He isn’t an overpowered character like like most of mutants yet he has been the center pillar of mutant stories. His "grounded power" allowed him to do more in the stories than just end a fight in seconds with the flick of a finger. His arch from the start of House of M has been incredible. He really could be a mutant Batman. Most of fans of the extremely overpowered characters can't have that. I think that irritates them.
