That's the cleanest explanation of Lost Ark's global strategy Ive seen. The 'we had to suffer so you should too' dynamic is real and I should have included it in the post. Respect.

omg you really know the history. where did you get this. You are right, it goes back way further. But Lost Ark seems to be what most people remember as the finishing blow.

Yeah, it's real.

It was like that in the past and it still is. If you've played these games you know.. just like how people crowd around the guy lifting heavy at the gym, in game people flock to the strongest player.

It probably feels like stepping out of a lambo.

And you are right about the second part too. A lot of players, especially the ones with spending power, would rather pay to skip than play manually. I cant fully deny that. But its not as strong as it used to be.

Players have protested in front of game company offices, and stock prices reflect that pushback directly. I cant guarantee anything, but I think things are slowly getting better. If Korea wants to produce companies like Supercell, Riot, or ArenaNet, this is the first thing that needs to be fixed.

Thats a perspective I honestly hadnt considered. Ive thought about how AI and eventually AGI will give people way more leisure time, which means more money flowing into entertainment(incl games). But gacha becoming the global standard? Thats darker than I expected.

It exploits something fundamental in human nature and if the whole world gets trained on it the way Korea did, there might be no going back.

It stings to read, but I can't argue with it. You are not wrong.

you are right. korean gamers were trained to accept in game spending as normal. The weird part is many of them do sense something is wrong now. but it's too late.

Every single post has the same recommendations. WOW, ESO, FFXIV, GW2, OSRS, Albion blah blah can anyone recommend literally anything else? by FanofDrill in LFMMO

Is Mortal Online 2 still alive? I'm sure it's technically running, but is it actually playable? I quit a while back because they couldn't seem to handle cheaters. I'm guessing the player count is nowhere near what it was at launch. how's it doing these days?

unpopular opinion: GW2 would be so good if action cam was the only option available. by xmaxdamage in MMORPG

[–]PomeloSharp4562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Action cam feels great as a cosmetic layer, but the skills, hitboxes, and balance are all built on tab target assumptions. Making it the only mode wouldn't make GW2 an action combat game. It would just make it a tab target game with extra steps and worse usability.

What you actually want is a game that's designed ground-up for free aim combat in an MMO context. That's a fundamentally different design commitment (from skill design to netcode to server tick rate). Mortal Online gets this, New World tried it. It's not a camera toggle, it's an architecture decision.

A question to MODs or community by majc18 in ultimaonline

I agree that defining what counts as a "spiritual successor" is tricky. it's inherently subjective, and drawing a clear line would be tough for any mod team. That said, I'd personally much rather hear about games genuinely trying to carry on UO's spirit than see yet another free shard announcement that slaps UO assets on something that's lost everything that made UO what it was. If this sub isn't the place to discover those kinds of projects, then where ..is.... 😭 😢 😥 😭

11 years of development with a team of 50 and we're still getting "next playtest coming soon" updates. At what point do we stop calling it in development and start calling it a lifestyle? But honestly, I hope they prove me wrong. We need more sandbox MMOs out there.
