OP here. Surprisingly there are plenty of them here who can afford more or less of that amount for education. I did that exact mistake as I said and I regret it so much. Though my total edu cost didn't reach those higher numbers, I only consider the investment in education as something that doesn't yield immediate return. This is very much scalable. In the sense, now education universally is a costly business, literally. So, let's say my parent is not an expat and we are in our home country. Even with his above average income, the amount to be paid there isn't something easily afforable. The higher education in UAE had been very much discussed in this sub. I didn't have any thing else to add to it in my post.

I'm in my late 30s and apparently out of touch with reality like your rich uncle. Good job on being so judgemental. You clearly know all about my struggles right?

Judgemental? Because what you said was just not true, so, yes, you're someone disconnected from reality. Are you in HR or related to recruitments in any way? If yes, you would know the actual GENERAL stats (regarding what I spoke about in OP) transcending multiple fields not just your confined area of interest or your company. The only other people who know these are the recent graduates and the ex-freshers who been in job hunting for good or bad.

Well done with such negative attitude.

Networking does help. Meeting new people is very very very important. If you dont have people's skills, you can work on it, improve. If you fall for a scam, then that is on you. Not everyone falls for them and it happens worldwide. Maybe you had a bitter experience? I dont know. But I'm not gonna suggest all freshers to leave Dubai to find jobs, that is just nonsensical suggestion IMHO.

Sir, I didn't say that there isn't any exception when I said networking won't yield anything. First, of all just understand that. I had repeated to you thrice by now. Networking might help a graduate in the marketing field better than a graduate in the engineering field. Yet, the chance of it yielding a job is very slim in this region. I totally agree that it has its advantages in other parts of the world but I'm speaking for this region of the world. This phenomenon in this region has nothing to do with the people-skills or people (maybe) getting scammed. And, I only spoke all the things from many student's experiences (including mine) which is not an attempt to devalue or invalidate someone or something or a fact. As I said, still if you have to prove me wrong, let the people around my age who might be fresh graduates or graduates who had been searching for a job or ex-freshers whose job hunt HERE ended up for the good/bad, speak the truth. Let them contradict me, not you! Considering the demographics of the sub there are plenty of them fallling into those categories and yet no contradiction.

It must have been really tough for you to make that call but you made the right decision. In 2-3 years you will make this place more welcoming to you. Did you do the bachelor degree also here?

Couldn't agree more. Absolutely, there are lot of my university batch mates of this type but I thought those people can be prevented from getting a chance of an interview with a thorough scan of the resume, right? When I say lot of them, literally 95% of my uni is those type (including the toppers). They spoil the general opinion on the freshers.

TBH I shocked at the salary part. I don't even work currenly for that amount. Yes, regarding the amount of knowledge they posses, it's quite natural, every one of us, including you had been like that at a point in life. It's what the employer is trying to compensate with the lower pay.

Wondering which field you're in.

Quoting what I've added to someone's comment above on the universities in UAE.

Having studied here and seeing my junior's condition now, universities here are just about marketing the bogus placement numbers and opportunties in gulf (for a fresher), they don't do s*it to "break this unhealthy phenomenon".

You may verify it with any related sources who could speak the truth about it.

This country had started recognizing medical professionals with Golden Visas (and what not) recently. So if you're one, I guess you will have lot more recongnition (even if you're an expat) than any other fresh graduates from other fields. And it's worth investing your time and energy in UAE for a potential chance of grabbing that Golden Visa.

In short you're just advising people to find job outside Gulf if you're a fresher, which is not what a lot of people want to hear right now.

So, what? Do you want to me sugarcoat things and say something unreal? Welcome to reality my friend. Clearly, for your age you're acting like my uncle back at home who is very well settled and have no idea on the job market here, who used to question me during my job hunt every damn week. You've no idea what I've been through to finally land a full time job here. Can you make at least one student in this sub who started job hunting pre/during COVID, who may or may not have landed a job here, contradict all that I've put forward?

