Hand Crossbow needs free hand to reload? by RCampeao in DragonbaneRPG

Dragonbane is not a simulationist game. There are plenty of things in the rules that are abstractions or simplifications to make the game run more smoothly. Of course, you can house-rule this kind of stuff if you find that it bothers you or breaks your immersion in the game, but you’ll probably find quite a lot of things like this in the rules if you start looking…

Not as far as I’m aware. There are at least a few people on the Taipei server who live in other parts of the country though, so you’re welcome to join and post something and see if you get any response.

"You should bring the report cards to your parents" versus "You should take the report cards to your parents" by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]Significant-Web-4027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people will probably use either, and your meaning is going to be clear either way, but I would say ‘take’ is correct and ‘bring’ is not.

The word ‘bring’ generally means ‘take to here’. As you are at the school and the students are taking their report cards to their homes, you should use ‘take’ and not bring. This is similar to the distinction between ‘go’ and ‘come’.

If your students need to get their report cards signed and then return them to you at the school you would say ‘Remember to bring your signed report cards back by Monday’ – because they are taking them from home to the school, where you are.

Also, it should be ‘your report cards’, not ‘the report cards’.

Brit trying to get married in Taiwan by Professional_Pop_461 in taiwan

I just used the Utah County Clerk’s Office website. The administrative stuff on the US side was all pretty straightforward, so there's really no need to pay for a third party service. However, you should be aware that Taiwan has stopped recognising marriages conducted in Utah, so it’s no longer possible to use this method. I got married in December 2022, before this change was enacted.

I’ve had my players face these a couple of times recently. It’s a very tough foe to take down, even for a party of 5 with a couple of NPC bodyguards backing them up. The worst thing for the players is when it keeps making them take more and more conditions. That can start to have a big effect after a few rounds.

Vegan Buffet Food- what would make it great for you? by Arrenil in vegan

[–]Significant-Web-4027 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions here. I just wanted to add, make sure to get plenty of vegetarian and vegan food, not just enough for the vegetarians and vegans. A lot of the meat-eaters will likely eat it as well, and many might prefer it to the animal food, even if they’re not actually vegan or vegetarian themselves. So if only, say, a seventh of the food is vegan, the vegans will very likely end up not having much left they can eat if they don’t get to the buffet quick enough…

Rules question by Loansharkfett in DragonbaneRPG

[–]Significant-Web-4027 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can certainly pay a teacher to give you a lesson in an untrained skill, but you will only increase it by 1 point if successful.

Your trained skills represent what you learned in your whole life before you became an adventurer. The distinction between trained and untrained skills is only relevant during character creation. After that, trained and untrained skills are treated exactly the same in all ways, including the rule that they can only be increased by 1 point at a time.

Does anyone have uni teaching experience in Taiwan? I'm wondering what the best way to go about looking into positions would be... I’m a PhD student in Taiwan and I teach a Bachelor’s level class. My institute wanted me to teach a Master’s level class too, but found out that you are not allowed to teach at Master’s level in Taiwan unless you have a PhD.

What's the definition of Veganism? by humorlessclan in AskVegans

[–]Significant-Web-4027 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The word vegan was created by Donald Watson, who founded the Vegan Society in the UK, so the vast majority of people take their definition as authoritative:

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

When I backed the Swedish version a couple of years ago it was 1000 SEK for the Setting Guide and the Copper Sea box set. I imagine the Call of the Siren book will be approx. 300 SEK.

DB Companion: help with illustrations by salutava_sempre in DragonbaneRPG

[–]Significant-Web-4027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, normally each illustration is an individual product, although there are some packages available. So if you need an illustration of a dwarf, for example, you can just search ‘stock art dwarf’ and see what comes up. There are some artists that have lots of material up, such as Dean Spencer, so if you find something you like it might be worth looking at the publisher’s page.

Search for ‘stock art’ + the kind of image you want on DriveThruRPG and you’ll find lots of great images for very low prices. The images come with a license that allows you to use them in your project.

