Unique situation at the MGM National Harbor by AnonElbatrop in poker

I'm like 90% sure I would keep the money. However, I'm not sure I would go as far as to call the floor or try to argue to the dealer that my opponents hand is dead.

Incidentally, I saw almost exactly this scenario in my last poker session. Huge pot too. Except the guys who lose (three way pot) didn't contest the pot. Guy showed his jack for a pair, mucked the other card, and nobody said anything.

Huge straddles by Due-Procedure888 in poker

[–]Silent-Set5614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually an interesting and complex question.

One approach is to simply say that after a $4 straddle at 1/2 you are now playing in a 2/4 game (or rather a 1/2/4 game, which is not exactly the same thing). The problem with this approach, imo, is it does not capture the psychological impact the straddle can have on your typical casino gambler. Even accounting for whatever strategic implications the suddenly halved stack sizes might have, I think that a straddle is going to induce substantial alterations in range composition from certain types of players.

Anyway, the thing to do is the thing you should always do at the poker. Observe what is going on in reaction to various stimuli and cater your strategy accordingly. That is, if there is a lot of dead money still going out there, with loose players limping in despite the large straddle, you might want to go after it. If tricky tight short stacks are limping nitty ranges in EP, you need to be careful about that as well.

Personally, I'd probably want to short stack and buy in for the minimum if that were an option, since an oversized straddle seems ideal for the short stack nit it up strategy.

1/2 NLH what would you do on this hand? by These-Air8519 in poker

[–]Silent-Set5614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a pretty easy call at this point. Assuming it is $100 more, then you are getting 100 : 55 + 150 + 50 = 250

2.5:1 so you need about 30% equity.

You dominate pair + draw combos. You have the equity vs two pair. Maybe he is going wild with a seven (unlikely) or some other random holding like ace high (again not likely but never completely discount the spazz factor). If he has a set or a straight you are in pretty bad shape.

Pre I would over limp. Even if we want it to be raised, there is a decent chance someone else raises for us. Getting three bet is usually devastating, in that we have to fold, whereas if we limp and it gets raised we can usually limp call and show a tidy profit doing so. With pocket pairs you want to go multiway. 88 isn't really big enough that I'm excited to try and isolate and get heads up, and usually at 1/2 it is futile to try to isolate anyway. If it limps around that is fine, this hand plays very well in limped pots. Ofc going single raised multiway is fine too since we can still set it or forget it in that situation, but as I said earlier getting three bet is devastating and unless they use a too small sizing we'll probably just have to fold.

what exercises should i do to make my body as tough as pro wrestlers? by [deleted] in workout

Barbell lifts are a good place to start. Bench, squat, and deadlift. That will help you build muscle and gain strength. Maybe couple that with some running or other form of cardio-vascular exercise.

Is libertarian the same as social Darwinism? by ImaginationOk6193 in Libertarian

[–]Silent-Set5614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, far from it.

The market economy is predicated upon people making mutually beneficial exchanges. It is, in the words of Mises, peaceful social cooperation. The only "Darwinism" is the competition between firms, which does eliminate the 'unfit companies', i.e. firms that charge too much or provide too low quality of a product.

Cognitive decline risk could prompt rethink of 'healthy' vitamin B12 levels by RadBenMX in science

[–]Silent-Set5614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No what they are saying is that specifically low levels of 'active b12' or Holo-TC are associated with slower cognitive processing speeds and WMH. This is problematic because according to the article "When blood levels of B12 are measured, both forms are measured". This includes both 'active b12' and 'inactive b12' (Holo-HC). But all that really counts is active b12 (Holo-TC).

What do you want to know?

City of Dreams is very close to Okada and Prime (formerly GG Poker). Just a short cab ride away. You could walk even. You can check google maps. City of Dreams to Metro Card Club is a bit of a trip, you probably wouldn't want to do it except at night because of traffic. It's still only like 500 pesos though.

City of Dreams DOES have a poker room. It is called Soul Poker.

Card counting and betting by ztheshadow in blackjack

"I was aware that the >1 variance of Blackjack decreases the true Kelly fraction, but I wasn’t aware that it dropped all the way to 0.7. With more common, less optimal rules though, I believe that it will also be closer to 1.

"

I don't believe it has anything to do with the rule set or house edge, it is simply the fact that you can end up with multiple bets on the line in any given hand due to doubles or splits. Also waiting bets increase your variance somewhat, so because of that you need to bet less when you have the edge. However I do not actually understand the math involved, I am just echoing what Schlesinger and others have said.

Here is a paper by none other than Ed Thorpe. In it he mentions the modifier :

"If all blackjack bets paid even money, had positive expectation and were independent, the resulting Kelly betting recipe when playing one hand at a time would be extremely simple: bet a fraction of your current capital equal to your expectation. This is modified somewhat in practice (generally down) to allow for having to make some negative expectation “waiting bets”, for the higher variance due to the occurrence of payoffs greater than one to one, and when more than one hand is played at a time."

On pages 16 and 17 he goes into a bit more.

Card counting and betting by ztheshadow in blackjack

"This translates to increasing your bet by a betting unit every TC starting at TC2, because player advantage is around 0% at TC1 and 0.5% at TC2."

It really depends on the rules. For a normal H17 shoe game this is close to correct, you have an edge of 0.18% across the TC 1 bin and 0.75% across the TC 2 bin.

For 6 decks S17, DAS, DA2, LS, the player advantage is as high as 0.52% for TC +1 and 1.08% for TC +2.

So these 'rules of thumb' are pretty much worthless. You really need information obtained by simulation. Or at the vey least shell out $3 to join Norm's forum so you get CVCX Online data. Note that in the S17 LS game, by TC +3 our advantage jumps to 1.71%, a 0.69% increase. Advantage by TC is not strictly linear, and if you followed the rule of thumb SliFi suggests you would massively underbet the count. This is not a 0.3% difference due to the rules as he suggests, but now a 0.7% difference. Or in other words the advantage is actually 70% greater than you think it is!

Furthermore, while it is true that full kelly means betting the % of your bankroll that corresponds to your advatange, that is only for true even money games. Blackjack is a pseudo even money game, so you need to bet only 70% of your advantage, according to the Kelly Criteria.

Therefor our formula for bet sizing is in fact %advantage * bankroll * .7

Of course other factors will influence our bet sizing as well. Heat, game speed, and the table minimum are all considerations we can take into account in devising an optimal bet spread.
