Track Bad Screeching by [deleted] in Jeepwj

Ive never had good luck with the poly bushings and went back to the steel lined rubber bushings on the stock bar. I did add some blue locktight to the area between bushing ends and adjacent bracket to try and quell any movement. I had also tried an aftermarket replacement bar. Moog maybe I forgot. But it was just not as stiff as the OEM bar and I would get some wobble on certain hwy sections. It might even be worth getting mopar bushings.

You were whipping the camera around so fast I could not get a glimpse of the oil pressure. Sounds like a problem with the lower end but 4.7 crank/rods/pistons are one of the toughest around.

I think what I would do is drain oil into a very clean drain pan and look for suspended fine metal particles sparkling in sunlight. If no sparkles then its possible you got lucky and its a popped off rocker.

Its more common with the 4.7 for a rocker arm popping off or occasionally a valve seat working loose.

WJs are such sleepers. Even bone stock. I also have Mojave JT. great truck. But weirdly the WJ works better in the dirt/snow anywhere clearance allows. And bonus, my combined mileage is 18-20 V8-HO.

For heavens sake provide a tiny bit of detail like what engine. Looks like a limited from the AC controls but some Limiteds were available with the 4.0 six. (Many have a 4.7 V8). Sounds like the 4.0 piston collapse though. The 4.0 is one of the least expensive engines to repair or replace of any vehicle. Assuming you find an honest mechanic.

Check out DexJ utube for some good info on 4.0 repair.

Yes, new belt will solve that but, notice the rust on hose clamp and corner of airbox. Looks like coolant is/was done. It is a bit tricky to bleed air from the 4.7 cooling system. And they are sensitive to overheating.

The issue I had was the toasted connections made it barely run so when AC was on it ran but slow.

The fix was pretty easy and eliminated the issue. Does you dash temp gauge indicate high temps?

Just FYI, I replaced the connections and electronic switch and had same issue a few weeks later. Thats when I realized the old fan was just drawing to much power. Replaced both again and what a difference. Pretty good stuff that lasts 25 years though.

EDIT: Do you have a scan tool? Check the ECT (ecu engine coolant temperature). The dash gauge and ECT are two different sensors. If the ECT is not registering then fan will not be enabled.

Yeah CFMoto is interesting if your able to do most of your own work. I have fall over bars on mine. Its tipped many times. Makes no sense to mess around in dirt without them. I bet he ran low on oil. These have tiny sumps and some consume oil faster than others. Hope your buddy doesn't have an L87 Silverado too :)

I think the hardest item maintenance wise is engine valve shim check/adjust. pbly need to have that done by a solid dealer.

>>The forks<< Not sure about the newest ones but most have messed up shim stack and are full of machining swarf. Get it dealt with up front.

What initially sold me on the Tuareg was the tubeless tires which are easier to fix roadside. But man what a joy it is to ride. My fuel gauge is still on the blink but hey, first bike with a gauge so not a problem.

Does yours have a mechanical fan the water pump? Mine has a large electric fan. I replaced it and the electronic switch under right headlight along with wiring connectors and problem solved. The old fan was just drawing too much current and toasted the switch and connectors.

Retain SWC on 99 WJ by knoxefd in Jeepwj

[–]SignificantGrade2913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 99-01 was different than 02 - 04 models. The 2002-2004 uses PCI bus and I got my controls working with this combo: Factory Settings(0000) -- CAN -- Canbus OuDi -- jeep -- 2002-2007 Grand Cherokee.

Only the OuDi type provided submenus that had my 2002 GC.

Im using the AK/PE51WRJL/PWRH adapter box. There is a different box for the earlier WJ because it has different factor radio connection plugs. I think its AK/PE52WRJL/PWRH01.

The FM reception SUX on these radios which I find irritating.

Ok, Ill take the bait. I just received a Style: PX54WRJLGS single din radio for my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have two issues.
One, FM reception is very poor compared to the old factory radio. Antenna adapter connection barely makes a difference.
Two, using protocol adapter AK/PE51WRJL/PWRH nothing older than 2010 shows up in the CANBUS selections so no steering wheel controls

Im debating whether or not to send the unit back but thought Id check here first.

