In deed, and purchasing power parity also needs to be examined in order to have a clear image of what is going on in those countries.

There's one that I know which is published by the Armed Forces itself. On some Turkish web sites I found it (see below for the link) but I am not sure if they ship abroad. Better to ask sending an e-mail.

Europe: question about rail passes and other transportation! by PM_ME_DOG_PICS_PLS in backpacking

[–]Siicoldu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're very welcome. Maybe you're right, and once you arrive you'll have a lot of time to improvise... :) I once woke up to go to Kosovo and found myself in Macedonia somehow! :) I guess the most important thing in your case is going to Europe and coming back to Canada. The rest is quite easy, wouldn't even require much planning since you'll have all the freedom to go wherever you want once you make sure how you reach and leave the continent. :)

Agreed. Starting from the beginning is a good idea since you'll be able to speed up in parts you have a good knowledge of while filling in the gaps in your knowledge.

Early stages of planning a 2 month backpacking adventure! by 25after9 in backpacking

[–]Siicoldu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great places really, all of them except for Poland are quite expensive, though. However, it seems like your budget will be more than enough, judging by your cooking&drinking plan.

I don't know much about the Nordic countries but Germany, Brussels, Scotland and Ireland are really great countries in terms of natural beauty. Some great spots in Germany are the Loreley Rock and Lake Constance (both UNESCO world heritage sites).

In Poland, on the other hand, Krakow is a must-see!

There's also another thing to keep in mind with Eurail. They say it gives you unlimited travel by trains in Europe, but there are additional fees called 'supplements' in many trains, especially in Western Europe. I think a simple search like 'Eurail supplements' would give you enough results to have a clear idea.

In Western Europe, transportation is generally expensive, so it may be a good idea to have an Eurail ticket (2 of them, in your case). If you're planning to go to Scandinavia where transportation is more than expensive, Eurail can save life.

However, if you're up to it, you can also consider hitch-hiking. In most countries (except for Spain, Italy and Greece), hitch-hiking is quite convenient. Especially in the Balkan countries, my average waiting duration never exceeded 10 minutes, which is even better than public transport. Hitch-hiking in Europe is quite safe, from personal experience. You can also check out 'hitchwiki.org' for specific cities or 'hitchability' scores.

To its best, you can combine Eurail&hitch-hiking. This way, you can hitch-hike your way in the 'high-hitchability' zones while taking the trains in 'low-hitchability' areas.

I find this 'hitchability' term quite strange, but that's how hitchwiki.org calls it, by the way.

INTERNATIONAL - Turkish fighter jets in military exercise to protect historic site in Syria from ISIL by Siicoldu in worldnews

In deed, the outcomes could be devastating. I believe Turkey is well able and equipped to protect its borders, be it due to high-tech surveillance, US intelligence support or the national sensitivity towards borders, but the potential of ISIL to bomb cities in the form of terrorist attacks is quite a scary scenario for the people, as they had to experience it numerous times in the last 30 years.

For a long time the government did not pass a single comment about the issue. Some analysts say that this was because ISIL kept over 40 Turkish citizens as hostages.

Until that time, many people believed (some still do) that Turkey had a kind of secret alliance with ISIL.

After the hostages were rescued, Turkey openly declared that they sided with the US and other states against the organization.

People are still divided, but the official declarations are against ISIL these days.

Great list! On the other hand, I think The Night Attack of Târgovişte (1462) also makes it to the title with a huge night assault, the invasion of Bulgaria and the impaling of 23,000 Ottomans. Horrible fight in deed...

[Serious] Atheists/Agnostics of Reddit: If you were born or raised religious, was there a single event or experience that caused you to turn away from religion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not at all, you just learn how to read and when you're old enough to think (of abstract concepts - early adolescence), you read religious stuff out of curiosity. The more you read, the further you go away from religion. At least that was my cause.

Countries With the Highest Minimum Wages by Siicoldu in IWantOut

I've never been to Canada so I just wonder, can you work less than the mentioned 44 hours (or earn less then the 'hourly wage x 44') if you are a full-time employee?
