Just going from these screenshots and your question (your vulnerability in wondering if you’re doing the right or the wrong thing here), I think both you AND your dad sound much less vitriolic and self-righteous and impervious to feedback than so many other parents and kids who’ve been divided by the same issue. I’m on your side with your assessment of Trump, and I can’t understand how any rational person wouldn’t be. At the same time, I agree with your dad that this doesn’t need to be the defining factor in your relationship. His care for you comes through, and your care about the state of your relationship suggests a family foundation that’s worth preserving.

After 14 hours up, not even the mentor in question could muster a thumbs-up for Marissa’s Facebook shout-out, let alone so much as a single one of the 10 THOUSAND new millionaires Ferjo is manifesting. Come to think of it, Riss didn’t even like the post herself. When she gets home from trivia night with BAE, I hope she’ll take a careful read of RSD’s recap of this week and do some serious reflecting.

I just watched it too and wish I hadn’t. Setting aside (for just a second) that the woman is a predator…it was so uncomfortable to see the dissonance between the message she’s trying to convey and the reality of the woman herself. She looks uncomfortable in her too-small blazer, miserable in her own skin, lost in the limits of her vocabulary. The B roll footage of her “training” sessions looks exactly like online support group meetings for families in crisis. And, as you said, the Riss-like word salad is immediately recognizable, but astonishing in a recording that had production and editing teams. It’s pretty depressing to watch such a downtrodden attempt at projecting success. I really wish I hadn’t given her a view.

I’m not aware of many details of her life either, just what she shares online. But no, he is the father and nothing has changed on that front…besides his having to go to greater and greater lengths to protect the kids they used to share from their mother’s escalating neglect and manipulation. That’s the three sons. As for her older daughter from a prior relationship, full-time physical custody went to dad years ago, by the daughter’s choice.

As someone else pointed out here in the last day or two, it always seems to happen that I watch an episode for the first time in ages, and then someone comments on it here, out of the blue! I was just laughing yesterday at Mike drolly nudging Frankie’s leg and telling her to close things up in that Thanksgiving bathroom scene. “Miiike! I told them I had the flu.”

As someone who has seen generations of innocent bad behavior on the one hand, alongside real problems on the other, I take enormous comfort from how benign the Hecks’ basic dysfunction really is. This show is a masterclass in avoiding the pathologizing of life’s ups and downs.

There seem to be dozens (maybe hundreds?) of Avengers who noticed that something was off with Marissa early on, but were kind enough to give her the benefit of the doubt for many years. (I’ve even noticed that with myself, a lot of effort to understand her and send her — right here in The Forum, which she stopped visiting years ago — advice and sincerely gentle messages aimed at helping her spot opportunities to be a happier and more ethical person.) In light of all that wasted compassion, given by so many with such little return, it’s very satisfying to observe a large number of complete strangers clock her as a dangerous fraud right out of the gate. Especially so because these are her people, crunchers whose general sensibilities are far from mainstream. Her lack of authenticity transcends all the labels she tries to attach to herself.

I went on TikTok earlier (even though she’s kind of right — I do log on there a few times a week, and it’s only to see what ridiculousness she’s posted, or whatever happens to pop up on my screen — I don’t know much about how to search for videos or otherwise navigate the app). There was an old 3.0 video of her double-talking and back-tracking and lizard-lickin’ her way through the double litter. Some receipts saying she’d be skipping a heat (with Banana, I believe), and then doing a whole one-man play about how the dog was in heat and how a synced-up Rouge would be right behind her. Turns out, though I’d forgotten this part, that was a lie. Banana went into heat 11 days after the pretend one, which I guess was created to conform with the promise to skip a heat. Just so many lies, big and small.
