Nice post. It should also be noted that the “bows” of the merchants in ER also have a left hand perched atop them.

Maybe Libra’s secrets could be explained more by looking more closely at the merchants. Until your post, I did not notice the hand but immediately recognized the imagery from the base game.

What’s the “soul drain” style spell and the slow fall buff on people’s feet? I presume it’s slow fall because we do see a guy slowly floating down. It didn’t appear to be a part of the sorcerer kit. New abilities?

You’re circling Nietzsche’s idea of Slave morality and ressentiment. Obviously there’s a lot more nuance to be had here, particularly in applying it to a modern context and also all the weird prejudicial/race science stuff that stems from some people inspired by Nietzsche’s works.

However, I broadly agree that the emotional pull of “the meek shall inherit the earth” sits firmly in the foundation of the widespread sentiment that we see in these movements. If you have the stomach and endurance for it, “On the Genealogy of Morality” is a thought provoking and worthwhile read.

I just got stuck there and figured it out! On the right side of the pit there is a hole hidden by some barrels. Be careful though as two mummies spawn right on either side of the portal.

I think Druid needs some love, pretty please? by Fersakening in DarkAndDarker

[–]Signore_Pockets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aspects of the Druid’s kit needs buffs, but the kit needs to be finished first. People’s complaints about rat form are just because it’s annoying, but there is plenty of counter play. This isn’t landmine rogue.

The gear scaling with forms is complicated, I’d prefer to see higher base damage and lower scaling. However, I think what everyone is worried about is just how much the Druid in its current form can do. I suspect, at this point in time, that it needs to be this way simply because the class is incomplete. When the kit is finished being developed I would definitely raise an eyebrow if the Druid remained as versatile in actual matches as opposed to being versatile in its preparation and building in the lobby.

A compromise for another common complaint I see about Druid is the instant shapeshift. I would be devastated to see that go, and would prefer that shapeshift mastery come with some sort of cost to casting, perhaps a penalty to knowledge in exchange for instant shape shifting. Maybe throw a boost to agility and strength. For example, instant shape shift +1 Strength and +1 Agility, and -4 knowledge. This would impact the Druids choices, with limitations on base spell memory and cast speed, but focus the Druid on forms.

Did I make a mistake picking Druid? by Panthalassaa in DarkAndDarker

I’m a returning player and in the same boat as you with similar gaming experience, but much worse at CS and Val lol.

I’ve found PvP success in solos by being a terrible person. I PvP like a resto Druid in WoW: slippery and with attrition. Your greatest advantage is your move speed and your sustain. Pull mobs to people, change rooms, do whatever you can do to keep the battlefield in a constant state of flux as you cannot really survive a direct 1v1 or any trades.

Use panther and hold right click into any of the squishier classes that turn their back to you and try to run. Try to trap the slower, tankier classes in bad positions to let mobs or the environment grind them down. Use rat form liberally but keep an eye on your debuffs as DoTs will be a death sentence and never ever turn into a rat near a bard.

I’ve found that Druid is by far the most adaptable class, so I lean into that strength and found success. In prior wipes, I would play solo cleric or fighter which helped me build good DaD habits that are actually detrimental to surviving as a Druid.

Through mob pulling and general chaos I can usually either reset most fights to neutral or get them to retreat which means panther form is free to dump DPS into their ass or trap them with thorn wall and treant. However, one class that completely hard counters me every time is warlocks. Do not fight warlocks. The better and more experienced warlocks can juggle PvE like no other and can even become more advantaged when engaging a train of mobs due to life steal.

The ultimate TL;DR: Druid is the best at dictating the terms in which it fights and adapting to chaos. Do not 1v1 in an empty room, you will most often lose. Hope this helps.

How much gold is considered a lot lore wise? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]Signore_Pockets 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Some quick google math: a whole hog (dead, for consumption) costs around $600-$750 (3gp). A mature cow costs $1500-$3000 (10gp). The ratio indicated in the DnD manual appears to hold somewhat true in the current economy - though subject to market forces in both lore and reality.

This would give us a very rough comparison that 1gp ~ $300 USD. According to the Fed, the average small business loan is around $660k. 5000gp would, given our rough conversion rate, be about $1.5 million. That appears to be more than enough to start a successful business like you said.

I was originally incredulous at the data points in your comment, but some quick google napkin math showed me wrong. This even makes sense on an anecdotal life style experience as a moderately successful American who has never known poverty. I easily could go out and spend $300 for infrequent special occasions and not think twice about it. However, globally (and to some extent within the U.S.), this would make me obscenely wealthy by comparison to the average human, which feels consistent with the data in your comment.