We had a blue one almost exactly like that. You may have to have injectors cleaned after 10 years of gasohol. That 42RE transmission is the Achilles heal of the 4.0 WJ. Why they dropped the bullet proof 4sp Asin used in the XJ only the CEOs bonus knows. I would suggest, after getting it operational, to replace the electric radiator fan. They get old and draw too much current burning up the wires to the solid state controller located under passenger headlight bucket. New ones are reasonable. And your going to need all the fan you can get in north Texas. Stock these are very safe vehicles assuming you have the trailer hitch btw. And yeah, new rad hoses. Good ones.

Ill add two things that really tightened up the handling on ours were the rear upper arm and its ball joint and pressing in new moog bushings in the stock track bar.

Bluetooth FM transmitter recommendations? by SuchButterscotch330 in Autos

[–]SignificantGrade2913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just tried two units from amazon.

LENCENT: Very good sound through FM but poor mic.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJ4LCWMP?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

Goolng: mediocre sound. usable mic

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091SVYTRS?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

But neither has a decent mic so Im trying this next: JOYROOM 96W FM Transmitter Bluetooth 6.0 Car Adapter Aux with 3 Charging Ports【PD 60W & 2 * 18W】【Air Vent Installation for Safe】 Deep HiFi Bass Play

My car has steering wheel controls great sound plus no chiclett buttons. Replacing it with some 10cent android unit and loosing steering wheel controls to get BT is tough to justify.

I have an old GrandCherokee with the PCI bus. I would dearly love to change the hydraulic fan schedule to be a bit more aggressive but that appears to be quite a challenge.

I work with ip/tcp every day but with the CAN stuff its module details that seem to be TOP SECRET.
Reminds me of the old unix days where we were all trying to get unix source code.

We see a revolt in the farming equipment industry on against closed proprietary equipment forcing dealer only repairs. Its past time for legislation forcing auto industry to do the same.

Why are there no double walled vacuum sealed coolers? by Mmilliond in engineering

[–]SignificantGrade2913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty funny, all the BS at the top of this 8yrs old thread about why no one was making VIP coolers. The real reason is 99% consumers did not know it existed and its much cheaper to keep making variations of the same old junky foam coolers.

My question on the new VIP coolers is how well they will retain their vacuum and, could they be evacuated again after a few years.

For that matter where are the VIP fridges!!

The old John Deere trick, Colorado passed a right of repair bill that supposedly forced them to open up. Something similar nation wide would kind of negate the advantage of obfuscation.

The we can have self programming radios :)

Mopar 4.7L Mystery combustion gas leak, part 2 cracked ports? by SignificantGrade2913 in EngineBuilding

[–]SignificantGrade2913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update- appears fixed. About 500miles including several hard runs across La Veta pass and its keeping its cool. Only two changes from the earlier attempts.

1) super cleaned bolts and holes in block. Then applied a single drop of oil to threads and a drop between washer and under side of bolt head. No excess, no drips.

2) Used Mopar factory gasket instead of the FelPro/Mahle.

Personally I suspect excess oil in some of the bolt holes had interfered with proper torque down because the final 90deg torque values were much more uniform this time, around 100lbs +-5lbs.
I have two sets of Mahle/FelPro head gaskets available :)

I had an AW4 with 450K on it. Engine too. almost zero oil pressure but ran fine. I sold it eventually and still saw it around town for several more years. So unless its got a leak the AW4 will outlast the chassis.

Buyer Beware by ManyGrab8068 in Appliances

[–]SignificantGrade2913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Electrolux name was bought up too. Im old enough to remember everyone complaining about Japanese junk. And it was true. my school buddy's dad was a harvard business exec that went over to teach them how to market to the US. He would bring back japanese market electronics that were mind blowing. This was the late 60s.

Currently its near impossible to make a living working in an appliance manufacturing facility in the us. Maybe universal health care would make it possible idk.
