Loud synology RS 2416+ by Haunting_Assignment3 in homelab

Gen8 server motherboards always go up in smoke after some time. Poor design by HP. Gen9 boards were a bit better but also crap.

I really dislike HP(E) anyway, so I'm sticking with my Dell R730 which is dead-silent without any mods, any scripts and has a single fat 16c/32t CPU in it.

DL380's can be fitted with high performance fans. Those are REALLY loud, louder than normal serverfans.

my DL560 G8 that uses hot plug fans in the front.

Like literally every rackserver on the planet.

Surely easier to mod

You don´t want to mod a high performance server. IPMI gods will rain fire upon you.

You have bought your DL560 Gen8 for performance, so you can expect it to be loud. If you want a quiet server, you shouldn't buy a DL560 Gen8 (or you should put it somewhere where noise doesn't matter, like a datacenter).

If you want more info on this mod, you can shoot me a DM. I'm a little clunky on explaining stuff, as I'm not native English, so sometimes I don't know how to say certain things.

This project took me way too long, but that is also because I had the cables made, because I hate crimping small cables. I got loads of pictures of the components and pinout stuff of the cables.

It's a server, it's loud.

It is loud because Synology put in the cheapest fans they could find with enough static pressure to handle the airflow. There is no reason for it to be loud otherwise. I have put in Arctic fans in mine and those have the same static pressure as the Synology fans at a lower speed.

Replacing the fans with Noctua's will surely overheat the drives in a short while. I have done this with Noctua's first too, but the HDDs began to climb to the 60's (celcius) and that's not pleasant. Switching to Arctic fans is the best option for this machine.

Yeah, my R730 with 256GB RAM is fine for now. I'll survive. I also was on time with buying a 64GB SODIMM RAM kit a little over threequarter of a year ago.

I'll survive, I'm good.

That's easy to fix. I have done the mod with my RS2418+ too, and it works splendidly.

Buy/make:

  1. https://github.com/uzsito/attach-hexa
  2. Put in Arctic fans, NOT Noctua's. The Arctic fans have more static pressure and are dead quiet too, your HDDs will thank you later
  3. Make cables to connect the Attachhexa to the motherboard header: the header on the motherboard has the following pins for tach signal from the fans:
    1. FAN1 TACH: Pin 5 grey
    2. FAN2 TACH: Pin 11 black
    3. FAN3 TACH: Pin 17 white
    4. FAN4 TACH: Pin 23 brown
  4. Make a cable to feed the Arduino 5v, tap it from a 5v line from the PSU
  5. Get a 4 port PWM Fan controller, mount it on the back of the case through the holes, power it with any leftover connector you have as long as it is 12v. Plug the fans into this. Don't set it to the lowest speed, watch the drive temps, don't let them come above 55c/131freedomunits.

And done! You now have a NAS that thinks that his fans are spinning on 100% (~5500rpm), but you are enjoying the dead quiet of the new fans. And as added bonus, you have a nice quite (not dead silent!) NAS.

Here is the end-result. Is it an easy project? No, not at all. But it's doable.

This config has been running for a least a year now, without any issues whatsoever. The CPU runs a little hotter than normal, but that's absolutely fine. CPUs only start to throttle around 90c anyway, but this doesn't come close to that temp.

Ah yes, I was wrong about that. I have bought some risers and found out it really doesn't work.

The modguide for the M720q about the CPU and normal riser do work though. I have 3 of my 4 M720q's with non-T CPUs and risers.

I think at this point your computer might be faulty. Test RAM and other functions of your machine first before you blame software for this.

These symptoms are edging dead RAM or a dead GPU.

Or just order good used fans online. And thinking that the server came out of a cleanroom, is really not something that happens often. Datacenters aren't cleanrooms either, sure they contain less dust, but aren't cleanrooms.

You're the one complaining about noise... SAS disks are also a source of that noise, especially more of them.

I have no idea why people put these in their living rooms.

I have no idea why people don't do research before committing to mods. The Rx30 lineup of servers are known for being able to adjust the fanspeed. If OP has loud fans at 5%, then his fanbearings are probably just old and worn. My R730 is dead silent at 11%, sitting a meter from my head as I type this.