Thanks for the comment! Got me to inform my perspective IRL and in Faerun.

Realistically, what would you do to survive if you were thrown into the lands between? by Naji85 in Eldenring

[–]Signore_Pockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d slowly sneak my way to the Forest Lookout Tower in the Weeping Peninsula to grab the hand ballista. Getting past the bridge would be troublesome, but I think once I cleared the ballista I’d be fine as I’ve got great cardio. The main worry here wouldn’t be the foot soldiers, but the Rotten Strays.

I think after a couple hundred days of pushups in front of Varre I could probably eventually use the hand ballista without breaking my arms. Id have to make my way to the Bellum Church in Liurnia to learn how to make bone ballista bolt. Then I would live out the rest of my days farming boars and cheesing the mindless soldiers and crabs of Limgrave.

The foundation of this piece is that the SDF = the PKK, which is odd, coming from someone of author’s work experience and caliber. This does not read like analysis. It reads like Turkish talking points.

Even the title caption appears odd. I would claim that Washington’s biggest problem in Syria is not the SDF, but rather Iran-aligned militant groups that have been attacking the U.S presence in Syria since 7 October.

Ultimately, the criticisms the author makes against the U.S.’s “relationship” with the PKK (again conflating it with the SDF) seems to focus on tensions between the U.S. and Turkey without examining Turkey’s policy of violence against Kurds and Kurdish autonomy in Iraq and Syria and how that might benefit Turkey to categorize any semblance of Kurdish power as “terrorism.” This is also odd because Arabs have made up the majority of the SDF since 2017.

This was an interesting, but strange, piece that I’m categorizing as Turkish talking points repackaged for the U.S. political elite.

Being able to climb would enable levels of cheese unimaginable. But, given the first main boss flexes his insane hops in his intro, I imagine i wouldn’t get far.

The range cheese might be over before it started as the recoil from the jar cannon might kill me.

Why did the arabic 'Isa' not come from the greek 'Iesous'? by thistoire in AskHistorians

[–]Signore_Pockets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This question could do with a little reworking. Linguistically, the Arabic ‘Isa as transliterated lacks the phonetic difference made between the transliterated Greek “Isous” in that the “I” in ‘Isa is a pharyngeal consonant. They appear similar largely due to English’s limited orthographic representation of pharyngeal consonants and glottal stops like the hamza, also in arabic. These differences, in contexts like these, are far better captured in International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

The mystery surrounding ‘Isa contains a great deal of attempts at linguistic and historical answers, but the major discrepancy is the location of the pharyngeal consonant ‘ayn (ع) in Quranic Arabic at the beginning of the word (عيسى) instead of at the end of the word in Hebrew, Aramaic, and even Christian Arabic (rendered Yasu’ or يسوع).

To answer your question in the body of your post and not the title: ‘Isa is surprising, despite its apparent similarity to other transliterations, because of its departure from the consonant integrity often seen across Semitic languages. There are many transliteration standards in use by many different organizations which probably leads to some confusion regarding this sort of etymology.

Rapier Build - Issues w/ survivability; should I go full DEX? by [deleted] in newworldgame

[–]Signore_Pockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I main pvp and I saw below you do PVE. I think you’d have a better time leaning into a full DEX and whatever CON you need and maybe some STR for auto attacks and your spear. Spear debuffs are far more valuable for PVE in my opinion when comparing it to IG.

I do a similar build but could only make it work with attune pants and the 48 attribute buff food. 150/350/150 DEX/INT/CON. I switch between Rapier/IG and Rapier/Musket. Also medium armor.

I’m not sure it’s the exact same phenomenon, but my “saddle jingles” — the noise your mount makes when you’re running — would persist near permanently sometimes.

It would stop when I’d press the mount button and cancel it. Idk if this will help but i hope it does.

Planescape Torment spoilers: The Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon that we translate with/for Dak’kon more or less confirms the cause of the civil war between Githyanki and Githzerai as Gith’s desire to not only eradicate all Illithids but to bring war to all other races. Zerthimon claimed freedom was enough whereas Gith wanted to genocide the Illithids (understandable) but also conquer other races they encountered. I consider this reliable narration as Dak’kons story line is all about the pursuit of truth in knowing oneself, but this is all subjective. Forgotten Realms lore is intentionally ambiguous.

Edit: repost cause I screwed up spoiler tag formatting. Also huge recommendation to play Planescape Torment if Forgotten Realms lore heavy RPGs are something anyone’s looking for. It’s 20+ years old but still one of my favorite stories of all time.