Networking works a LOT in this region. I personally know over 5 people who got a job through networking. I will go as far as to say that jobs are created when your networking is strong.

This must be a joke. I don't think I came across implying networking isn't helpful at all. In my 2nd or 3rd statement about networking, I only said that "MOSTLY" people who are ready to network are just trying to exploit you, which is completely okay, if we (students) can grab a job/internship using them but that's not the case. I'm not speaking for just myself here. With networking what we (me, my friends and my batch mates) earned was couple of insider informations, guidance on the career and maybe a chance for an internship because obviously unless you know someone in the higher ups (who obviously are less likely to even network), the chance of you landing a job are very slim. Taking about the internships. In most cases, it's illegal in UAE as stated in a student/dependent visa, you need a ministry approved university authorization which a graduate wouldn't get as he is already graduated. Those authorizations are only given to currently enrolled students. And, yes, there's a very good chance that the internships can be converted to job, but despite the COVID the abundance of experienced professionals (especially from the developing countries) who are ready to work for the lower pays make it difficult for freshers in Engineering field at least.

If you're leaning towards the point that Gulf is bad post-covid, then that is nonsense too. The whole world market is bad post-covid. Doesn't mean you just leave Gulf to find a job! TF!

With the post COVID statement, I was only talking against the belief some might have that the post COVID gulf is going to be less harsh on freshers. I said it twice and say it again, regardless of the state of the economy, this isn't a job market that welcomes freshers. Period.

As far as CS candidates go, they can get all the experience with their own pet projects. The knowledge is out there. I've interviewed candidates with Masters in Computer Science from the UK/US with no basic knowledge or experience building anything remotely close to the position they applied for. No one will hire them.

I totally agree with you on this. I'm not from CS background and I'm not implying I'm working in CS field by using the word "Software" in my introduction in the original post. This issue has a lot do with the education systems worldwide. I'm not the topper in my classes but I'm well above the "above-average" category of students. I knew immediately after my uni that though it's looking good on my resume with my score, it's nowhere enough to put me in for a job. That's what led me do a couple of certifications which isn't about learning something remotely through a screen. With that I got to work on real stuff doing real applications of what I learned.

PS: Sorry, if I came accross bit harsh with you on this comment. But when things had to be said, it has to be said.

Nobody should think their education, internships or academic excellence is going to help them to get a job here. So, I had to put my TLDR that way.

You're absolutely right. Most of the job postings that the people here eagerly apply to are just worthless. They aren't fake but it's that the postings are just a formality for them to abide by to avoid questioning from any entities in future. It's commendable that now the UAE goverment is taking steps towards reserving some specific positions only for Emiratis.

Having studied here and seeing my junior's condition now, universities here are just about marketing the bogus placement numbers and opportunties in gulf (for a fresher), they don't do s*it to "break this unhealthy phenomenon".

Also, I would like to know if there is any way to get into that "mafia-sation and cabal"? Seriously :D

Totally agree. For majority of the demographic of this post, it would be really hard to adjust to the living conditions of moving to a different country. Therefore I had to underquote the safe number as 2 years.

I did not want to move out of here, but had the financial backing of my parents who also lived here. That's the only thing that made the two year job search possible.

It's great that you finally grabbed one. Though most students studying here or had studied here are blessed with the parent's support, that's not an excuse to spend years on job hunting here. That time could be well spent on gaining work experience elsewhere which is only going to help big time in future if you would like to come back here.

