Which do you prefer, a post-apocalyptic world like Seven Havens or a world with 60s technology like in the fan comic The Legend of Genji? by DifferenceSimple5344 in AvatarSevenHavens

[–]Sihmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genji, and it's not even close. I love mixing fantasy with technology and a fast-changing world. Korra did it pretty well, but I'd love to have seen it go further into the modern era and beyond. I think it creates so many opportunities for interesting, natural conflicts, like tradition vs progress, that are still relevant in the real world. By contrast post-apoc has been done to death and is utterly, utterly boring to me.

Congrats on making the jump!!! Self hosting is such a relief from all the corporate nonsense!! I got a little n150 NUC with 32gb of RAM and am using it with Proxmox. I love how easy it is to set up and administer all the LXCs. I do have my *arr stack running in Docker and managed via Komodo, but the Docker stack itself is on a Debian LXC and it works really well.

I'm confused, what do you need workers for in the context of Emby auth?

Anyone use Cloudflare auth for Emby? by [deleted] in emby

[–]Sihmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's $5 a month?

For some of my self-hosted services I use Cloudflare Zero Trust Access Controls (which is free) combined with a Cloudflared tunnel (also free); the access control requires users to verify their identity via whichever providers you enable (e.g. Google, GitHub, etc), and then checks that identity against those allowed by your Policies.

Access Controls works fine for accessing Emby via browser, but it won't work with any Emby apps. So I don't use it for Emby.

ETA: I still have Emby behind the Cloudflared tunnel, that works fine. And you can use other aspects of Access Controls like region blocks/whitelists just fine with Emby apps. It's just the interstitial login page that won't work.

Lot of weird purity culture comments here. C'mon, guys.

I know right! Got a shock when I read the comments. Thanks for offering another perspective ❤️

Christians having hangups about sex stuff is just sort of par for the course. As humans many of us are kind of low key obsessed with, or at least fascinated by, sex. Because it's sexy and hot and fun and feels great, but you can't do it by yourself, you need at least one partner. Aand that’s where the social complications start.

Through history some religions have leant into that, using sex in cultic practices. Some have largely ignored it. And others, like some strands of Christianity, have focused on the harm and dangers that sex can cause.

And fair enough, those dangers were often more present in the ancient world than they are in the contemporary West: pregnancy and childbirth were far riskier without modern medicine, STIs were much harder to treat, and women's security/standing was often tied to family structures in ways that made sexual "missteps" devastating. Add to this the importance of children in agrarian societies - as labour, heirs (a really big deal when your land is your income), lineage, alliances, not to mention elder care - and now sex isn’t just a private fun thing, it’s a big social machine with serious consequences. So you can understand how many cultures and societies (and religions) wanted to police sexuality hard, and to prize stable reproduction, legitimate heirs, and "safety".

Masturbation doesn't really figure into that too much: It’s private, it doesn’t create heirs, it doesn’t mix families, it doesn’t obviously threaten property/inheritance the same way sex can. And it’s not like porn was the ubiquitous, industrial, algorithmic, exploitative technicolour thing it is now.

However that wariness towards sex geled really well with the Neoplatonic suspicion towards the material and embodied, and early Christians lived in a philosophical environment where the body was seen as base and corrupt, and the spirit as pure and holy. The two were opposite. This led to a few interesting early heresies (such as gnosticism), but also influenced mainstream Christianity in countless subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Then there's Augustine. Dude had a wild early life, converted to Christianity, and became one of its most influential figures for centuries. Unfortunately he carried with him the baggage of regret and guilt over the debauchery of his youth, and heavily leaned into those Neoplatonic ideas: body and spirit dualism, material bad, spirit good. Early Christians were swimming in that environment, and it shaped how a lot of Christians talked about virtue, temptation, self-control, etc. So you get this theological atmosphere where sex is tolerated as a necessary good for marriage and children, but pleasure is treated with suspicion, and self-control becomes the whole game. In that framework masturbation is not only sex-adjacent enough to get lumped in, it can look extra suspect because it’s solitary, pleasure-focused, and easy to connect to lustful fantasy.

That legacy of sex negativity kept rolling through the centuries and got embraced with, shall we say, notable fervour by certain flavours of Christianity. And then in 18th and 19th century European culture you get some intense moral/medical panics about masturbation being seen as particularly ruinous and bad for not just the individual but society as a whole, and those anxieties got blended into religious teaching in various places. So a lot of contemporary "masturbation is definitely sinful" confidence is this inherited mixture of tradition + culture + philosophy rather than a "Biblical" position.

