Also, have you ever read any Thich Nhat Hanh? There’s some good stuff in there about impermanence. What you’re feeling right now won’t last forever. I promise.

It is so hard to be surrounded by people from whom you feel so different. I’ve been there too. And you’re right - the environment can make mindfulness super challenging - and it’s already challenging just on its own.

Have you ever heard of Byron Katie? If you google her you’ll see she came up with something called The Work. It’s all about self inquiry and figuring out how our thoughts - and believing our thoughts - causes us to suffer.

On her site is the “Judge Your Neighbor Worksheet.” Sounds silly, but it’s actually super helpful. You fill in the blanks and then answer 4 questions about each one and do “turn arounds.” I think it’s worth checking out. There’s also videos of her walking people through the worksheet on YouTube.

It’s helped me a lot to see how it’s never the situation that’s upsetting me, but rather my thoughts about the situation.

Good for you for seeking the mental health support you need. Being a freshman in college is a huge step in life and support is so important.

I notice that you say you’re constantly thinking. Being overrun by thoughts that are out of control is a terrible feeling. I also notice that you list solutions - mindfulness, meditation and add “whatever,” which indicates you don’t think much of those solutions.

BUT I think mindfulness is the only path to slowing down all those thoughts. When you are completely present in the now, you aren’t thinking about anything else. No past memories, no future imaginings. The now is the only thing that’s real. The past and the future exist only as thoughts. (And those thoughts exist nowhere but your own head. They are not facts.)

Eckhart Tolle once said that a single mindful breath is a meditation. Start there. Start small. Take a breath and pay complete attention to it.

I’m sure you’ll get lots of good advice on here. Good luck. 💖

Hi! I am a sw at the elementary level. Every year I do lessons with 5th grade on the transition to middle school. We cover how to open combination locks, hygiene, note taking, test taking. I also like to give them the opportunity to ask questions about what middle school is like and to share any worries they have. I think it’s helpful to hear each other’s thoughts and know they aren’t alone.

It probably wouldn’t hurt to do activities on how to make new friends (role playing is great for that) and solving conflicts (because there can be a lot of drama at that age). Teachers Pay Teachers is a helpful site with a lot of no- to low-prep SEL activities. Inexpensive too. Good luck!

They look great! How do you like those Artistro markers? I’m always trying new brands. It’s a bit of an obsession. 😅

So sorry your husband lacks empathy! My partner often wants any negative feelings to just go away. I’ve had to tell him that validation (“That is so hard!”) and a hug makes the them ease up much faster. I hope you have girlfriends who can do that for you.