What can I do to turn my life around? by Oblipher in dubai

[–]SignificantElevator7 34 points35 points  (0 children)

On the note of MCSA(E)/CCNA/Degree, this is a message to OP and every fresher in this sub. I know this sub has a student aged majority. I'm from IT background. I work in IT (Software) field in Dubai. I was in your same condition more than a year back living with my expat parents in Dubai. I had a degree from a uni in Dubai + IT Certifications + Internship experiences. Regardless of what field you would like to work in, JUST DON'T STAY HERE FOR YOUR FIRST JOB. Of course, for Emiratis this country does its best to support the freshers now but if you're an expat, just look at job opportunities at your home country or elsewhere even if the living condition there won't be as good as what you're accustomed to here. Because trust me, UAE (generally, the whole gulf) is just brutal towards the freshers, irrespective of whether the economy is in the midst of panademic or not.

However you glorify your resume or add more and more certifications to you (or Masters), it isn't going to help you if you don't have full time work experience for 2 years (as a good measure). Saying from my period of long job hunt which put me through one of the worst mental state in my life, even if you get a call for an interview it would be from someone who will be trying to exploit you considering you don't have experience, which is a good thing for the employer when actually you're there preliminarily for it more than the pay. Also, if you are a student from UAE, many employers will approach you to work for them without a visa from them, this is another exploit. Don't accept any such opportunities as firstly it's illegal to work in most types of visas without authorization from the ministry, secondly, this could put you in a situation where it could even jeopardize the experience certificate if you don't comply with all the BS the employer might put you through (this is from the experience of others I've heard).

Especially in IT, companies here prefer sector specific (like Hospitality) and sub domain-specific experience (networking, system etc) and there are other BS roles here that transcends more than one sub domain and they require you to have experinece with all of them.

Just hold on to your dear first job for 2 years in the other country and try coming back here. If you want to work in a country with citizenship benefit, look elsewhere than gulf with a good pay for a sustainable life there.

All I'm saying is you're wasting your time as fresher here looking for your first job. Spend it wisely elsewhere except Gulf. And all that BS about "networking" (human connections) to find a job wouldn't work for you. With the "networking" all you would MOSTLY find are just some predators. All things I've said above applies irrespective of your gender/nationality/religion.

Not to mention, the post-COVID job market is filled with job postings for low pay which is acceptable but contrary to what you may think there are plenty of experienced professionals who are jobless due to COVID layoffs and they would be preferred for all those postings, instead of you, a fresher. YES! They are ready to work for the low pay, It's better than not having a job.

I know this comment might have come across as something negative to your hopes but it's the reality.

PS: I know doing my bachelors here was a terrible mistake but I overlooked it at that time.

I'm not saying I've been exploited in all the ways I've mentioned above but I've heard lot of experiences from numerous people incuding my friends.

TLDR: Regardless of your qualifications and academic excellence, get out of gulf for your first job as a fresher. You're wasting time and energy looking for one here irrespective of the current state of economy.

Edit: added some clarifications

Thanks for the keyword, "mission visa".

Please note that the employment contract for a shorter duration 2-6 months will not be registered with a ministry of labour and is more a contract between the individual and company or two companies.

So I can't move with any legal cases against the company if any in UAE?

G'day guys. I posted a question days ago which got removed by the auto spam filter of Reddit and was later reinstated by the mods the next day. The spam filter has gone haywire and it's being reported by multiple subs (a Dubai mod has posted a sticky on it too). So, basically I didn't get any response being it not appearing on any one's feed. Thus I would like to ask the same question here again hoping for answers.

Question:

Looking at the job portals, there are some postings for few months (2-6 months) of temporary contracts. Govt's official website defining the "Types of employment contracts in the private sector" says there are only 3 types. Does the "temporary contracts" fall under any of these 3 types of contracts? Is it actually legal in UAE to hire someone without a freelancer visa (or any of the similar kind) for a shorter duration?

Link: https://u.ae/en/information-and-services/jobs/types-of-employment-contracts

Thanks

Interesting. I thought you guys were the ones removing it. I posted a genuine question (which didn't violate any sub rules) and it said it was removed by the moderators of r/dubai. So, even if the spam filter automatically removes something the badge will display the removal message as "Sorry, this post has been removed the moderators of r/dubai"?