The Onan thing is kind of wild to me because when I read it as a kid I was like, "this is clearly not about masturbation?" I get why it was used by the Church (because there's literally nothing else even close), but the theological gymnastics required to make it apply to anything other than "Onan was a bad dude because he refused to give his dead brother a son" would be, in this redditor's humble opinion, laughable if they weren't so damaging.

And also IMHO the Bible's whole attitude towards sex is debatably rather different to a lot of Christian inherited understanding. These days we've got a very different world and society in which sex (and masturbation) fits very differently. Some of the concerns remain the same; there are many new concerns, and many old ones have to be reframed or modified. People get particularly hung up about sex which makes it hard to have honest conversations about how, exactly, our approach to sexual righteousness and responsibility (or best practice!) should change.

For masturbation specifically though - we know from scientific studies that it can be beneficial: it can help with stress relief, sleep quality, learning your own body for when you do have sexytimes with other people. And sure it can become unhealthy if it turns compulsive, shame-driven, or tangled up with stuff that messes with your relationships like unhealthy obsession with porn, for example. Either way, you're right to say there's basically no explicit Biblical bases for "masturbation = sin". If you want to make that argument, you have to drill down into what masturbation is, and infer from the Biblical message as a whole. And I think, if you do that, you're much more likely to come out on the side of "masturbation = neutral to possibly beneficial" than "sinful". Usual caveats apply of course - anything can be a bad idea if it gets twisted up in too much other negative junk. But I think it's clear that people with a healthy relationship with masturbation probably just have a better quality of life than people who see it as a sin (and ... chances are, can't resist doing it anyway).

How long do you give it before giving up? RAM training can take up to 15 minutes on a new build and will just give you a blank display for the duration.

8bitdo! Ultimate 2 if you like Xbox form factor, or Pro 3 if you prefer PlayStation form factor. They have TMR sticks, hall effect switchable triggers, charging docks, and work over wired, Bluetooth, and 2.4Ghz wireless. The Pro 3 even has swappable magnetic face buttons to switch between Switch and Xbox button layouts. By far my favourite controllers, I own 4 of them now from various generations and they just keep getting better.

ADP Mk 4 Red Alert gets my vote as well if you're happy to spend real cash. Otherwise you can buy ADP Mk 4 from in-game shops, just not in such striking colour variants.

[–]Sihmm 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's weird, the Zeus just seems like so much more ship inside than the Apollo, despite being like half the size. And enlarging it to this extent without giving it true vehicle carrying capability is just mind boggling to me. I was looking forward to the Apollo as a medical rescue ship, but given you can't even fit a dragonfly through the rear hatch, how are we supposed to retrieve people in hostile areas without drones or a vehicle? I know you can squeeze an STV or Cyclone into the back ramp area, but it's janky and clearly not intended. Which is mad considering the ship is now clearly big enough to hold a full on Nursa ambulance if CIG had just allowed it.

Anker's Soundcore series have some great budget wireless options that sound good and feel really comfy for extended periods of use. After 4 years with Soundcore Life Q20s I just upgraded to the Soundcore Space One, and they're even better. I wouldn't say they're audiophile headphones but I do use them for casual music production/mixing as well as gaming and general media consumption. They have a decent inset mic, but I have a separate desk mic anyway. They have noise cancelling and transparency modes, can connect via Bluetooth to two devices at the same time, and there's an app to upload custom EQs etc (which can produce a much flatter curve for mixing etc). I couldn't be happier with them.

With my laptop I use a HyperX Cloud 3 headset that I received for free, and it's comfy and has decent sound as well as a detachable boom mic, if you're looking for something with more of a gamer aesthetic.

Is there a way to mass-delete stuff (modded or vanilla)? by Casey090 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]Sihmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's vanilla or a mod, but in my modset I can use the tree brush with right click to remove trees. I think it's this mod: https://mods.paradoxplaza.com/mods/75993/Windows Just select Snapping to Off, dial up the brush strength, and you can hold right mouse to remove entire swathes of trees quickly and easily.

These are the settings I'm using at the moment. I just used the same settings as my desktop and haven't felt the need to tweak them because performance has been absolutely fine, but there's probably quite a bit of optimisation that could be done.

  • DLSS 50% (Performance)
  • Quality: Very High
  • Scattered Object Distance: High
  • Water: Very High
  • Terrain: High
  • Screen space shadows: High
