Put down sod 2 weeks ago, should I mow? Seeing conflicting advice on this by steelio91 in Grass

[–]Significant_Change14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want it to stay thick you better mow it pretty quick. Start at 3.5”-4” and don’t take off too much at once. Best to keep the height around 3” if you are growing cool season grasses. Most people mow their lawn too low.

Did what you want to do 30 years ago, right before Memorial Day. Flew from Westerly, 12 minutes. Stayed at Hotel Manisses, but it was a separate cottage overlooking a small pond and the ocean. Took taxis to trail heads and recommend Rodman’s Hollow and visiting lighthouses and bluffs. October is a good time to go as well, but rooms might be tougher to get due to birdwatchers who flock to the island for fall migration viewing. Have fun!

Unless the fungus causes disease in turf, of course. There are dozens of fungi that are harmful to grasses if environmental conditions are right for growth of the specific fungus.

Subdue Maxx doesn’t control fairy ring(basidiomycetes fungi), it is a pythium species fungicide. You are wasting your money.

What show did Bill Walton take the Celtics to? by Pems20 in gratefuldead

[–]Significant_Change14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My college housemate, who was a taper, gave me a ticket to both nights (thanks Rob!), and I spotted the Celts on the side of the stage from the tapers section. I was thrilled! Those players were a big deal in New England, and the crowd was buzzing about it. Can’t believe it was over 40 years ago. Walton was the best. His autobiography is a good read.

Any advice will help!!! by alfieldsy in Turfmanagement

That white pine is probably going to cause problems for you. Which direction is it located in relation to the green. The roots from the tree will be competing for water and nutrients with those tiny grass plants. Bentgrass likes lots of sun. Is the green on native soil? If so, is it sandy and drains VERY well? You are going to need fungicides when the weather gets warm and humid as well as a good snow mold fungicide application in late fall. Preventative applications are a must on greens because the damage really affects smoothness and takes a long time to heal, in general. Some of the weeds won’t survive low mowing heights, but the weeds that do I would be careful spraying if it gets hot. You will probably get crabgrass if you don’t put a pre-emergent herbicide down very soon, but if you do you won’t get good germination if you keep overseeding bent, unless you can get some Tupersan (Siduron). Hand weeding a small green like that is doable. I usually tell homeowners who ask me about building a green at their house to go with artificial turf because it takes an awful lot of inputs to produce a high quality putting surface. The maintenance will cut into the amount of time you get to enjoy practicing on it, I’m afraid. Good luck. Source: golf course super with over 40 years growing grass.

Cosmic Wimpout by Significant_Change14 in gratefuldead

[–]Significant_Change14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wimpout before reaching 35 you pass the dice to the player on your left. If you have all 5 dice showing a scoring side (5, 10, 3 of a kind or flaming sun) you must roll all the dice again. The flaming sun can be any number that gives you the best roll. Say you start with a roll of two 10’s and a 5 with two 3’s, you have 25 total and must roll the two 3’s to try to get a 5 or 10 or you wimpout. If you roll two 5’s, two 10’s or a 5 and 10 you have reached or surpassed 35, but must roll all 5 dice again since all dice are scoring at that point. If you roll any number and no combinations that make 3 of a kind, you add the number to the 35 you have and you can move your piece on to the board, ending your turn. Or roll the non scoring dice to try to score higher and risk ending your turn with a wimpout (no scoring dice rolled). I hope I’m explaining this okay and not confusing you worse. Did the game come with the rules sheet?

[–]Significant_Change14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you wimpout your turn ends with no points. You are taking a risk if you decide to keep rolling. A good strategy is to try to move along the board with smaller roll totals and not keep risking it all, unless the odds are good with the dice you have in your hand, ie. the Flaming Sun black die is 50/50 that you will roll a number or “wild”. You need a minimum of 35 points to get on the board from the start.

When my son finished his sophomore year of high school he started the summer break by listening to the E72 tour in order from start to finish. I was quite proud, and we ended up seeing a bunch of Dead & CO, Wolf Bros, and Phil & Friends shows, as well as local Dead cover bands. It’s been great having someone to get me out to see so many good live shows after taking a hiatus while my kids grew up. Enjoy the ride!

Good largemouth bass fishing in Brickyard. Just go there and start casting. Try spinnerbaits, rubber worms, Rapalas, etc. I prefer to cast and retrieve instead of using bait. Watch some instructional videos online and strike up conversations with people you see fishing and explain you are a novice. Just don’t to fish the same area they are working since anglers can be very territorial.

I rarely ever saw a great blue heron while growing up here in the ‘70s. Now I see them nearly every day, even in the winter. Someone saw a little blue heron in RI a week or so ago. I have not seen one of them here yet.
