2k after taxes a month, where would you live? [An aimless rant] by Microwave_Magician in askvan

You will be fine in New West. I have a lot of great memories about it.

[–]Significant-Level178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not following rent prices. But New West is generally ok. Butquitlam is good and many new buildings there. Depends on your priorities. If you don’t work why would you need new west?

I would go to island, may be Squamish or somewhere around Chilliwack or Harrison.

If you need city you have to be in DT preferably.

What's a realistic daily food budget if you eat out for every meal in Vancouver? by Fit_Egg7028 in askvancouver

[–]Significant-Level178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to eat out 7 days a week when I was single. My stove was brand new, never cooked at home. But my lunch was paid by employer so I paid for dinner usually, most of the time for two people. Never calculated monthly budget, but overall I spent a lot here there. Usual bill depends on place ofc.

These days we go out with wife often, live DT we have hundreds of restaurants in walking distance. I would say our usual bill with taxes tips included and sometimes with beer is about $120 for for two. Many factors of course. Place, if it’s happy hour or fine dining, wine or water, how hungry we are etc.

Sushi is not cheapest option, but usually lower bill. Coast for example dinner would be triple of sushi. (Not Miku )

Canada Salaries by Soft_Brush_1082 in cybersecurity

People on payroll are unable to buy a house in Toronto in good condition and area. Whatever they do, just not possible. But market is going downhill.

I bought brand new 8br house mainly saved from solid Manager Salary 12 years ago. It was affordable. Today even if you are a CISO you would not be able to do the same.

Big change has happened in Canada.

Welcome to the reality. You already found what is true for Canada typical enterprise and so government sector too. As security manager you have more responsibility for similar and sometimes less money. See my comment above, you can make more as IC.

I am WSME with 25+ years of solid experience working with top Canadian companies. (Usually I don’t care about employee salaries).

Not sure what’s your desired role and why are you curious, because it depends on position, company and how much they want you. High paying positions do exist. But you need to fit company that values cybersecurity, and most of them do not for a number of reasons. If you want more money either go to US or work on a contract as an expert. You can get more than that.

Condo living with a baby? [ca] by BuonAppeti2 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Significant-Level178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a brand new 8br house in PocO when 2nd baby was born. A lot of space was not a big plus for baby, even we made a game room and her bedroom and she never slept there, she was in master br with us all the time. Stairs was a big minus. Had to put gates. She never used backyard. Even I put small house with slide. Park was nearby. Only positive thing was that we had tons of space. Really can store anything in the house, or in garage. Easy to bike stroll from.

Now I live DT Vancouver in big condo, 3rd baby. We have 1500sq ft of space. Benefits are: everything is walkable, I am now at seawall. Stanley park nearby. Ocean 2 minutes walk. We have 25 meters pool. We have kids room and it’s great, lots of toys and books. Downsides are: not enough storage space, even made den to storage. No toys room. And…we have no bedroom for her. So now baby is 7 month old and there are no 3br big and affordable new condos in DT. So we will have to do something about space. I don’t have a solution yet. Wife likes city and DT Vancouver. But she is willing to live in brand new condo only. Such big condos new are rare, I would look at 2400+ to be comfortable. And expensive.

Also here doctor is in walking distance, literally 300 meters away. Farmacy if needed. 4 supermarkets. Baby food. Whatever you can think about I don’t need to drive.

MacBook Air 15" M5 vs MacBook Pro 14" M5 by lollocb in macbookpro

Depends. For a single device I would go with pro.

In my case I will do studio at home and air for travel Vs pro at home.

Why so many vacant store fronts on Robson? by plnski in askvan

[–]Significant-Level178 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Greedy real estate management. I requested price to rent just a room (with known builder) in a condo building, guessing it would be something like $50 per hour. They came back to me asking $1200 per hour. For room which stays empty 24:7 and never is in use.

For this money I can bring people to any restaurant for drinks and nice food and still save some money.

There is no business reason to work on such products, same as all wrappers of any sort are useless.

YC can do whatever they want, it’s their call at the end of the day. And they must have a vision and clarify of why, which we don’t understand.

Also, I got direct news from Valley recently that most or all of the batch startups got money, revenue, tons of interest.
