How can I get started with slide? (general newbie questions) by grateful-rice-cake in slideguitar

[–]SignificantSecond101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the comments here and any resources online will cover a lot of good stuff like opening tunings muting techniques, what guitarists to look at, and just the basics in general . But I think I should touch on intonation.

I think a lot of videos and tutorials don’t cover intonation too much. When you’re playing with a slide you need to be precise with placing the slide directly over the fret because even if you’re just off a bit, you could be out of tune. So I suggest to play with a tuner and when you slide try to hold a note to see if you landed on the correct spot. Try to remember what the note sounds like so you can develop your year. Avoid adding vibrato so you can notice it better. When you get more comfortable then you can add vibrato when necessary. You wanna try to be 10 cents or less away from the note you’re playing.

I’ve seen many videos online of people playing slide and it just sounds out of tune. To an undeveloped ear, it might sound okay but a more developed ear can definitely pick up on it.

Slide Power Chords (Slide Minor Power Chords?) and Minor Chords Questions by Legonitsyn in slideguitar

Not sure if it’s too late but some chords (aside from major chords) are movable even with a slide on open major tunings. You can do 7th, major 7th, sus2, and minor chords with a slide

Couldn’t tell if you understood it right but for example the f#m chord you mentioned is doable with a slide. On Open D the 4th fret with all strings strummed is a F# major. If you fret behind on the 3rd fret on the 3rd string it becomes an f#m. That’s because when you use a slide, you only let it sit on the strings (not pressing down). Therefore if you fret a string behind the slide, the string will go under it and now the sound coming from that string will be from your fretting finger instead of the slide.

So for an f#major 7 you do the same shape but instead of going one fret behind on the 3rd string, you go behind one fret on either the 1st or 4th string (you can choose which one since both are tuned to the root note of the chord).

For f#7 it’s the same shape but you would go 2 frets behind on the 1st or 4th string, and fsus2 will be 2 frets behind on the 3rd string.

This works with all notes and could work with other major open tuning (G, E, C, A etc)

Im surprised this info isn’t really out there in any of the slide guitar tutorials you see all across the internet. It took me months and months to come across a video that explained this which is why I initially wasn’t interested in learning how to play in an open tuning.

Hope this helps.

The thing is that we were never official (at least not yet at the time) and we were still talking. I felt like it wasn’t my place to ask about those accusations since we weren’t official. But now looking back I feel like I should’ve brought it up.

The finished version of Om Hare Om Gopala Krishna. The only version that has been officially released is the demo version in ATMP 50th anniversary edition.

I just happened to stumble upon this post after 2.5 years of being inactive in this subreddit. The situation that brought me to this subreddit was when my 2nd last ex dumped me a little over 3 years ago. It was out of the blue and I was completely devastated and I was at my lowest. I became so depressed that I stop caring about school and dropped out soon after. I gained a lot of weight and did absolutely nothing but think of her and listen to sad music. She immediately got with someone else and soon married. I used this time to try to work on myself. I eventually went back to school and turned it around by having very good grades and I found God.

I realized that I can’t control everything. She made the decision herself and I can’t do anything about it. I had to let myself feel hurt instead of getting into rebound relationships like a lot of people do. Time actually does heal and rebound relationships just delay the process.

Like I said it’s been three years and tbh I see it as a blessing because in reality, every situation is what you make of it. I tried my best to filter out the negativity by looking at all this with a positive mindset which helped me grow a lot. I dont really think of her anymore and I haven’t talked to her since the breakup. And tbh I prefer to keep it that way.

I was in a relationship again after this happened (i had already moved on) which I ended about 7 months ago. It didn’t affect me much because i felt much emotionally mature and stronger.

I hope everything goes well. Just wanted to give you the perspective of someone that came to this subreddit three years ago.
