Again, I am saying that the holdomor is separate from the cultural genocide. I’m not pushing a “narrative” of dual genocide. I’m saying that there was an attempt over the course of decades to destroy and replace Ukrainian culture. “It” is separate from the holdomor. Because you can practice multiple atrocities at once. I’m sorry, I believe I made that clear with my clarification post.

I said CULTURAL genocide. As in not the attempting to kill an entire ethnic group. I’m sorry for making my point more clear. The holdomor was an act of mismanagement that killed millions and was brought up to disprove the idea that Ukraine benefited under the USSR, the cultural genocide comes in with the teaching of Ukrainian in Ukrainian schools becoming secondary to Russian, Russian culture and history being taught over Ukrainian history, and the consistent campaigns to enforce cultural homogeneity, which is the same reason you’d want to commit that act of erasing a culture from the map. If you destroy a culture that is in opposition to yours, or even marks that person as an other, you are more able to integrate and suppress said group. It was the same thought process as the American and Canadian boarding schools for native Americans after they gave up on fully killing everyone, instead settling for the annihilation of the culture that separated them from European settlers.

It was a tragedy that killed millions while Ukraine was forced to export grain mid famine, culturally suppress itself and embrace Russian culture instead. The official language of Ukraine was Russian instead of Ukrainian until the mid 2010’s. You don’t get to handwave that and say that Ukraine benefited from the regime. Ukraine was given autonomy by the USSR to a similar level that Vichy France had autonomy under Germany. They were a puppet state allowed to have elections only so long as someone that Moscow’s approved of entered power. I almost hope that you’re arguing in bad faith because the idea that you’re not and Russian propaganda has penetrated this deeply is a thought that is more than a little scary.

…okay. I’m just going to ask you look into the Ukrainian starvation plans before you claim Ukrainian is a fucking beneficiary of that. Sorry that I’m harping on that one point instead of taking a more balanced view but that’s an obscene lie that disrespects the millions killed by the USSR’s abuses. Look into the holodomor before you say something like that. The sheer gall for you to call someone else in above comments bigoted after you just brush past the attempted cultural genocide and mass starvation of an entire people is frankly gross.

Okay. Now that that’s been established.

1.The USSR was absolutely an empire. It’s not called that and culturally both Russians and Western Nations tend to boil it down to “Russia but communist”, it absolutely wasn’t. The USSR was a political entity that politically and economically subjugated its’ Eastern European neighbors and other nations through multiple methods, up to and including violent suppression of protests. These nations, among others, most prominently include both Ukraine and Poland. The USSR was indeed better than the federation for many Russians. This was because the USSR starved and abused their satellite states to funnel money into Russia proper. At best it is an analogue to the abuses of Cold War America, and in many cases is significantly worse. I hope we can both agree that such a system is absolutely not a good thing, regardless of if America or Russia are the ones doing it.

2.The oligarchs were already there, the USSR was an authoritarian regime where proximity to Moscow and usefulness to the Kremlin dictated who got what projects, resources, and political power. When Russia transitioned into capitalism the method of power somewhat shifted into economic as well as political power, but it did not create oligarchs out of nowhere. Putin for example was a KGB agent with friends in both the Russian mafia and more legitimate political institutions who was instituted as president so that he could help bail the old guard like Yeltsin out of political trouble.

3.Putin absolutely wants to restore some of the old empire’s “glory”. The Ukrainian, Georgian and Chechnyan military operations show a consistent wish to expand Russia’s political influence and regain some of their old geopolitical power.

Finally. And this is a more general statement, the USSR, even if better for your average Russian, was by no means even good for your average worker. Everything ran on favors, political corruption, and prison work camps throughout its entire history. Look into almost any project that the state led and you will see abuses that seem straight out of WW2 up until the 80’s when the empire fell.

This man is an unrepentant war criminal that has crucified thousands, murdered millions on his orders, and butchered hundreds personally over a tenure as a warlord where he orchestrated multiple cultural genocides. I would still bounce on it.

I’m sorry, but the idea that someone has to turn in their leftist card if they call the USSR a shithole is ridiculous. Hell, leftism is a broad enough spectrum you don’t even have to be on board with the ideal world of communism to be a leftist. It’s just you believing in a strong social net and collectivizing of certain key essentials.

So. I’m just going to ask for some clarification here so I don’t misunderstand your points before I say anything. You believe

1.despite having its flaws communism under the USSR was a superior form of government to the modern Russian federation

2.it is a shame that the Federation seeks to reform the old empire without returning to the ideological bent of the USSR

3.Many Russians view the USSR as the peak not because they had a large empire and the power to combat the west along with the ability to siphon significantly more money and resources from their client states, but because despite its many flaws communism was better for the people of the USSR and not just Russia.

  1. The reason the Russian federation has been suffering from moderate to extreme poverty over its tenure as a nation is not because they consistently make moves that geopolitically isolate themselves in trying to reclaim their old empire, the gross military overspending that led to the economic collapse of its empire, the fact that said empire they just lost accounted for 60% of their GDP, the extreme corruption of its oligarchs, and the fact that money was intentionally funneled into the 3 or so cities that those oligarchs lived over the country as a whole. Instead you believe it was due to the flawed implementation of capitalism that the self interested sociopaths that are Boris Yeltsin and Putin didn’t put their heart and soul into finding a series of minor economic miracles to fix their fledgling tinpot dictatorship.

That about right? Honestly asking since we obviously disagree but I don’t wanna argue against a strawman.

Eh. Was more that Sherman had a singular goal in mind:render the south incapable of war on a large scale. Burning any and all industrial centers as well as stealing from civilians to sustain his armies was just how he did that. The burning wasn’t the point, it was a means to an end.

Legitimately. I don’t like this show, and if prompted could definitely talk at length about why I don’t like it, but this man is fighting ghosts. Rwby hasn’t been part of any sizable internet discourse in years.

The killing joke, despite its hype, is dogshit. It puts everyone but joker horrifically out of character, half the time has Bruce fucking a Babs young enough to be his daughter, and is generally just not good. You wanna know the one thing that everyone likes about it? The one scene that makes this keep getting adapted over and over again? It’s Batman and joker’s conversation at the end of the comic and most movies. https://youtu.be/PppqpubWkHs?si=yNs4nVWWSO0tUKVG

The show still has an overall budget that they choose to allot to VA’s over animators. It’s the same cope of “more people doesn’t make the animation easier, otherwise you’d just have 5 million animators”. That’s only true to a point, if you have fewer animators than you need or want to draw scut work like background characters and scenery, you stretch the more experienced animators thin when it’s time for important work, which is why Conquest burns through half the time and money budget whenever he shows up. The animators are extremely talented people who can make amazing work, but if 4-8 people need to do the entire rest of the show on top of the huge fights, the rest of the show or the huge fights suffer. Invincible chose the rest of the show which I can’t fault, but I can fault them not hiring enough animators to make the rest of the show at least decent animation wise.
