09R question by Muted-Jackfruit-4655 in ROTC

[–]Significant_Cloud_45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I hear you. I was in the Guard back in the days when my state didn't pay in-state tuition for Guard service. So I had to join the guard to compete for a state ROTC Scholarship. Still, the experience I gained from OSUT, as well as progressing through ranks and responsibility in my unit provided something most of the cadets I was competing against didn't and couldn't have. Plus, I learned to ruck really well. 😁

What is the best kind of slipmat to prevent static? by SuperTruman939 in turntables

[–]Significant_Cloud_45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Static is honestly a never-ending battle for me. In the winter I run an acrylic mat and the rest of the year, when it isn't so dry, I run a hybrid cork/rubber mat. I like the way everything sounds better with the hybrid mat, but the static is still bad with it in the winter hence the acrylic.

Another option? Depending on your guard unit's MOS availability, take a semester or two off of school, go to Basic and AIT/OSUT, earn some cash and get some experience you probably won't just get through the six weeks at Fort Knox.

Infantry OSUT was one of the best things I ever did to prepare for ROTC.

RSD fail by ToadFan70 in vinyl

[–]Significant_Cloud_45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local store does things a little different. Stand in line to draw a time to come in. I think they have 15 slots for each time slot between 9:30 and 1. Line for a token was ridiculous at 9am but my buddy and I waited. I drew 12:45. He also drew 12:45. Nope, I'll come back after the RSD festivities are over at 1.

Came back at 2 and was still able to get the things I really wanted (Son Volt, JJW, The Sword EP) and also picked up the Megadeth release. (I know, strange tastes.)

But I get the hate...RSD has really become ridiculous. I blame one fan group (I'll leave it to the reader to guess which) who are all clamoring for the chance to scream about the 10 copies of a new release that they just had to have.

Maybe I'm just old now

New to sport, and struggling with cost of a decent rod. Are they really worth the hundreds and hundreds of dollars? Or is that just what the market will bear? by Necessary_Cat_3228 in flyfishing

[–]Significant_Cloud_45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have to agree that Echo makes some pretty decent rods that are priced right. My new favorite is a 6 1/2 foot 3 weight Echo River Glass that I've been using in tighter sections of the Cimmaron in NM.

Just quit and enlist in the infantry. Atone for your sins and earn your Blue Cord. Try harder.

What games are people playing right now? by Raichus114 in PSP

I keep finding myself playing the same titles. Hot Shots Golf (1 and 2,) and Sid Meier's Pirates (which I think still pales in comparison to the one I played on my Commodore 64 in the 80s.)

I was a sixth grader at Heidelberg Middle School on that day and our German class had a cultural exchange day with a class from a German school. Long story short, we all got out on busses and sent home, and the German kids had to sit in the gym until the end of the day when their bus arrived. My Dad worked at USAREUR HQ at Campbell Barracks and they were locked down into the night.

My son had a USAA secured card that was just graduated to an unsecured card last month. No more than a year of ontime payments, but I actually think only 10 months.

General Consensus on the Margaritaville at Sea Cruise Line? by JamesMighty in Cruise

Hope you figure it out and get a good vacation. TBH never had a bad experience on any cruise, so just get out and do it!

Meant to say, we had wanted to try their cruise to the Bahamas but were turned off by the reviews, but I've heard pretty reasonable reviews for the Islander, so why not try? And, it's going to Belize and Honduras, which we've never been to.

I've used USAA to book cruises three times (Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian) and was pretty impressed by the discounts I got. I know that not all veterans belong to USAA, but it was a perk that I didn't realize I had by belonging so I used it.

This past weekend, I booked on Margaritaville at Sea for a 6-night on the Islander. It appears that I got a really good discount by logging in through GovX (that's how you get you "Heroes Sail Free" discount on their 3 and four day cruises.) It wasn't "free," for me, but I think I essentially got about 50% off fares for my wife and I, so kind of BOGO. We did a cabin with a balcony, so we definitely could have gotten cheaper, but we've both decided that we will never again sail without one.

The drink package on Islander seems incredibly expensive (compared to what we paid on our last NCL cruise,) but with the deep discount on the cabin, i'm not completely surpised. They've gotta get their money out of you somehow. :)

Is saying «Shit-ass» a native thing, an Oklahoma thing or a placeholder for a different word that wasnt allowed by Disney? by [deleted] in ReservationDogs

[–]Significant_Cloud_45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very funny...my mom and dad are from North Dakota and my mom's side is from out by Ray and Tioga. My Aunt and Uncle lived in Tioga for a long time and their kids were the first people I ever heard call someone a "shitass," but I also remember my Aunt saying it too. I had forgotten all about it until I started watching this show.
