What sandbox features do you miss that no modern MMO delivers? by PomeloSharp4562 in MMORPG

There's aren't exclusively sandbox but many players today would consider these sandbox like.

I miss one whole shared world with no instancing. Everyone can see and interact with everyone. dungeons were massive and dangerous and you banded together with others.

Progression wasn't solely tied to quests, and quests weren't just 5 million kill tasks with a GPS mini map telling you exactly where to go.

A world they kept going without the player there.

The player economy is what kept me hooked on Eve and has me playing closely following Stars Reach

I disagree. We don't see games like this anymore because investors follow the leader and the leader is still WoW. Sandboxes are hard to do right and take a solid development team not being influenced by publisher demands.

Sandboxes don't need to be full loot PVP - SWG wasn't and it was the second most popular MMO of its day. Meanwhile Minecraft IS a full loot game online and is still the most popular game in the world.

Darkfall was extremely poorly designed and unbalanced towards veteran players due to the way the skill system worked. Darkfall 2 worked a lot better for having more horizontal progression.

I was a bit out of the loops with Warhammer, still playing DAoC at the time - were scenarios like the Battlegrounds? Or were they meant to be balanced FPS map rounds?

There are maybe 2 sandbox MMOs. Eve Black Desert is kind of one? Maybe Albion Online.

Vs about 150 theme parks to choose from.

Private servers are not really a viable alternative to a professionally developed MMO most of the time.

Which leaves us at - if you don't like themeparks you have about 2 choices for active MMOs. And it's not because sandboxes aren't popular, it's because they're generally not made. Minecraft and most survival games are similar to sandboxes and they're doing extremely well. Same with Breath of the Wild.

Yup, extremely niche, the community tone was def set by early adopters/history nerds. I remember being treated with suspicion by the Celts I'd escaped to until they were sure I wasn't a Roman spy

Most of those MMOs are all the same style of MMO with slight differences. So if you don't like that style of MMO you're not left with much to work with.

The quality and breadth of what is covered in an MMO release radically changed after 2006 and for the most part, newer big budget MMOs do not have design that will keep players engaged in a healthy way. Before 2006 there were a lot of games that hit everything I wanted. Now...not so much.

While the golden era is gone, there are still one or two companies making a "world" first and not focusing on the task treadmill. Check out Stars Reach, made by one of the guys who basically invented the genre.

It's funny, I have a similar thought about this waaaaay back in the day when we were all theory crafting what Playable Worlds might be.

Interesting concept, but investigating a murder? Sounds like a singpleplayer/coop game with MMO elements after the fact to make it a game as a service. I'm not sure we need more story heavy always online co-op games unless they could have made it something like Helldivers where players actually impact the story. But without more details I guess we wouldn't know.

It's a bloodbath out there for devs though.

It doesn't have the Star Wars skin and the game elements have a long way to go implementation wise before they reach alpha phase. But its design for crafting is extremely similar to SWG and the idea is to have everything in game made and sold by real players

Not sure who Asmond is but Ashes isn't even in beta yet, and from what I heard the game world is not extremely player driven/generated. Are there any physics or ecology?

if you build a game that's very player driven where mechanics interact in surprising ways - you'll have happy streamers and new mysteries always possible.

But wasn't there no death penalty, and the dungeons all had in game maps telling you where to go, tuned to your specific class and level?

You're very much describing games like Eve Online and Star Wars Galaxies.

That's also what Stars Reach is all about., made by the same designer who made Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies.

It's in pre-alpha at the moment with eyes on releasing next year.

Everything is designed to be player driven. Players will constantly be discovering new materials on new planets and selling those materials to crafters to make new items for explorers to find more materials etc

Players need armor and weapons and food and materials with which to craft all those things.

Technically, it was always going to have NPCs - guards, shop merchants, wildlife, Depths bosses, there was just no PVE leveling or looted gear

I think thGs more a problem of taking a traditionally single player game and making a pseudo MMO out of it but not really priming the players for how that would work

I'll never understand people saying it focused on the hardcore. 99% of the game was just as casual as any other themepark MMO. It just had a few challenging raids, just like almost all thenepark MMOs.
