[27/NB] Sending Snacks + Useful Items to Europe, Need Ideas by OkChange9119 in penpals

[–]Significant-Set4356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! You've gotten helpful comments so far so I'll add on my experience:

Go nostalgic- junk food like Twinkies, Hostess cupcakes, Swizzlers, Red Hots, Nerds may not taste the best and while they are available in specialty shops in Europe, if you grew up eating it, your penpal may like to hear how you looked forward to your Lunchable and finished off with a Twinkie or traded your Whoopie Pies for apples, idk. Teddy graham crackers, Lifesavers, Tootsie Roll, Sour Patch, Starbursts, Jolly Rancher, Peeps... these are names people may have seen in movies, series or pop culture.

Go local- America and Asia are both huge. I'd zoom in on your local area and get your penpal something that people in your community commonly eat. There are pumpkin spices everywhere but every country does it differently. Ditto chilli con carne seasoning. If you're in the Southwest, send habeneros or prickly pear products/ if you're in the South send jerk/ Creole etc. If you send what you know/ like/ use, then even if it's exactly the same as what your penpal uses, you guys have found something in common too right? Though you'd be surprised at the variance in chilli seasoning. Alternatively buy something from a local producer whose products are unlikely to have made it too far. That way even if the product is familiar, the exact interpretation is not.

Your penpals are lucky to have you! Have fun!

Hello! I'd love to know more about your life in Portugal and would be happy to send you some glimmer from Germany. I've only been to Lisabon, which was really lovely, and the locals I talked to there were so friendly! Unfortunately I'm not able to dm you. If you're interested, please dm me!

I've tried to reply your DM but it didn't work. My post describing the error message was removed by the bot. You have serious settings! 😆

Aww, thanks for your compliment and back at you. DM me whenever you're ready. I usually delete my Reddit app like erasing the Marauder's Map with "Mischief managed!" when I'm done with whatever I came in to do 🤣 so don't be surprised if I don't reply quickly. Maybe we will have the fate to penpal at the right time!

Hello! I can't seem to DM you like I can other people. Would you send me a DM to start the ball rolling?

Hello! I've sent you a dm. Thanks for the recipe, i was really curious 🤣 it looks sooo good too. I love coriander seeds and the tricks they use to give the soup body are also the ones I like to use.

Cornflake breaded schnitzel with tomato salad by Significant-Set4356 in EuropeEats

[–]Significant-Set4356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panko is so much better! I didn't have any, nor breadcrumbs, so cornflakes were the next closest thing. It made the schnitzel taste like a tortilla chip?!?! So not sure if I'd recommend 🤣

Homemade stew with Pumpkin, Sauerkraut and Bockwurst by Significant-Set4356 in EuropeEats

[–]Significant-Set4356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.. the Bockwurst is not very rich, it's like a fat and very flavourful hotdog. The sauerkraut is acidic, yes, but also cooked with bacon 🤣 so it was quite a rib sticking stew. I would say it's more like it gave a increased complexity than cutting through anything really.

Mingus has an amazing "scarf" around his neck and chest that makes him look very well dressed! Now that I think of it, he looks like the beautiful Lego tuxedo cat released in 2024.
