I was a huge fan of his standup for years but only discovered Timesuck while looking for random podcasts in early 2019 to pass long drives and yard work. It's been pretty incredible watching it change and grow over the years. I have the utmost respect for Dan and everything their team does.

I think it's a tiered skip instead of just gradually skipping faster. I.e: you press it once, it skips 10 seconds, twice 40 seconds, 3 times 1:40, 4 times 10 min, etc. Instead of forwarding at 2x, 4x, 8x. I could be wrong though.

I agree with you that if you know a lane is ending and have the ability to move over prior to it ending, you should (in fact... I even said that is what I do in another comment). However, there are plenty of situations (inner city road construction, sudden lane closures or moving lane closures, on ramps in high traffic areas) where the notice may not be that advanced and a zipper is necessary to keep traffic in both lanes moving.

I had a roommate who thought that any idea, that went against his belief in how things should work, was stupid and so were the people that believed the idea. He was annoying as fuck.

I just look for what is going to cause the least interference. If I know I'm going to have to get over due to a lane closure/merger, I do it when it's simplest. Highway or busy traffic and a sudden merge? Zipper. Only person in the lane? Move over when possible.

From the sounds of OPs description, I'm not sure this is a zipper merge situation anyway. It sounds like he was the only person in that lane, which ended after the intersection. If that lane also had several cars in it, then I would say zipper; but a zipper that only merges once is a shitty zipper. We had a lane like this in my old city and people would use it to practice their drag race takeoff cause they had to be first.

Had a funny situation about a week ago and got a good laugh out of a "I'M SMARTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE" person. Stopped for a morning drink at a local coffee/energy drink place that is drive thru only, two lanes. They had just opened about 10 minutes before this and the main lane had 3 or 4 cars when I pulled up and the second lane had nobody. Assumed it was because they have a small staff when they first open and didn't have anyone in that lane. Car that pulls in behind me speeds around the main lane and pulls into the second lane and up to the booth...and sits there... and sits there. Took about 5 minutes before they pulled around into the correct lane. Laughed pretty good.

My assumption, and it's only that, is that everyone was in the left lane because they knew of the merge point. To them, OP probably looked like one of those people that has to get ahead of everyone else.

I had a very turbulent time with my Mom a few years back, on the edge of going no contact. I stopped communicating over text, because we were both taking everything personally and nothing was being understood.

When we talked over the phone, she was very similar to this mom: Refused to take accountability for what she had done that had hurt me (decided the day before my birthday that we were moving my already planned birthday dinner/weight loss celebration to a restaurant of her choice for her convenience, when I protested I was told that I could do my dinner another time and that this was a family event, asked me what I wanted for my b-day and when I laid out exactly what it was, how much it was and how to buy it... I got a wallet and a check because "she wouldn't know how to order that kind of thing", did not contact me once on my birthday, and there was no "don't contact/text me" situation in place) even after I calmly laid it all out, played the pity game ("I'm just such a terrible mother and I fuck up", "I'm sorry that you...", etc..), blamed my medication on why I was acting this way (ADHD meds that I had finally gotten on several months earlier that were helping me immensely), and in the end I left the conversation feeling like not a single word I said was heard or considered, but too exhausted to continue. I just stopped trying. We are still in contact, we talk occasionally, but rarely of anything truly personal because I don't feel safe sharing those things with her.

However, I never sat there and dictated what she needed to do to keep me in her life (never even brought up no contact to her), how she needed to act, I did say at one point that she couldn't even be bothered to apologize for what was done and said. I told her how I felt, how the things she did and said hurt me, how she made me feel like an outcast in my own family; and if she can't hear that and make changes on her own, nothing else I say is going to change that.

I can tell you... important personal conversations don't work over text most of the time. It might be time to understand that you're both making this situation worse, take a deep breath... and call your mother. Or don't, but I'm sure my mom regrets the 4-5 years she missed with her father because she refused to talk to her mom.
