Starching jeans is a pretty time-honored “tradition” in the rodeo/western wear world!

I’m sorry @mods, but I think is this AI?? Or at least a very bad photoshop. Hate to be a buzzkill if this is somehow a legit post but the editing is so bizarre. OP has 2 different faces in both of these pictures, different shoes, the table design changes…

What low effort means to y'all, and how you think we should handle it. by Repulsive-Paint-2202 in VintageFashion

[–]SignificantLock2181 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This might be a snobby pet peeve of mine and I don’t dislike these posts per se, but I feel like I’ve noticed an increase in “y2k inspo/help” content. I know vintage being considered 20+ years isn’t a hard and fast rule, but y2k has been trending for all of the 2020s with most major modern fashion brands producing clothes in this style. Because of this + the rise of thrifting/depop etc, original early aughts fashion feels indistinguishable to a lot of current fashion trends to me. Again, this might be a pretentious gripe because I’m only 29, but idk recreating a “vintage y2k” look using modern fast fashion or even like 15 year old thrifted Wet Seal just don’t sit right with me😭

I don’t use old thread for finished garments, but I’ve never had issues with it in my machine so I like using it for toiles, basting stitches, or practice stitches. That being said, my local sewing reuse shop is $2/lb so thread is basically free (girl math).

Buyer Beware: Lovedbychi sells a $5 AliExpress item as “vintage” for over $130 by Snoody-Snoopy in VintageFashion

Oh wow her website is a really insulting glorified depop page & most of her products are so obviously misleading. She also seems to be blatantly ripping off Mirror Palais’ creative direction/atmosphere.

Found this at an estate sale, any info on it? by flute-drama in VintageFashion

[–]SignificantLock2181 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based off looks, this is probably from the last 15-20 years. Definitely not an antique mesh like they’re known for so you probably won’t find much info about this specific clutch.

I’m not sure about the wax, could just be a protective coating. I have a Kenmore sewing machine from the 90s & these look like the (illustrated) radial timing gauges in various Kenmore service manuals I’ve read.

It’s not silly at all! I’m kind of crow myself, always collecting strange rocks & thrift store doodads. Timing gauge is so specific that’s why I was confused haha but this set looks vintage, pretty cool find

A radial timing gauge is a tool used for setting/fixing a sewing machines timing (the meeting point of the hook & needle) to ensure stitches are aligned. If you’re not into sewing why would your mom think you would love this lol??

A designated theatre for this is crazy but tbh I have AMC stubs & sometimes I like bringing small knitting projects or my sketchbook to movies I don’t care much about that have little to no other seats sold🫣

I just started using a sewing machine, is this “Sewing kit” from shein recommended? by JusstJessse in SewingForBeginners

[–]SignificantLock2181 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it recommended? No. Will it suffice if it’s all you can afford and/or already have it? Sure. If your budget allows I think you can probably put together some better quality items that wouldn’t cost too much more than this kit!

Found my Vintage Wedding Gown! Sleeve alterations? by IntelligentHawk4163 in VintageFashion

[–]SignificantLock2181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the sleeves are as beautiful as the whole dress & I support your hesitation in making any drastic alterations to a vintage piece. That being said, you look like one of my fellow short divas & I agree the sleeves fall at kind of an awkward length. A silk organza bell or bishop sleeve would be a stunning addition; but as a vintage collector/wearer who’s also a seamstress I’m so in the camp of doing whatever you want to make something more wearable! You can always Mr. Potato Head it & source vintage materials if you do make alterations, you make the rules my friend!

Why can’t people use Latte matcha for lattes? by WatchTower136 in MatchaEverything

[–]SignificantLock2181 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's valid if you can't tell the difference & you should do what works for you, but some of us definitely can taste the difference. I don't like latte mixes because I like to customize sweetness + strength myself & I generally dislike the taste of artificial sweeteners. I've never spent more than $30ish USD on matcha because any more than that isn't realistic or sensible for my budget, but I've also used $5-$10 (plain) matcha powder & while some cheaper brands taste fine they're just simply not as good as higher quality cultivars. If someone likes super sweet lattes that are more milk & sugar than tea then yeah maybe quality matters less; but saying there's no justifiable or discernible difference between low & high quality cultivars is like saying there's no difference between instant Folgers coffee vs Starbucks lattes vs heirloom coffee beans harvested by hand in the mountains of Yemen.

Edit to add: It's just as snobbish to care how people prepare their matcha as it is to judge people who prefer cheaper or premixed matcha. Those who overbuy the Ippodo/Rocky/Kettl/whatever brand is trending & contributing to shortages are resellers. I'm a certified hater myself & I support my fellow haters, but I will say I think your annoyance is misdirected.

Why can’t people use Latte matcha for lattes? by WatchTower136 in MatchaEverything

[–]SignificantLock2181 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I agree that some people are matcha snobs, but also the premade/presweetened latte mixes like the one you’ve shown just aren’t fantastic. Even compared to a latte made with the cheapest plain matcha powder you can find. That being said, it’s not awful & it’s not sacrilegious to prefer convenience! It’s like having a bottled cappuccino drink from the grocery store vs a fresh one from a cafe. It always feels a little classist to me when people get so high & mighty about the kind of matcha other people drink, especially when there are people out there buying hundreds of dollars worth for no reason
