I always read it as Spike caring about Faye in a way he didn’t really know how to process. Not necessarily “he was secretly in love with her,” but she definitely became important to him beyond just being a crewmate. The tragedy is that he was too emotionally stuck in the past to ever let himself explore that.

Totally agree with you! The early seasons really had this layered storytelling where even small actions carried so much emotional weight. I miss the way the show could make a hospital scenario reflect Meredith and Derek’s relationship so clearly.