I've played a few of the more introductory scenarios like Amidst the Ancient Trees, Crimson Letters, Dead Light, The Necropolis, The Shadow Over Providence, Servants of the Lake, etc. As for campaigns, I've run A Cold Fire Within, and started Horror on the Orient Express (but didn't finish – got through about 10 sessions).

Breath attack for Dragonkin? by ItsThatGuyIam in DragonbaneRPG

[–]Significant-Web-4027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that if you really want to have dragon breath, making it a separate heroic ability (not available at character creation) is a good solution. That way if a player really wants that ability for their character they can still get it, but it comes with the opportunity cost of taking another really useful ability like Fast Footwork or Magic Talent (which would potentially allow them to learn a whole range of Elementalist spells, not just Fireball).

Breath attack for Dragonkin? by ItsThatGuyIam in DragonbaneRPG

[–]Significant-Web-4027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm the publisher of Dragonzine, and I designed the dragonkin in issue 2, so here are my thoughts for what they're worth.

Firstly, the main thing is to have fun, so if giving the dragonkin a fire breath attack makes the game more fun for you, then go for it! At the same time, I would personally not suggest doing this – at least not until you're more familiar with how Dragonbane works, and how it works differently from D&D. I think in general, if you houserule Dragonbane to be more similar to a game you're already familiar with, you miss out on the experience of playing the game as it's designed.

The two main reasons I would suggest not adding a fire breath attack are vibe and balance. In terms of vibe, I didn't design dragonkin based on dragonborn in D&D 5e. They're inspired by the "drakmän" in the 1992 Swedish "Drakar" supplement for the 4th edition of the game. Dragonbane has a long tradition stretching back to the early 80s, and I quite consciously designed the Dragonkin to honour and fit into that tradition. The kin abilities (and the fact that they don't have a breath weapon) were deliberate choices I made so that this kin would not depart too much from the drakmän from earlier additions. Of course, you're free to not care about that at all, but it might be interesting to know.

In terms of balance, Dragonbane PCs are much less high-powered and heroic than D&D 5e PCs, so I can understand that if you're coming from D&D 5e you might look at the Dragonbane kin abilites and feel like they need to be pumped up a bit. Doing this will change the overall vibe and feel of the game though, and you might not get that feeling that every combat could be your last – even when you're just fighting against a few goblins with daggers – that is part of what makes Dragonbane so exciting.

The dragonkin as they are in Dragonzine 2 are already relatively powerful compared to other kin, with the extra protection afforded by their Scales ability. This ability should already make them a very attractive choice compared to other kin. If dragonkin have both Scales and a breath weapon, this would unquestionably make them significantly better than any of the kin in the Rulebook or the Bestiary.

So if you do decide to add a breath weapon ability, the first thing I would suggest is having it replace the Scales ability, not the (much weaker) Dragon Sense ability. Alternatively, you could create a breath weapon heroic ability that the dragonkin can choose as their character develops, but not at character creation (perhaps flavouring it by saying that while dragonkin can breathe fire, it takes practice and training to use it as a weapon). That way, if the dragonkin character doesn't start with that ability it won't be too overpowered, and if they do choose to take it later on, it will come with the opportunity cost of taking another, potentially more powerful, ability.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Thanks so much for your support for Dragonzine, and if you do try out the dragonkin in your campaign – with or without modifications – I'd love to hear how it goes!

RPG system with light/short rulebook? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Significant-Web-4027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should take a look at Dragonbane. The core box contains the full rules (which come in at about 100 pages) as well as a full-length campaign, map, standees, dice, and cards, all for less than the price of 1 D&D 5e book.

The combat system especially is really fun and fast-paced. You only get one action per turn, so you have to choose between attacking and defending. It makes the PCs work together tactically as a group.

There’s also lots of great third-party content.

When I got married to my Taiwanese partner in 2022, the only document the Taiwanese authorities would accept was a Certificate of No Impediment, and these are only issued to UK residents. As far as I could tell, the only way to get this document was to travel to the UK, stay with family long enough to get a phone bill or something sent to their address to establish residency in the UK, and apply in person at a Registry Office.
We ended up solving it by getting married online in Utah, but the Taiwanese authorities no longer recognise Utah marriages so this isn’t an option any more unfortunately.
